In the days of the Spanish Inquisition, when an inquisitor wanted to break a man’s spirit, they would put him in a dungeon that was so small he could neither fully stand up nor lie down. In fact, he simply could not extend himself in any direction. They would leave him in this condition until he did one of two things; he either gave in or went mad.
This is what life is all about. We were made for extension, for improvement, for being a little closer to God and godliness today than yesterday. When we do not extend ourselves, we go a little mad.
Thoreau used to say that he always returned a borrowed axe sharper than when he received it. When your last pulse beat has ended, when your last breath has been taken, when your soul goes up as your body lies down, will you have taken the life given you and made it sharper than when you received it?
