SOUL STRENGTH

He was neither a preacher nor a theologian with countless degrees, but his was a soul that knew God on a first name basis.

It is why when all four of Horatio Spafford’s daughters perished at sea, he still was able to write a hymn so many of us have sung, and more than once.

“When peace, like a river, attendeth my way,
When sorrows, like sea-billows, roll;
Whatever my lot, Thou hast taught me to say,
It is well, it is well, with my soul.”

It is what happens in the life of those who stretch their souls…therefore…a challenge…
In this world of storm, be a rainbow.
Stretch your soul so you can forgive and not otherwise be petty and full of pout.
Build towers of kindness where angels will want to gather and sing.
Raise up the sails of your soul and let them gather in the winds of God.

Be an Eagle and fly so high you can almost hear the pearly gates swinging open for yet another soul that also stretched and stretched and stretched some more.

Be soul-strong so that when the spirit of Auschwitz, or slavery, or racism, or any of like kin or kind seeks to live, you will destroy such thoughts. You will speak out, and when you have finished speaking,
People will know that you have stretched your soul.

SHE SAID IT TO HERSELF

Most people do not really have goals. The cost is too great and most people simply spend their lives looking for the easy way out.

Then there was Ffyona Campbell, a British long distance walker, who over a period of 11 years walked 20,000 miles and earned for charity 11,000 pounds.

She walked across America and Australia. She walked through Europe.

She walked across Africa from Cape Town to Tangier. She walking through jungles, deserts and a 400 mile wide mine field, she earned her label as “the greatest walker of them all.”

When asked why she did it she replied, “Because I said I would.”

“Who did you say it to?” she was asked.

“I said it to myself.”

What do you say to yourself when you arise each morning…before you set out to fill in the rest of the day before you?

I’m not saying that the goal of Ffyona Campbell is one that many people would want to set for themselves…but that is not the point.

The point is that she said to herself “I’m going to do it…and she did it.” It was difficult and she still did it. There were times when she could have given up on the idea…but she didn’t.

In that early morning conversation with yourself I was just talking about, tell yourself that you want to be soul-deep in your thinking….deep and dedicated to something else besides being a sloth hanging upside down from a tree.

Tell yourself you will set a personal record for walking through the jungles and deserts of life and never giving up. That if life is a marathon then you will fill its highways and byways with purpose.

And when you ask yourself why you are doing it, answer yourself, “Because I said I would.”

Say it, and do it, and say it, and do it, and keep on saying and doing it for the rest of your life.

STRETCH YOUR SOUL

A man in a bar walked over to a friend who was sitting in a corner all by himself drinking. As he drew closer he saw that his friend looked terrible. “What’s the problem?” he asked.

My mother died in June,” he said, “and left me $10,000.”

“That’s tough,” replied the friend, “No wonder you look so bad…your lost your mother, man.”

“Then in July,” the morose man continued, “My father died, leaving me $50,000.”

“Wow! Two parents gone in two months. No wonder you’re depressed.”
“And last month my aunt died, and left me $15,000.”

“Three close family members lost in three months? Things haven’t been good have they?”

“Then this past month,” continued, the friend, “nothing! Not a single dime.”

Let me tell you another story.

You may remember reading several years back about Oseola McCarty. She had lived in a small wooden frame house in Hattiesburg, Mississippi and worked her whole life as washer woman.

Then, in July 1995, she announced she was leaving $150,000 of her life’s savings to the University of Southern Mississippi. “I just want some others to have the chance for an education I never had,” was her explanation. She had dreamed of becoming a nurse but had to drop out of elementary school to help take care of sick relatives.

One story is of selfishness. The other story is of selflessness.

One individual was living with a shrunken soul. The other with a soul that stretched miles further than most.

I have swum the Central Florida waters, where Jason Tuskes died, many times but without the same tragic results.

One Tuesday morning, this 17 year old went scuba diving in some cool spring waters not far from his home. “He’s part fish” some of his friends would often say for he was more than at home in the water.

This time all did not go well. Deep below the water he found himself wedged into a narrow passageway.

When he realized his situation was hopeless he took off his metal air tank and reaching for his diver’s knife began to etch a message on the metal surface, “I love you mom, dad and Christine.” In a short time he drowned.

It was a cross rather than a cave where he died but from that cross he etched across the table of human history that great message of love that was Golgotha’s echo,” Father, forgive them for they know not what they do.”

It was 1975 and a little child was born. The name Raymond Dunn, Jr. was duly recorded on his birth certificate.

Most births are routine. His wasn’t. The Associated Press reports that at his birth he suffered a skull fracture and oxygen deprivation that caused severe retardation.

With the passing of time things only grew worse. Up to twenty seizures per day twisted his body causing severe and relentless pain. He was mute, blind and immobile.

He had allergies so severe that his body could handle only one food; a meat-based formula made by Gerber Foods.

But in 1985, Gerber stopped making the formula. His mother scoured the country to buy up all the cans any stores had in stock.

In 1990 the cupboard was bare. Raymond could not long survive.

She took her problem to Gerber and the employees of the company listened. Soon hundreds of volunteers willingly gave hundreds of hours to resurrect old equipment, set up production lines and obtain special approval from the USDA to produce the formula.

Five years later, in 1995 Raymond Dunn, Jr. known as the Gerber boy, died from his physical problems.

But during his brief lifetime he called forth an overflow of compassion from a collection of folk who saw their destiny of little things…and did it.

There is a story often told about Martin Luther, the Father of our Protestant faith, of how he had been moping about for more days and nights than were good for him, and those around him.

Finally, his wife appeared one morning dressed totally in black. “Katherine,” he asked, “Why are you dressed as if in mourning?”

“Someone has died,” she replied.

“Why have I not heard? Who was it?” asked Luther

“It seems,” his wife responded, “that God must have died.”

Luther got the point.

No, God is not dead, but we must be alive to that fact. Stretch our souls in the workout room of the spirit. Because a soul flabby from lack of use cannot bear the burdens that inevitably come to all of us.

The late Harry Emerson Fosdick was one of America’s premier preachers. He primed the thinking of thousands with thoughts such as the following, “Life is not so much like a structure as like a river…it continuously flows, and to be a person is to be engaged in a perpetual process of becoming.”

And I got to thinking…that is where so many problems begin with so many people…they become stagnant pools with no inlet or outlet…no flowing…no movement.

His walk was the walk of a man who was weary of life and could see no future. He was a failure in the past, present and future. If you asked him if he believed in God he would began to tell a story.

He would tell you of one day when while walking he stubbed his toe on a watch. It was a rather large watch and it skidded away from him and crashed again an old stone wall.

He picked it up and began to examine it.

It consisted of a complicated arrangement of wheels, springs, jewels and balances; neatly combined in a case and covered with crystal.

On closer examination he discovered that every tiny piece of its intricate mechanism performed according to a definite schedule, and that each part was so related to every other part that the hands moved about the dial according to a dependable and unvarying routine.

And if you were still listening to his story he would go on to tell you that while he had never seen a watch being made he had reached a conclusion as to how it had come to be.

That out of the bowels of the earth had come iron and gold and the elements of glass and that they had refined themselves and fashioned themselves into springs and wheels and crystals and one day all by themselves had started to “tick.” And that the “tick” had been followed by a “tock.”

And he would say this with sadness because he knew what you were thinking and how you were thinking of how he had a reputation for not believing in God…and how he believed that there was creation but no Creator.

And he could see sadness in your eyes and he understood for he knew sadness well…he could not, would not believe in God.

“I believe in myself and that is all,” and he would say this and had said this many times.

When she was three when she did not get her way, she threw a fit and if that didn’t work she pouted.

When she was thirteen she had learned that negative behavior at home was rewarded so she continued with it. She was starting to have some trouble with friends who were no longer friends…but she blamed them for the breakdown and continued the behavior.

By the time she was 33 her life was one long list of broken relationships and on going arguments and she wasn’t being rewarded for this behavior…but she could not, would not stop.

When he was six years old he was good with his little fist and so when someone dared to disagree with him he punched them.

When he was sixteen he was punching with words as well as fists and more and more people walked the other way when he approached…and he blamed them for a life that was not satisfying at all.

When he was 33 he referred to most people as “loose canons” because they disagreed with him. He could not abide people who disagreed with him and so his list of friends grew less and less until the list was almost nil.

And one day he read, “What you sow you reap” but felt it didn’t apply to him.

And then there was Salvatore Cascaville.

He worked in the city of New York for over a quarter of a century.

He drove a green and yellow bus.

Once one of his passengers wrote a check made out to “The Nicest Driver in New York.”

Some days he didn’t feel as good as he did the day before. Life’s like that.

But he greeted each and every passenger with a smile on his face and a cheery tone to his voice. Some passengers were not always polite or easy to get along with but he treated everyone the same; with respect and patience and an innate kindness.

He had a reputation for going out of his way to be nice. He even waited for a passenger rushing to catch his bus.

His passengers never heard him screaming at taxi cab drivers.

One passenger said that riding with Salvatore was “15 minutes of tonic.” When other passengers heard him say it they applauded.

Sal didn’t carry his feeling on his sleeve or a chip on his shoulder. He was a great man where greatness counts.
Sal was a humble man. He didn’t have a love affair with himself walking down the pathway of life holding his own hand.

He had heard and believed and practiced those words of Christ “For whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and whoever humbles himself will be exalted. “ (Matthew 23:12)

And yes…the question all of us must ask ourselves and honestly answer…
Are we our own worst enemy?

A PLACE CALLED FOREVER

One day when i was a little boy, I watched a coal black beetle crawl over a nearby rock.

In the heat of the day it soon began to dry up and die.

Then a strange and wonderful thing started to happen. As i gazed with awe, it split all the way down its back. And out came an ugly mass that quickly began to change into something bright and bbeautiful.

Slowly a living rainbow unfolded before my eyes.

A miracle.

The transformation of a hideous bettle into an exquisite dragonfy. Then, with its brillaint wings spread wide, it began to flit al about. All the while, the body it had left behind, lay withering in the sun.

I did not think it then, I was too young to make such a comarison, but that is what death is. The burying of a body but not the buryng of a life.

The burying of a remnant, but not the burying of a soul.

Life is a trip on the way to a destination, really. Mortality on the way to immortality. Earthly doors opening and closing and opening and closing until one day a heavenly gate opens and we enter into a place called forever.

Booker T Washington lived in a time when there was little or no effort to understand or treat a black man with respect. Genius that he was; inventor par excellence he nevertheless was treated poorly on a daily basis and oft times worse than that.

However, he would not give back the same. He said and more than once, “I will not let any man degrade my soul by making me hate him.”

A man named Stanton called Lincoln the greatest clown he had ever known. However, when it came time to form a cabinet Lincoln chose Stanton for the job.

Lincoln went on to cultivate their relationship and finally had a completely devoted friend.

Therefore, on that dark cold rainy night when Lincoln lay dying with a bullet in his head, tears poured down Stanton’s face as he said, “There lies the greatest man this nation has ever known.”
Love as Christ preached it is not an impossibility. There are those who achieve it. Who go the extra mile. Who stretch their souls.

“There are four questions of value in life... What is sacred? Of what is the spirit made? What is worth living for, and what is worth dying for? The answer to each is the same. Only love.”

Henry Ward Beecher was a great preacher but for those who knew him he is best remembered for how he practiced what he preached.

It was a common enough phrase when people described him, “If you want a favor from Beecher, kick him.”

For yes, when anyone insulted him or went out of their way to give him grief he was not happy until he had gone out of his way to do a good turn for the offender.

He did not just preach God or say Amen after a prayer to God; rather he completely gave himself to God.

He could have been as are many men and women are an enemy to him self. He chose instead to be a friend to himself by being a friend to his enemies.

You have heard that it was said, 'You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.' But I say to you, love your enemies, bless those who hurt you, and pray for those who spitefully use you and persecute you."

A MISTAKE IN THE MAKING

A great King for whom the Master Builder had built many fine buildings put forth his request, "I want you to build the most beautiful mansion that has ever been built. And when I come back from this trip I must take I want it finished.'

The Master Builder readily agreed but then began to have thoughts that bothered him but not enough to put them aside.

"I have built so many buildings and while my profits have not been small I believe it is time I profit myself more greatly. And it will be easy enough. All I have to do is skimp on supplies and use shoddy materials where it doesn't show."

And so this is what he did.

From the outside the mansion looked magnificent. But in those places where no one could see it was yet another matter. The insulation was of short lived material. Every hidden corner was a masterpiece of deceit.

When the King returned he took one look at the mansion and exclaimed "Master Builder, you have outdone yourself. It is a building worthy of you and therefore I am pleased to tell you that it is yours and always has been. It is my gift to you and you have no need to thank me. You deserve it."

And the Master Builder's mind was in complete disarray. He had known that in time things would have begun to go wrong and he had prepared a long list of excuses. How the carpenters had cheated him. How it was the suppliers fault.

But not it was another matter...he had to live with his excuses.
 
Life's like that. We are constantly building our lives and if we build them of shoddy thoughts and shoddy deeds and then try to blame everyone and anybody but ourselves...the fact is we are the ones who have to live with our excuses.

Friends Are Better Than Enemies


Do you call yourself a private person while others call you a snob? 

Are you able to offer a smile to someone who doesn't smile back?  Are you able to take a suggestion to improve without considering it a personal affront?  When recently someone met you with anger was it because they didn't like you or could it have been because they were in the middle of a personal crisis that they could  hardly shout up and down the office? 

If you meet their anger with patient compassion will you probably be the only one

who does?  Do you help a new person at the office to understand what is going on or do

you regard them as an annoyance you wish would go away?  If you are a boss and an

employee makes a mistake do you give them cold disdain or do you sit down with them

and analyze what went wrong?

       Are you a friend in a sometimes too unfriendly world?

When she was three when she did not get her way, she threw a fit and if that didn’t work she pouted.

When she was thirteen she had learned that negative behavior at home was rewarded so she continued with it. She was starting to have some trouble with friends who were no longer friends…but she blamed them for the breakdown and continued the behavior.
 
By the time she was 33 her life was one long list of broken relationships and on going arguments and she wasn’t being rewarded for this behavior…but she could not, would not stop.

When he was six years old he was good with his little fist and so when someone dared to disagree with him he punched them.

When he was sixteen he was punching with words as well as fists and more and more people walked the other way when he approached…and he blamed them for a life that was not satisfying at all.

When he was 33 he referred to most people as “loose canons” because they disagreed with him. He could not abide people who disagreed with him and so his list of friends grew less and less until the list was almost nil.

And one day he read, “What you sow you reap” but felt it didn’t apply to him.

And then there was Salvatore Cascaville.

He worked in the city of New York for over a quarter of a century.

He drove a green and yellow bus.

Once one of his passengers wrote a check made out to “The Nicest Driver in New York.”

Some days he didn’t feel as good as he did the day before. Life’s like that.

But he greeted each and every passenger with a smile on his face and a cheery tone to his voice. Some passengers were not always polite or easy to get along with but he treated everyone the same; with respect and patience and an innate kindness.

He had a reputation for going out of his way to be nice. He even waited for a passenger rushing to catch his bus.

His passengers never heard him screaming at taxi cab drivers.
One passenger said that riding with Salvatore was “15 minutes of tonic.” When other passengers heard him say it they applauded.

Sal didn’t carry his feeling on his sleeve or a chip on his shoulder. He was a great man where greatness counts.

Sal was a humble man. He didn’t have a love affair with himself walking down the pathway of life holding his own hand.

He had heard and believed and practiced those words of Christ “For whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and whoever humbles himself will be exalted. “ (Matthew 23:12)

And yes…the question all of us must ask ourselves and honestly answer…
Are we our own worst enemy?

There was a little girl and she had always been told that she came from God.

When she was 4 years old God sent her a baby brother and she became inordinately interested.

It was obvious that she loved the baby and so her parents wondered when she asked if she could be left alone with him.

They worried that like most 4 years olds she might not be aware of how fragile a baby can be if a 4 four year old with mistaken love begins to shake him or because of jealousy does even worse. So they declined.

But the little girl would not desist. Finally, since it was obvious by how she treated her little brother that she loved him a great deal they relented and granted her wish.

With a smile large enough to take over her face the little girl went into the room and closed the door…but it opened a crack…enough for her parents to look through the tiny opening and observe.
 
They watched her carefully approach her brother, bend down with her face close to his and murmur, “Baby brother, tell me what God feels like. I’m starting to forget.”

"Do you hear what these children are saying?" they asked him. "Yes," replied Jesus, "have you never read, "'From the lips of children and infants you have ordained praise'?" Matthew 21:16

He was poor little man whose ragged clothing hung from him as if they were perilously close to coming apart and falling to the ground.

The shoes on his feet were but remnants of their former selves.

The house in which he lived was dilapidated, downtrodden and miserable to behold. It was an old rooming house and the one room where he lived was all that he could afford.

Yet, not far from where he worked for the most meager of pay was an antique shop that specialized in beautiful works of art; glass into which were chiseled the most beautiful of images, paintings like few he had ever seen before.

And ere now and then, after saving for months…he would go into this old antique shop and pick out one of the items on its shelves and take it back to his room.

Once, someone making fun of him said, “You are a fool little man. You call home that miserable little room in what would otherwise be the attic. And yet you buy articles fit for a mansion.”

“O no,” came back the reply, “I am not a fool at all because you see that is where I live.”

Where we live, wherever that is, we need to surround ourselves with beautiful thoughts and beautiful deeds and beautiful memories of who we have been. For by such choices we can make a beautiful life even if much around us may or may not always be.

And yes…a beautiful faith that glows with the realization that we are not alone…or forgotten…that we are eternal in the eyes of heaven and that God’s helping hand is only a prayer away.

”A man’s heart plans his way, but the Lord directs his steps.” (Proverbs 16:9)

“Time is …
To slow for those who Wait,
’Too swift for those who Fear,
Too long for those who Grieve,
Too short for those who Rejoice;
But for those who Love,
Time is eternity.

Lost: Somewhere between sunrise and sunset, two golden hours, each set with sixty diamond minutes. No reward is offered, for they are gone forever.
How we use this precious commodity called time is of such value to ourselves and those around us.

We cannot like a director cry out, “Cut…let’s take that scene again.”

We have no reverse gear as in our cars.

It was Rubiat Omar Kyiam who said…
“The moving hand writes and having write moves on, nor all your piety or wit shall lure it back to cancel half a line. Nor all your tears wash out a word of it.”

In short when you carved your name on that tree those many years ago or used a sharpened stick to write your name in wet concrete you were saying “I cannot change what happens in time but remember that I was here.”

And here you are and what are you doing with this precious gift?

Are you being simply kind? Not to such an overwhelming degree some one of your acts makes the morning newspaper but kind enough to make your family smile rather than weep.

Are you being generous? In a world where selfishness too often reigns are you a bright star in a darkened night?

TOMORROW IS REALLY COMING

To treat tomorrow as if it is never really coming is a prime example of wisdom in decline.

A man who looked at his tires growing slicker and slicker with the passing of each day. With less tread becoming an increasing problem he knew he should be doing something. He however he did nothing and he did it increasingly well.

Finally tomorrow really came and he found himself in the hospital. His arm was in a cast, his head swathed in bandages, both legs held high and he trying to figure how much a new car would cost.

'Tomorrow' is the excuse of the lazy and refuge of the incompetent," wrote one modern day philosopher.

“When I find it convenient, I will send for you.”
And a Governor by the name of Felix had brought the Apostle Paul before him to be judged for his Christian faith. And in the reading of the story it seems that Paul was well on to persuading Felix to consider Christianity.

But Felix killed the opportunity by pushing it forward until a tomorrow that never came.

“A double minded man is unstable in all his ways” James 1:8 In short, procrastination comes out of double mindedness. We can’t make up our mind what to do because we have divided desires. We want to do what is right but we can’t and won’t focus on the center of a bulls eye.

Talk over your problem with someone. Tell them what you plan to do…now you have made a public announcement of what you want and know you should be doing.

Announce your plan to God and more than once. He doesn’t need to hear it more than once but you need to say it more than once.

On time an old preacher was telling a story of the first time he came forward as a young lad to accept Christ.

As he walked up the aisle one man cried out ”Hold on.”

Then another cried out, “Let loose.”

Later still a woman came up and said, “
When I was converted a big light hit me in the face and knocked me cold.”

In relating the story the ole preacher commented, “Between trying to hold on, let loose and look for the light I almost missed the Kingdom.”

In short, don’t judge yourself by what others have felt.

God made us all separate entities and all cannot have a Damascus road experience.

For some it is a slow process but no less real or soul deep or meaningful.

For some it is a gentle laying on of the hands of Christ as “The peace that passeth understanding makes its inroads.”

For some it is an intellectual journey…men like Lew Wallace, a famous general, literary genius and well known atheist.

For two years he studied in the leading libraries of Europe and America, seeking information that would forever destroy Christianity. Then one day while writing the second chapter of the book dedicated to destroying faith he suddenly found himself on his knees crying out to Jesus, “My Lord and my God.”

Later he wrote Ben Hur, one of the greatest English novels ever written concerning the time of Christ.

Another literary giant and agnostic, C.S. Lewis, professor at Oxford University in England denied the deity of Christ for years. But finally with
Intellectual honesty, he submitted his soul to Jesus. The overwhelming evidence that this Christ of the open road was the Son of God could not be denied.

He wrote countless books to prove the existence of this Lord, Mere Christianity being the most well known of the lot.

An emotional experience…an experience of the mind…whatever the reason or a combination of reasons the truth of this Savior has reached so many who could have in their fame felt otherwise.
“A man of colossal dimensions,” wrote Ernest Renan of Jesus, this scholar who at first tried to tear the Bible to pieces and finally relented before the eternal truth.
