WE LIVE LIFE FORWARDS AND TOO OFTEN UNDERSTAND IT BACKWARDS or HINDSIGHT, THY NAME IS GENIUS!

Now is a good time to tell a story about a wild duck that each fall when the winds grew colder would, with great vigor, flap his wings and aim toward a warmer south.

He had done this for many such seasons but this year was to be different for a disagreeable accident would take place…but then I am getting ahead of my story.

During this particular flight, he had winged as usual past cities and small towns, over highways and dusty roads, but then, as he flew low to get a better view of the land below, he spotted a barnyard.

A great fenced in area full of quacking, domestic-cated ducks being fed. He looked down with great pity and continued to fly on a bit, but on the evening breeze he continued to catch the sweet smell of fine grain such as he had never smelled before. He paused and that was enough. He turned back.

He still had a long ways to go, but he turned back. He began having second and third thoughts. Why not? I can just stop for a free meal and then be on my way.

He set his wings for a perfect three point landing and soon was feasting to his hearts content. He ate greedily and long, so much so that afterwards he was sleepy, very sleepy, and so decided to take an after dinner nap. To his surprise he slept the whole night through.

The next morning when he awakened he was very angry at himself. “I must be off,” he quacked under his breath, and moved to the far end of the yard to give himself room for takeoff. And then he thought to himself, I have a long, long way to go. It would be foolish not to have a going-away breakfast first.

The ending of this story could not be more obvious. He never did fly away. He succumbed to the easy way, the way of the crowd, and opened up the floodgates for what became a life-changing event, the loss of his freedom.

As time went on he remembered less and less what it was like before he joined the crowd and paid the price. (rewrite and edit of a story by Kierkegaard)

What am I saying? I am saying men die spiritually the same way they die physically. Usually by degrees. An ethic is forgotten, a point of honor is denied, an article of faith is misplaced and then no longer sought after. Residence taken up in a valley of indecision. Water is drunk from a lake of procrastination. Food is consumed from a field of false promises.

And the harvest? It is then a forest that has none of the seeking of God in it.

CAN YOU CAST A SHADOW WITHOUT THE SUN?

These thoughts are added to each day. Scroll down and read previous One A Days.)
(Use in your personal or church newsletters) (365 stories a year)

Once upon a time a tribe of very isolated people with little knowledge of anything in the modern world received a sundial.

It was a gift from friends in the outer world and they were supremely joyous when it arrived. They shouted with glee, beat upon their drums and danced long into the night. And then they made a decision, “Let us treat this present with the respect it is due. Let us build a shelter to keep it in.”

So they did.

They built a hut, a great tremendous, overwhelming hut, taller than any other hut in the entire village. Then within the hut they built a throne upon which they put the sundial and then began to treat it with great and overwhelming respect and honor. And very soon, very soon, they realized that the sundial no longer worked.

With no sun in the secluded, shadowed shelter of the hut, it did not work.

“Seek ye first the kingdom of God…” Seek it in the sunlight where all can see. Seek it with such enthusiasm you leave yourself wide open for spiritual serendipities.

All manner of things happen in life and you cannot know what they will be, but if you seek first the kingdom of God…first and foremost…well, let’s put it this way, “Men are often spiritual failures not because they are spiritually stupid but because they are not sufficiently impassioned.” (rewrite of statement by Struthers Bart)

The book of Proverbs puts it this way: (Proverbs 29:18) “Where there is no vision the people perish.”

The Prodigal Son prayed a prayer that should be a challenge to everyone who reads or hears it. “Make me even as a hired servant. Make me anything but what I was.”

Would you have an ongoing Spiritual Serendipity that offers one agreeable accident after another? I believe I have said this once or twice in the last few minutes,
“Seek ye first the Kingdom of God…”

THE SAME OLD ERRORS? ONE LINERS FOR YOUR SOULL

BELOW OME LINER AND ONE A DAY FOR THIS MARCH 29
MAKE THE BEST FROM THENWORST
Once there was an oyster whose story now I tell,

And about a grain of sand that worked beneath his shell.

Just one little grain, but oh such pain for yes,

Oysters have feelings, even though they’re so plain.

This oyster, however, didn’t curse the heavens for such a deplorable state.

Nor berate the government, or call for an election,

Or demand the sea give him immediate protection.

No, he just lay down on a rocky shelf

And talked again and again to his irritated self.

Saying, “If I cannot remove it, I’ll try to improve it.”

Then the years rolled by, as years always do,

And he came to his ultimate destiny in a restaurant stew;

And in place of the sand that had bothered him so

Was a beautiful pearl all richly aglow.

The tale you have heard has a moral, isn’t it grand

wonderful things oysters can do with only a morsel of sand.

What couldn’t we do to make life better,

If we’d only begin with all the things
that get under our skin

OLD ERRORS

Several decades ago, a scientific survey at the University of Wisconsin revealed that professors who had been teaching for 20 years were no better than some teaching only two or three years.

But those who
, every few years returned to college for refresher courses and to study new techniques, improved.

Those who didn’t just stagnated.

That’s why it is so important to put God on your calendar and keep Him there.

Even a man or woman “born again” needs a daily rebirth, a daily re-evaluation of habits, a daily upgrading, a daily analysis of yesterday’s happenings.

We can change for the better but not if we keep tripping over the same old errors. Let me say that again - We can change for the better but not if we keep tripping over the same old errors.

“May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.”- Romans 15:13

Do you remember the cartoonist Al Capp and his cartoon strip Li’l Abner?

Remember the character named Joe Pssst who carried around his own little rain cloud wherever he went?

Unfortunately, as the clock goes tick, tick, tick too many folk wake up each day with their their own little rain cloud – their soul full of doubts, their heart full of hate and their mind full of gripes.

The Shakespeare syndrome I call it. Remember Hamlet? He must have been a jolly companion to have around all day since the best description of life he could come up with was that it was, “stale, flat and unprofitable.”

Do you remember, when you still quite young, how you learned that by focusing the rays of the sun through a magnifying glass you could burn a hole through a leaf, or etch your initials on the side of a tree?

Well, that is why it is so important to meet God in the morning and carry Him with you through the day.

It is a holy habit that can help you to bring all your scattered ethics into focus, to pinpoint your decisions with heavenly meaning, and give proper direction to your deeds.

In short, pray “God, help me” at breakfast so you will be able to pray “God, thank you,” at dinner.

"Keep thy heart with all diligence, for out of it (the heart) are found the issues of life. For as a man thinketh in his heart so is he." Proverbs 4:23, Proverbs 23:7

Ralph Waldo Emerson mused, “Rings and jewels are not gifts, but apologies for gifts. The only gift is a portion of thyself.”

A century ago, the average worker spent 70 hours on the job and lived 40 years. Now, he or she works an average 40 hours a week and lives 70 plus years. That’s 1500 more free hours a year and a total of over 33,000 additional free hours in a lifetime. That’s a lot of boredom or anxiety, guilt or pride, or, God willing, the proper use of such abundance. Tick, tick, tick.

Romans 8:28 “And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose.”

Sam was still at home.

His family had gone to church. He didn’t go with them. He never did. He knew it would please them and somehow in the back of his mind and a corner of his soul he knew it would be a pleasing thing to do, but he just didn’t.

It was cold and getting colder.

The snow had started out slow and soft. Now the wind had shifted and it was becoming a blizzard. Then it hit him. The animals, he had not gone to the barn to warm them with heaters as he always did.

What had happened to him?

How could he forget? He quickly got dressed and hurried toward the barn.

When he opened the barn door it was almost as cold inside as it was outside.

When the heaters were lit their expansive heat immediately took over. If a cow could smile he was certain this was what Betsy was doing. Finally, all the animals were taken care of and he moved back out into the windswept cold.

As he moved back toward the house he saw some sparrows on the ground, barely moving. In the branches of a tree, others seemed frozen to their spot.

He knew that because the temperature was dropping so rapidly, they soon would die. What could he do? He could not communicate with them. When he tried to capture them to take them into the barn, they feebly but successfully eluded his grasp.

Oh, if only he could become a sparrow and tell them to fly into the warmth of the barn. Let them know how much he cared for their safety and salvation.

As he had the thought, the air filled with the old church bell ringing.

The westerly wind had carried the sound that extra distance.

At least to him the old bell in the church steeple was ringing like it had never rung before. And he became overwhelmed by a thought, a revelation.

What Christianity truly was hit him in the center of his soul. It was almost more than he could bear. Tears flooded down his cheeks.

“I understand, Lord. After all these years, I understand. We were like sparrows at a loss in a cold, cold world and you came down and became one of us.”

And then, for a moment he entered the mind of a sparrow and becoming one of them knew instantly what it was that he should do.

He raced back to the barn, picked up a bag of seeds and then began to drop seeds from the tree where the sparrows perched back to the now open barn door.

At first, they ignored him, were indifferent to him, almost passed by their opportunity for salvation.

But then some seemed to understand and followed the offering of love, and moved toward the light and the incredible warmth and life. And it was good. God saw it and it was good.

And that is what Christianity is; love. Not indifference. Christianity is not a bureaucrat looking for an excuse not to do something but a Christian opportunist welcoming the opportunity to be a welcoming force.

“…I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers.... will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord." (Romans 8:37-39)

Remember Roger Stauback, the great quarterback for the Dallas Cowboys in the 70’s?

You might think that he would consider those days of old were his glory days.

But he doesn’t.

He has long believed that his future reached far beyond football.

That Christianity is the most important thing in his life.

That with God one can withstand anything life offers.

Roger‘s football feats and awards were great and yet he has never been confused as to what awards really count - God’s awards.

Good old positive thinker Paul put it well, “We are hard pressed on every side, but not crushed; perplexed, but not in despair; persecuted, but not abandoned; struck down, but not destroyed.” (2nd Corinthians 4:8-9)

One day, a little girl and her father, who was not a religious man, were walking by a huge cathedral. Looking up the little girl pointed to the cross high atop its steeple and asked, “Daddy, why is there a big plus sign on top of that building?”

Unfortunately the cross isn’t a plus to everyone.

To some it is a nothing. They consider God’s words empty promises.

But are the promises He gave us worth any less because some refuse to take them?

Of course not, for fools abound.

GO FOR MOUNTAIN PRAYEERS NOT MOLEHILL MUTTERINGS

A mother and son were having lunch together in a restaurant.

When the food had been served the mother said, “Let’s have a silent prayer.”

When finished she saw that her son’s head still was bowed - and remained that way for a long time.

Finally he opened his eyes and began to eat. “What were you praying about all that time?” asked
the mother.

“How do I know?” replied the son. “It was a silent prayer.”
When we pray, we must not do that – be so absentminded and apathetic that a few minutes later we don’t have a clue what we just prayed.

Rather, be concerned with totally committed prayers, not mouthing, Oops, I let my mind go wandering again.

Pray with an intensity that underlines every word that is heaven bound.

Nor when we pray, be satisfied with a bunt.

Go for a home run. Pray mountain prayers – not molehill mutterings.

“Be earnest and unwearied and steadfast in your prayer [life], being [both] alert and intent in [your praying] with thanksgiving.” Colossians 4: 2

The mother of the writer James Barrie had the roots of her Savior dug down deep and strong and relentless in their power.

It is why her son was able to describe her this way. “After the death of her eldest son, my mother came back to her desolate home and bowed herself before her God.

That is how my mother got
her soft face…and her large charities, and why mothers ran to her when they had lost a child.”

Ever hear of Francis Thompson? He was a nineteenth century English poet.

He wrote the poem “Hounds of Heaven” which, take my word for it, to those who know and love poetry is immortal.

Well, Francis Thompson was not always good soil producing such monumental works of artistry.

He first
failed as a student, then as a book agent, as a shoe-maker’s apprentice…and as a soldier.

He often slept on uncomfortable park benches and at twenty-one was a drug addict.

And then someone introduced him to Christ and Francis changed.

He took the seed of truth that is God’s will and way.

He took the seed of Truth that is Jesus and he became not just good soil but super soil.

And the roots of faith took hold and who he was and what he produced changed. Oh how they changed.

Galatians 3:26
“For in Christ Jesus you are all sons of God through faith.”

WHO WANTS A BLACK BELT THAT IS TATTLE TALE GREY

below one liner for your soul

When you talk about heaven your face lights up.  When you talk about hell, your everyday face will do.”

Below new one a day for wed marcch 20

He was a young man but with the discipline of a much older man, and as he knelt before his master sensei in the ceremony to receive his coveted Black Belt he was asked, “What is the meaning of the Black Belt?

The student paused and then replied, “It is the end of my journey and a well-deserved reward for all my years of diligent efforts.”

A look of distress passed over the face of master sensei. “You are not ready for the Black Belt. Come back in one year.”

365 days later, the student knelt again before his teacher and in answer to the same question as to the meaning of the Black Belt replied, “It is a symbol of distinction and the highest achievement in our art.”

Once again, he was rejected and told to return in yet another year.

The student was weary but persistent. 52 weeks later he knelt again before his master teacher and again was asked the question, “What is the true meaning of the Black Belt?”

Unsure, but having thought and diligently prayed for understanding, he replied, “The Black Belt represents not the end but the beginning, the start of a never ending journey of discipline of work and the pursuit of an ever higher standard.”

The smile of approval on his teacher’s countenance was all the answer he required. He had learned the secret that a second mile is only a beginning and not an end.

What I have been trying to say was well said by a piece of ancient wisdom from India. “When you were born, you cried and the world rejoiced. Now live your life in such a manner that when you die, the world cries and you rejoice.”

That is what the secret of the second mile achieves. A life more wonderful than wasted. A life more humble than hateful. A life that heard Christ speak and answered with actions.

“Whosoever shall compel thee to go one mile, go with him two.” Matthew 5:41

HOW TO MAKE A BURDEN HEAVIER

Two monks approached a river where the bridge was out.

Seated by the river was an older woman who could not walk to the other side, because of the shallow but rushing water walk to the other side.

She was quite overweight and it was not easy for the two monks to lift her and between them carry her to the other side, but they did. Once put down, she thanked them and went on her way.

The monks rested awhile and then continued their journey.

One of the monks, however, could hardly take a step without complaining, “That foolish woman who did not check out some other way to make it across the stream. My back is killing me and getting stiffer by the minute.”

Variations on the complaint continued for mile after mile.

Finally, the other monk turned to his complaining friend and said, “You may wonder why I am not complaining. It is quite simple. I set her down five miles ago.”

We do that, don’t we? Too often, really. Don’t use the SCRIPTURAL second mile to remove resentments but rather mile after mile of living feed them.

So? Why grow toward love rather than grow toward more resentment? Because growth in whatever direction you choose is evidence of the kind of person you actually desire to become.

Do you know what you do when you walk that second mile?

You reach out to understand, in a new way, the mind of Christ.

If you do not use that second mile to mellow, you muddy your soul. Walk that second mile the way Christ wants you to and you begin to understand the Kingdom Ethic in a new and more vigorous way.

Why walk the second mile hand in hand with Christ?

Because it leads you to not have pleasure without conscience, knowledge without character, commerce without morality, religion without sacrifice or politics without principle. (A redirection of thoughts by Mahatma Ghandi)

It is a spiritually cleansing mile. A cleansing, clearing 20/20 moral visionary mile.

WHAT DO YOU FEED TIME?

There was a man named Dr. Brackett.

To say that he was unusual in his dedication toward other people would be an understatement.

He started early thinking about others rather than himself and he never wavered.

Most would argue that he carried his dedication too far when on his wedding day he asked his bride to postpone their wedding so he could rush to save a sick, little Mexican boy. She obviously agreed it was too much to ask and called the wedding off.

And this became his life. Not from dawn to dusk, but long before and after, did he work to continually reach thousands in need.

Finally, when he was in his 70’s he died, and his funeral was the largest his little southwestern town had ever seen.

They were poor people. Very, very poor people in this little town and surrounding area, and they could not afford a stone for his grave.

No problem. The dilemma was solved by the parents of the little Mexican boy whose life he had saved on what was to be his wedding day.

Now old and feeble, they nevertheless made their way to his office and with great difficulty carefully pried the brass plate off his door.

It had been there for many years. Now it had a final, highly appropriate resting place, for the next day the brass plate rested on his grave and read rather appropriately “Dr. Brackett – Office Upstairs.” (Sangster, Rewrite of a story in The People Who Ministered to Him.)

What does the scriptural admonition to go the extra mile mean to you? Perhaps it is giving extra time to someone you love rather than one day saying, “I wish I had given more time to this one I loved.”

Time is a friend if we use it wisely, an enemy when we foolishly waste it.

Would you appreciate the value of thirty days - only thirty days?
Speak to a mother who gave birth 30 days too soon to a premature baby.

Would you appreciate the value of a few minutes - just a few minutes?
Think of that day you stood in this church, or some other church, and made your public pledge of faith to Almighty God.

Would you argue as to the worth of such minutes spent?

Would you appreciate the value of one little second? Talk to someone who but for a single second would have been killed in a fatal accident. (Edited, rewritten and shortened from Dynamic Preaching, King Duncan)

A second-mile-person appreciates time and is appalled at how often it is wasted. Just remember, “The future is not a place we are going (to) – (it is) a place we are creating.” (William Jennings Bryan)

“Owe no one anything except to love one another... Love does no harm to a neighbor; therefore love is the fulfillment of the law” (Rom. 13:8, 10).

SANE OR INSANE

To every person who lives as if they believe that Christianity and Christ teachings are madness…I say, “If this be madness then perhaps we should double check our definition of sanity.”

A CONTINUATIONOF THOUGHTS ON THE RIGHT SIDE OF FOREVER

There are certain scriptures one cannot hear to often.

“Do not lay up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys, and where thieves do not break in or steal; for where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.” (Matt 6:19-21)

Ernest Hemingway was no theologian but he was a thinking man’s friend. He once wrote,
“The man who has begun to live more seriously within begins to live more simply without.”

To end up on the right side of forever requires consistent, persistent study and thought, prayer and follow-through and the ability to simplify, simplify, simplify.

It is all about living a balanced life that does not deny the needs of the body but also definitely does not deny the needs of the soul.

“To seek first the kingdom of God does not mean we have to give up our lamps but it does mean we need to focus on the stars.” (rewrite/author unknown)

HOW DO YOU DEFINE WOSHIP?

Do you remember the comedian Jack Benny?

On his weekly radio program there was an on-going skit in which Jack opened the vault in which he kept all his money.

You couldn’t see it, of course, remember this was radio, but you could hear the multitude of locks being unlocked one after the other and chains rattling.

Above all the noise required to reach his cache, Rochester would yell, “Mr. Benny, you can’t take it with you.”

And always Jack would yell back, “Then I’m not going.”

A missionary named Jim Elliott who gave his all while keeping very little for himself once wrote, “He is no fool who gives what he cannot keep to gain what he cannot lose.”

You know why there are so many unhappy people with tons and tons of things? They use people just like they use the things they collect. And they have much, and yet they have absolutely nothing, all at the same time.

“For the wages which sin pays is death, but the [bountiful] free gift of God is eternal life through (in union with) Jesus Christ our Lord.” Romans 6: 23
