The 26 year old Korean graduate student had been studying hard for a political science exam. To take a break he went out to mail a letter.

The letter was mailed but he never got back to his apartment.

A gang of violent teenagers were looking for someone to rob so they could go to a dance.

The young Korean was at the wrong place at the wrong time. They robbed and killed him.

The authorities broke the case and arrested the young hoodlums.

They showed no remorse or regret. The fact is they sneered at the policemen who arrested and displayed outright arrogance at their trial.

The members of the Koreans mother took up an offering so she could come to the trial.

Therefore, she was there when they were sentenced to death.

What she did next left many in the courtroom speechless.

She walked forward, fell to her knees in front of the judge and pled that their lives be spared.

What the teenagers did next was their first positive response to the murders.

They began to weep and express their sorrow for what they had done.

Repentance comes slowly with some and sometimes not at all…but when it does come…hand in hand with forgiveness…those angels in heaven sing again.

For if you forgive people their trespasses [their reckless and willful sins, leaving them, letting them go, and giving up resentment], your heavenly Father will also forgive you.

That morning in 1964 I had my right kidney removed I was fully aware that I might be severely crippled because of certain muscles that in that age of surgery had to be cut through…

So I prayed, “Lord protect me for I have work to do and if I must live with some crippling allow me the privilege of praying a constant dream of thanksgiving for the blessings I will continue to have.”

My surgeon was one of the best and I was another of his successful surgeries but what counted equally as much was the gift of courage and serenity that God gave me.

Indeed, just before the time of surgery I asked the nurse what my pulse rate was and she replied, “Completely normal.”

Courage is fear that has said its prayers.

These thoughts are added to each day.

In my seminary graduating class there were several of my friends who faced distinct challenges to say the least.

One suffered from epileptic seizures. He made light of this fact as he prepared to go out to his first pastorate, “Well, if I have a fit in the pulpit, it won’t last forever and besides my congregation will know it might happen, so what’s to worry about.”

Another friend of mine, in our first Seminary year, stuttered so badly one could barely understand what he was saying when he preached. Plus his sermon lasted twice as long with half the content.

By the time he headed toward his first church his improvement was nothing short of miraculous.
I still remember seeing him out on the athletic field pacing back and forth while he tried to tame his recalcitrant tongue.

Stumbling blocks turned into stepping stone.

Anyone can fall and all of us do and more than once.

The difference is that some people get back up and keep on going and others just lie there.

It all comes down to whether or not you can be satisfied with being Never-was and Never-tried-to-be.

Ben Franklin said it, “When you get to the end of your rope. Tie a knot in it and hang on.”

A number of years ago, Don Schollander, an Olympic gold medal winner in swimming discussed the dangers of fame.

After he had won the Olympic medal he began receiving an unbelievable number of calls to speak and be given Awards real, pseudo and otherwise.

He turned them down on a regular basis.

His explanation was as follows, “If I had accepted all those invitations I would no longer be able to have the time to work out, to hone my skills and to continue to be a championship swimmer. Indeed I would grow fat, flunk out of college and be an utter failure in what had brought me to such an Olympic honor.”

He would then pause and close with the following statement, “The pool is filled is filled with sweat, not water.”

And that is how it is with all of us. Success that comes easily goes quickly sometimes if we reach an “I deserve it” attitude I can sit back and coast now. True no matter what the goal is.

Indeed, I love the quote “Fame and riches are fleeting. Stupidity is forever.”

Rev. Vivian Symons, a young English minister looked at his world after World War II as a challenge rather than an a series of impossibilities. There was a shortage of everything so…

So, because he wanted to build a new church and new materials were a problem he took the dilemma, cranked up his imagination and energy and found nothing can stop one if one does not want to be stopped.

He received permission to take an old no longer used church in ill repair and literally falling down around itself and began to move it…stone by stone by stone.

He did this virtually all by himself.125,000 bricks, 400 tons of stone, 70,000 tiles, two and a half tons of lead and a huge amount of rubble for the foundation.

He sometimes would stop a moment and wonder if perhaps he were just a little out of his mind…
But then he would grin and pray and go back for another load.

He mashed his fingers. He skinned his knees. He pulled muscles he hadn’t even known he had.
“But what satisfaction in the suffering,” he would say to himself.

His will was stronger than his won’t and he was a great mathematician because when he would grow weary he would say to himself, “One more load. I can certainly move one more load. Thank you God, I can count.”

Below is a quote from the serialization of my novel RUST ON MY SOUL. (Go to Wyrick’s Writings to start reading it.)

It wasn’t a dream. Connie did come home yesterday. And now the restoration of a family must begin.

Somehow I must find the right words at the right time and forget the reruns in the movie house of my mind.

“I hate you, dad!”
