We all know the old phrase, Curiosity killed the cat.  In the case of Lot’s wife, it turned her into a pillar of salt.  No wisdom there.

Nor was Peter utilizing a great deal of wisdom, and loyalty, when he denied Christ not once, but three times over.

But fear makes us do a lot of things we otherwise would not do.  We know what is right yet sometimes we fear what people will say or do, and we go into self-protection mode.

Dumb comes easily to all of us.

I’ve hit my finger with a hammer.  I’ve slammed a car door on my hand.  I’ve stuck my foot in my mouth by saying what afterwards I knew I should have had the good sense not to say.  No wisdom there, either.
We’ve all had stupid moments.

The Bible uses a different, gentler word for it – Foolishness

Two men were talking, and the first man asked, “Do you know the Commandments of the Lord?”

And the second man answered, “Yes.”

“And what do you do with them?”

“I pick and chose.” he replied.  “I pick and chose.”

That’s not very wise, is it?

M.D., PhD, DD - we see these titles after a name and many think wisdom…I see these titles and I think knowledge…there is a difference.

Knowledge is the beginning of wisdom, but it is no guarantee.  I have known some knowledgeable fools and so have you.

Tell me what a man’s intelligence has produced and I will tell whether I think he is wise or not.

Knowledge can, and does, produce arrogance, misused power, pride and selfishness.

Billy Graham once said, “Knowledge is horizontal.  Wisdom is vertical.”

Yes, true wisdom comes down from above.  And when we act with too little wisdom, here comes our heavenly Father again, forgiving us and forgiving us and forgiving us.

        THE SPIRITUAL ABRAHAM LINCOLN
“A book superior in style and content)

A  Quote FROM Rev. Wyrick’s 9TH BOOK “THE SPIRITUAL ABRAHAM LINCOLN”

No matter what he spoke, the same confusion as to who Lincoln really was, existed just as much in his time as in ours.  Poor fellow, when he was through speaking, almost every newspaper in the North said he had extended an olive branch and almost every paper in the South that he extended a sword.

I almost drowned once. It is a terrifying experience. One gets very used to breathing. I had taught swimming in summer camp. Passed the Red Cross Life Saving course. Water-skied 50 miles an hour. Now I found I could not even stand to have the water flow over my face when I took a shower.

So I had two choices. Give in to my fear or fight it.

I fought it. Stuck my head in a few inches of water in a basin for five seconds, then ten and finally a minute. I kept working on my private demon until one day, six month later, I was behind a ski boat with ski rope in hand. I was filled with panic, not just fear. I skied anyway. I fell and did not drown. I began to overcome the anxiety.

I refused to have a love affair with fear that could have become a permanent downer. Did I completely conquer my fear? No. Was I better off than if I had given in? Definitely.

----- ------ ---------- A number of years ago two scientists conducted an experiment with a sheep. They tied a piece of wire around the leg of a normal sheep in the midst of other sheep. Then at regular intervals they would send an electric shock through the wire making the leg twitch. The sheep’s behavior remained normal. He ate well, slept well, acted quite nicely, twitching appendage and all. Then the scientists added another factor.

They began to ring a bell ten seconds before they administered the shock. Within a very short period of time the sheep began to demonstrate all the symptoms of severe anxiety neurosis. His eating habits went from bad to worse. He couldn't sleep. He took to avoiding the other sheep. He became highly nervous and agitated.

It is the same with all the people who every day promise themselves it is going to be a bad day, and then work very hard at making their prophecy come true.

"She won't listen to her conscience. She doesn't want to take advice from a total stranger."

How do you look at your conscience?  As an enemy or a friend?  It has had to struggle with social norms which are certainly not always right.

I quote Martin Luther King quite often but then Martin made some startling astute statements.

Four decades ago he stood up before a large audience of many strata of society and he said the following, “We must shift from a “thing” oriented society to a “person-oriented society.

When machines and computers, profit motives and property and militarism are incapable of being conquered.

A civilization can flounder as readily in the face of moral and spiritual bankruptcy as it can through financial bankruptcy.”

I guess it all boils down to deciding which is most important, to feel good or do good because some sins are fun or profitable or both (else wise why would people do them), conform or change, be booed for daring to suggest the moral climate needs adjustment or receiving applause because you simply are willing to go with the immoral flow.

The poem is too long to quote all of it so I quote only the first stanza.
I have to live with myself, and so
I want to be fit for myself to know,
I want to be able, as days go by,
Always to look myself straight in the eye;
I don't want to stand, with the setting sun, And hate myself for the things I've done.
THE SPIRITUAL ABRAHAM LINCOLN
A book superior in style and content)
A  Quote FROM Rev. Wyrick’s 9TH BOOK “THE SPIRITUAL ABRAHAM LINCOLN”

Would it have made any difference if the man who was President of the United States during the Civil War had not been a Christian?  It took the lives of over six hundred thousand young men, one in every five of the country’s best, so it is no small question to ask.  Is there always the danger that a Christian leader will still be arrogant, angry and more than willing to shape pruning hooks into spears?7  Unfortunately, yes.  But not Abe.  His words spell out clearly how he felt about solutions by the sword.  “The man does not live who is more devoted to peace than I am.  None who would do more to preserve it.”

DON’T TRY TO CLIMB A MOUNTAIN UNTIL YOU HAVE CONQUERED A HILL

John Ruskin, an 19th century English author and art critic, would sometimes agree to take a new art student, but before he ever had him paint a scene or even draw a line, he would have him take an opal and study its coloring from every possible angle until he knew it by heart.

At another school for modern art, the student is closed up in a room containing nothing but paintings of a certain style.  In this isolation with and concentration, the student learns more about this method than through a dozen lectures.

Would you learn how to pray?  Then, in the manner of these art students, take some time to think on it and about it, to concentrate and focus and then, do it.  “For as a man thinketh, so is he.” reads a portion of the book of Proverbs.

And some of you may at this moment be thinking, “But I can’t concentrate on anything for very long, let alone God.”  And I would reply, “Don’t try to climb a mountain until you have learned how to conquer a
hill.”

The policeman was writing a ticket and the man he was writing it for was not very happy.  It was a driver’s license that had expired.  Then the policeman, Sgt. Ray Baarz of the Midvale, Utah, police department took it to the city judge and paid his five dollar fine

That’s right.  He had written the ticket to himself.

“How could I give a ticket to anyone else for an expired license in the future if I didn’t cite myself?”

While it may be carrying things a bit far, perhaps it should be a custom to have a funeral service when someone has let their conscience die.

And have all the family and friends of  the man or woman attend; and by so doing admit that since the conscience is now dead no one will be hearing from it anymore.  And, oh yes, the man, the former owner of the conscience should certainly also attend.

Check your conscience regularly to make sure it is improving what you are doing, saying and becoming.

Do not let your conscience get spiritual laryngitis.

If ever you should weep copiously it should be at the funeral of your conscience.

Be careful when you consider ignoring your conscience…that is God speaking.

Conscience

Conscience. The word is not found in the O.T. The chief passage in the N.T. is Rom. 2:14–15.

THE SPIRITUAL ABRAHAM LINCOLN
“A book superior in style and content)

A  Quote FROM Rev. Wyrick’s 9TH BOOK “THE SPIRITUAL ABRAHAM LINCOLN”

To mention Christianity today is to create a firestorm of complaint.  “We must assure separation of church and state” is the politically correct outcry.  Unfortunately, most who are straining their vocal chords, have not strained any intellectual efforts to research how the original quote actually reads.

When Thomas Jefferson dipped his pen and began to put down his thoughts, he wrote, “a wall of separation between Church and State.”  Even more interesting is the reason why it was written.  A group of less than joyous Baptists in Connecticut did not want to have their denomination play second fiddle to the Congregationalists.  The Congregationalists?  They would have been perfectly willing to be top dog as the state’s choice.  Episcopalians in Virginia were no less reluctant to create the same problem, if given half a chance.  Thomas Jefferson stuck by his guns in this state, as well.

Separation of church and state?  But should that mean separation of God and man?
