PERSISTENT PATIENCE

Because of erosion, the historic Cape Hatteras Lighthouse was in danger of being washed into the Atlantic Ocean.

So Congress appropriated $12 million for the National Park service to move it 2900 feet to safety.
With a combination of care, expertise, patience and raw power, The Expert House Movers of Sharptown, Maryland moved the 208 foot tall, 9.7 million pound structure to its current home.          The option of moving the lighthouse was first proposed in April of 1982, but the light wasn’t actually lit at its new location until November 13, 1999. 17 years of study and 23 days of moving later.

Small achievements require very little time to achieve,..sometimes hardly more than the time it took to have an idea.

The achievement of larger goals or the completion of greater dreams takes two steps forward and one step backwards...and sometimes this speed of progresion definitely requires persistent patience...

Just one example and you come up with one of your own... before worrying about getting in the last word during an argument, why not consider getting in the first word for understanding?

Before always trying to win with a loud mouth, why not consider listening with a patient ear?

          Sometimes it isn’t easy.

There are even times when it is only a hoot and a holler away from being impossible.

But far more times than you will probably admit, a soft patient voice will quiet a louder one and both of you or all of you, will begin to better understand each of you.

          Patience...it's rewards are great.

The tenor Luciano Pavarotti relates the following. " "When I was a boy, my father, a baker, introduced me to the wonders of song," Then he urged me to work very hard to develop my voice. Arrigo Pola, a professional tenor in my hometown of Modena, Italy, took me as a pupil. I also enrolled in a teachers college. On graduating, I asked my father, 'Shall I be a teacher or a singer?'

"'Luciano,' my father replied, 'if you try to sit on two chairs, you will fall between them. For life, you must choose one chair.'

"I chose one. It took seven years of study and frustration before I made my first professional appearance. It took another seven to reach the Metropolitan Opera. And now I think whether it's laying bricks, writing a book--whatever we choose--we should give ourselves to it. Commitment, that's the key. Choose one chair."

As long as your heart does not grow cold, your mind stagnant and your soul asleep, no matter what happens to your body, the vigor of your attitude will always put a glow in your eyes and a glimmer in your living.

Therefore, allow me to ask these questions.  If tomorrow were your last chance to love, would you still chose hate?

If tomorrow were your last chance to show patience, would you still chose anger?

If tomorrow were your last change to worship God would you still put Him in second or even further down the line for things to think about?

If somehow you could sneak into tomorrow without it becoming today what would you see?

RUST ON MY SOUL (Last entry)

This is the final entry in the serialization of my novel RUST ON MY SOUL.(Bridge Press)

It began on my other blog Wyrick's Writings ...on April 13th

In an old loose leaf notebook, Thomas Kettering wrote when there was a cry from his heart. He wrote when his inner longing spilled over into the reality of his days. He did not write every day, only when he felt he must. How often he wrote or when is not important. The journey is what counts, for it is a diary about all of us, to all of us. “A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step,” and even a stumble is a step.

If you would like to go back to the beginning of this novel click on the URL below
and then go back to April 13th

Evening

I drove by the state prison this morning on my way to a new franchise we opened in Johnson City. I knew it was there, I'd just never been by it before.

A place of bars and chain fences and barbed wire.

I watched the inmates walk from nowhere to nowhere. Parole? For some no more than a short future away. And when the gates open, who will walk out? The same man who went in? Ifso, he will soon return, a prisoner never really free. A prisoner without hope.

I thought, "that was I." For so long, I was a prisoner without hope. Never really free. The walls of my ego fenced me in. The walls of my anger against God holding me back. The walls of peer pressure, even at my age, restricting freedom at every turn.

But not now. Free now to love God. Free to fall and be promptly lifted up, forgiven. Free to run before the winds of higher ethics with God shouting, "Go, my child. Give it your best. Give it your all."

 Evening

The pitting is not gone. The critical etchings, a reminder of my yesterdays, will always be with me, but the corrosion that took the shine from my soul has all but disappeared.

This will be my last entry. My musings have served their purpose. I have cried, shouted, cursed, moaned. Here, in this journal, I found a place to stare at myself with intrepid honesty, to seek to rebuild without illusion.

I may pick up these pages-some day-should my wanderings need a road map again. I cannot say I now completely understand me, or God, or His world, or heaven above. But God understands, and that's enough for me.

As a little boy I used to build dams of sand.  I would construct these engineering miracles across some rushing stream and watch the water rise and the pressure build, and then it would happen.  A small chink in the armor of my dam of sand, a breakthrough ever so small, and suddenly catastrophe.  Like a giant the water would rush through, and my dam would disintegrate before my eyes.

What I had built, with only my hands to stem the water’s tide, could not retain the pressure.  Life is like that, my friends.

Life pushes and frets from every side.  Its constant pressures grow and grow, and if a man tries to retain these only by his own hand, like my little dam of long ago, it just won’t last for long.

“The Lord is my shepherd…he is my right hand…In the Lord I put  my trust.”  (Psalm 23:1; 168; 11:1,K.J.V.)

These Biblical truths are not just pretty phrases to be read, they are eternal messages to be lived.  They are the unbreakable might and power that come to a life that takes them at their word.

CRITICISM

                          CRITICISM

"How dare you disagree with me?"  "Don't you know that I have thought it through completely and there is absolutely positively no way I could be wrong and you could be right."

Sounds like a conversation in congress these days doesn't it?

Or during your last family gathering?

Or between you and your wife or husband or child?  We humans do not on the whole take criticism too well and what a shame?  What a terrible waste of ideas as time after time two or people major in speaking and minor in listening.

Pride?  Indeed, are you ever guilty of having a love affair with yourself, walking down the highways and by-ways of life...holding your own hand.

Criticism can lift you up because you can learn things or it can drag you down.

Moses learned this and he didn't take to it too well.  Here he was leading a people to the Promised Land and all they could do was argue about the menu.  "If only we had died by the Lord's hand in Egypt!  There we sat around pots of meat and ate all the food we wanted but you brought us out into this desert to starve this entire assembly to death."  (Exodus 16:3)

In Egypt everything had been going from bad to worse.  Their children had been massacred.  They had been oppressed as slaves and what was he getting for his trouble, criticism followed by criticism followed by more criticism and he grew tired of it.

He wanted appreciation.  He wanted agreement.  He wasn't getting either.

Have you ever been like Moses?  Worked your heart out for family or at work and then felt you weren't appreciated?  And what did you do?  Did you try to get in the other person's frame of reference or did you in pouting and out of sorts inwardly demand they buy into yours.

Moses and maturity?  For awhile there they weren't holding hands at all.

One reason people don't take criticism well is because most people are ready to admit that everyone deserves some.  But certainly not themselves.  And no one is always right that's for sure...but they don't buy into that truth.

Of course, there is a way to make it so you receive no criticism or very little.  Somehow become a dictator like Chavez in Venezuela.  If anybody dares to criticize him and it's off with their heads or their position as head of state or head of a television station that dares to say he has been wrong.

          J. C. Penney wrote a book entitled What an Executive Should Know about Himself. He asked this question: "Can you take criticism?" Then he quoted Chicago department store magnate Marshall Field.

Those who enter to buy, support me.

Those who come to flatter, please me.

Those who complain, teach me how I may please others so that more will come.

Only those hurt me who are displeased but do not complain. They refuse me permission to correct my errors and thus improve my service and myself.

Praise is a wonderful "pick me up" but we don't learn as much from it.

There is a certain arrogance to not being able to take criticism.  A not to subtle statement that says you are ALWAYS right.

For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted.(Luke 14:11)

Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit, but in humility consider others better than yourselves.
(Philippians 2:3)

All of you, clothe yourselves with humility toward one another, because, "God opposes the proud, but gives grace to the humble." (1 Peter 5:5)

Samuel Stokes, an American missionary, walked through the Punjab, carrying only a water-bottle and blanket, trusting wholly to native hospitality.

In one village he was given a particularly hostile reception. The headmen of the village sat in chairs in a circle, smoking, leaving him the whole evening sitting on the floor.

When he asked if he might nurse their sick and teach them, they hurled horrible insults at him; but he made no reply. Then they gave him stale crusts in a filthy bowl. He thanked them courteously, and ate.

For two days this lasted. On the third day, the headman laid his turban at Stokes' feet as a token of respect. He explained that they had heard that Jesus' disciples were commanded to love their enemies, and had decided to put him to the test. The result had amazed them.

Now they brought him their choicest food, and were eager to hear his teaching. If he had lost his temper, he would have lost his chance

A dozen prayers are not equal to one act of honest forgiveness or as Will Rogers once warned, “Anyone who flies off in a rage is going to have a very rocky landing.”

Excessive pride and forgiveness are not friends and indeed anger is a wind that blows out the lamp of the mind.

The Hebrew word forgiveness means healing, therapy, cleansing so the next time we want to practice righteous indignation it will be well to remember that  most indignation is not righteous, just indignant.

God is bigger than the biggest stock market rise or crash. He’s bigger than the latest technological breakthrough.

All the earthly pomp and pageantry in the world to install a president or a king is play-acting as against the eternal ruler of all nations and all mankind.  An office on the 61st floor may well be great, but never forget God looks out from the heights of heaven.  Danger sign!

If we play the game called “Earthly mightiness” and thereby put ourselves on a pedestal that should be reserved for God, we have just made one grandiose mistake.

God is so awe-inspiring with a true and eternal greatness.  After all He could and did send his Son to die an ignoble death and turned what had before been a shame into a salvation.  This God before whom we bow and call out to in prayer.

Nearer my God to thee? You can’t get much closer to WOW than an eternal NOW.  For God is here, now, through the power of the Holy Spirit.  He is, He was, He evermore shall be.   Believe anything less and you have just signed up for trouble 101.

Our scientist are always talking about the big bang theory.  You want a big bang, try the noiseless silence of an anemic faith.

“Be ye doers of the word and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves.” (James 1:22)

“If you are fighting the ultimate evil, you want to be ultimately good.”

You know why more Christians don’t act like it and unfortunately in the process inspire non-Christians to remain non-Christians?

The answer is simple, some-times we’re so busy claiming the rest of the world is going to the dogs we forget to examine our own kennel..  But then deception is always easier than reception.

I suppose it all starts to boil down to whether we are more interested in religion than a relationship.  More interested in arguing theology than living with our Lord.

In reality, life is a voting booth where we get to make up our minds and hearts as to what type of person we want to be.  God gives us the freedom of choice.

Then we either choose spiritual inertia – being the kind of Christian who has a charming smile and a ready excuse, or we choose to be a Christian who practices duty, diligence, dedication and devotion.

“Doers of the word”  There is the magic phrase.  God’s men and women not looking to be let off the hook or courting excuses.   Rather chasing challenges.

Being a river Jordan rather than a dead sea.

Not a convenient Christianity because there is nothing convenient about a faith that tells us to love our enemies, to control our anger, to give our money, to practice humility and perform the inconvenient.
