DREAMS CAN COME TRUE…but not if they remain only dreams.

In 1925 Gutzon Borglum had a dream. He wanted to turn an obscure rock face, 6000 foot high Mount Rushmore, into giant sculptures of George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, Thomas Jefferson and Theodore Roosevelt.

Many thought him out of his mind; a dream without any hope of completion.

But he ignored the written and vebal jibes and began
with experienced miners to with jackhammers and dynamite remove 400,000 tons of outer rock.

Cutting within three inches of the final surface.

When he died in 1941 his dream of the world’s largest sculpture was near completion.

His son Lincoln finished the wok that October, some 14 years after it was begun.

He was just a little boy and he was spending a great deal of time staring out the window at the moon.

Finally his mother asked him “Why?”

With utter seriousness he looked up at her and said, “Mother, one day I am going to walk on that moon.”

32 years later he did. Despite a motorcycle accident that broke almost every bone in his body, James Irwin, Apollo 15, 1971, astronaut did.

Dreams

Dreams do sometimes come true.
And if instead they die upon a vine
we are still the better off for having dug around the roots.

It is then they have been a teacher if only for a little while.
No dream really dies
Unless we will it so.

A dream, unfulfilled, is like a haunting note of music
that will not quit.
Like the weary ripple of a stream
Caught up in drought
But continuing to look for rain.

Dreams are timeless.
Made of intangible stuff.
Each dream is one of a kind
Looking for immortality.

Dreams come in many ways.
In sleep just before awakening.
In wakefulness when a soul
has just reached up for the stars.

But however they come, do not curse a dream,
Or deny a dream, or forget a dream, for a dream is
A part of you.

Somebody once said "The biggest room in the world is the room for improvement." Make room in your life for improvement. And if you think you are already very good, look closely. You might still want to tweak a few things to make you better.

If you are trouble having trouble finding someone to believe in your dreams…start with yorself.

Just remember…a man’s reach should exceed his grasp.

Yesterday is but a vision, and tomorrow is only a dream. But today well lived makes every yesterday a dream of happiness, and every tomorrow a dream of hope.

Where there is no vision [no redemptive revelation of God], the people perish; but he who keeps the law [of God, which includes that of man]--blessed (happy, fortunate, and enviable) is he. Proverbs 29:18

A quote below from ONE A DAY blog entitled EVANGELISM – BREAKTHROUGH OR BREAKDOWN?

“Evangelism never was a great issue in the New Testament? Nowhere in its reading does one find Apostles exhorting, scolding, planning and organizing evangelistic programs.

There was no real need for a 10 Point Follow Through Program for the simple reason that a rather large number of early church members had a propensity for not shutting up.

In the Apostolic church, because so many were on fire for their faith, evangelism was somehow assumed.

It was 1948 when Gulag Irkutsk, a Christian believer in Siberia, received a 25-year sentence. After refusing to work on the Sabbath, he was ordered to stand in a 3 x 4 foot cell for 10 days with only water for nourishment.

For a year Irkutsk went through…”

When Robert Louis Stevenson was a boy he once remarked to his mother, "Momma, you can't be good without praying." "How do you know, Robert?" she asked. "Because I've tried!" he answered.

It helps when you pray to have a touch of forever in it.

To think “In the beginning” and remind yourself with awe that you are aiming at Number One in the Universe.

There was an Adam and there was an Eve and God talked with them; that one who made it so all your cells could come together to form a person called you.

Who hung the stars in their proper places in the sky. Who instigated gravity and color and...well, that should be enough to get you in the proper mood.

Speaking of creation, think about the fact that the first prayers were between God and Adam.

It was all new and bright and filled with Eden and they talked or better still God talked and Adam listened. It made perfect sense. There was a natural linkage since man is made in God's image.

It's still that way. God asking "What are you doing?" and hopefully we replying "What do you want me to do?"

Sometimes we are afraid, as was Adam. Afraid of what is happening or about some good we are not making happen.

Almost everyone wants to improve their talking to God life. If you are one of them then check in at the throne of grace.

Allow yourself to feel the power of the Holy Spirit.

Be comforted when there is tragedy. Seek the comfort of God strength when weakness comes to call. Have an ongoing relevant communication, not just a conversation, with the Creator.

How? If you would not waste the wonder of prayer, teach yourself to relax before you pray. In short, to seek quiet stillness, chew your spiritual cud so to speak. If your prayer is a disoriented scream or a confused shout you are not asking for help but rather for trouble.

Sometimes, the best thing we can do at the beginning of a prayer, in particular, if our thoughts are racing a hundred miles an hour, is to simply fall upon our knees and shut up.

Remember how the scripture reads, “Speak (Lord) for your servant is listening.” (1 Samuel 3:10 NIV) It is certainly better than mouthings from your soul that read, “Listen Lord, for your servant is speaking.”

The word "inspiration" in Greek literally means "breathed out from God." I like to describe prayer as that particular kind of inspiration we feel when our heavenly Father tingles our soul.

Prayer? When you pray you stretch your soul, you find your soul, you use your soul, you do not forget you have a soul. If you do not pray you can too easily sell your soul. It is always a matter of daily choice, the picking of God's power for man's problems or man's power for man's problems?

Cry a bucketful of tears or pray a bucketful of prayers. Give up and fall down or look up and stand tall.

Psalms 145:18 (NIV)
“The LORD is near to all who call on him, to all who call on him in truth.”

Matthew 28:1-6

“If Christ had not been raised,” says Paul, “Then our preaching is in vain, and your faith is in vain.”

In short, Jesus didn’t just talk a great game, He did a great deed. He didn’t just talk about life after death, He did it.

All the triumph that was present as He entered Jerusalem would have gone down the drain without the Resurrection. It wasn’t until the empty tomb that things went from worse to wonderful. Without it, the references to immortality are little more than a madman’s mouthings. With it, the grave becomes an open door and not a dead end street.

Feel your heart beating?

When it stops beating the message of Christ has the strength of forever in it. And what a gospel this is that promises a new life waiting, that looks at our flesh and reminds us that it is but a mortal covering for our immortal soul. “Fear not” is the call of the Masters message because the truth of eternity is there ready to come breaking through.

But dying is so final,” argue some. And I have to reply, “Final? Final to what? To money in the bank? I agree – we can’t take it with us. To a body most often grown aging and old? I agree. Or to a body withered by sickness or maimed by accident? I agree. To cars and clothes and all things physical as we know them? I agree.

But I also agree, with great joy, the heavenly underlined words of your Jesus and mine, “I am the Resurrection and the Life.”

Powerful words. Words to heal when the hurting time of death comes to call. Words that can make cemeteries cathedrals, because when you believe that the reason there was an empty tomb was because there was a risen Lord, death remains a wrenching sadness, but no longer a bitter finality.

Christ did not come only to preach a gospel, but to be a gospel.” That’s the way A. M. Ramsey put it in his book The Resurrection of Christ.

And when Jesus rose from the dead, He was the good news shouting an affirmative answer to an age-old question asked by Job, “If a man die shall he live again?” (Job 14:14) For Paul the answer was, “For me to live is Christ, and to die is gain. (Phil 1:21)

We must never forget that this life is a trip on the way to a destination. Mortality on the way to immortality. Earthly doors opening and closing and opening and closing, until one day a heavenly gate opens and we enter into a place called Forever.

“The Christian does not say, “I will never grow sick or die. I will have everything I want and be everything I desire.” No. Echoing the Psalmist words, In God I have put my trust, the believer warns, “Watch out world, I'm a giant. I can move mountains.”

The Olympic weight lifter had a problem. He could lift 499 1/2 lbs. He could lift 499 3/4 but he could not lift 500.

Then one day, his trainer decided to place more than 500 pounds on the bar but not tell him.

Not faced with the negative thought that he was being asked to do the impossible he lfited over 500 lbs. easily.

And then there was the barrier of the four minute mile.

Time and time again, top runners of the day would edge up to the mark but never break it…until one day it was broken, the impossible barrier wasn’t impossible any more and the list of runners that now ran faster than a 4 minute mile just grew and grew.

Tell yourself you can’t do something and it becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy.

Tell yourself the Christian life is impossible so it is not worth the effort and you may lead an effortless life but certainly not an inspiring one.

Rather than argue over what constitutes depression lets look at some ways to feel better rather than worse.

Constantly seek new skills. Each new challenge produces a sense of accomplishment, for we learn something even when we cannot learn everything from an experience. And yes…the quest offers less opportunity for boredom.

Success of any kind makes it more difficult for depression to settle in.

Go pull out some of your baby pictures. Look at that wide eyed innocent face, that you in your own private beginning who was so excited about everything and then consider, “Has the world become less interested or have I let myself become less interested?”

Pray about it, something like. “Lord, give me back the eyes of a child. Send me in search of that which we will save me from becoming a cynic. Don’t let me take all the fun out of a magic show or go to a circus and find I can no longer laugh when all those little people keep pouring out of that little car.

Let me still be enthralled when the lion tamer puts his head in the lion’s mouth. Or filled with wonderment by the moon moving steadily across the sky.

May I sing mightily in the shower even if I don’t really feel like it until I began to sing because now I do feel like it. Help me to find joy in simple things such as just wiggling my toes in the mud.”

My point is, fill your days full of joy and excitement over big things, little things and in-between-things…rather than end up with no thing.

Don’t be daunted when I write fill your days full of joy. Start out small by trying to fill only five or ten minutes with pleasant thoughts or good and decent deeds. Then work up from there. Idleness really is the Devil’s workshop and if you work there often enough, you will be depressed.

There is no easy fix. We are all different. Some see life through rose colored glasses and others are just constantly misplacing them. Chasing new avenues to give yourself new outlooks is better than just reruns.

Therefore, another thought. Apply the solace of silliness. Silly thoughts such as popping popcorn without the lid on…or…making a list of things to do that you have already done…or…reading the dictionary upside down and then looking for hidden meanings.

This kind of thinking is obviously no solution but it is band-aid and remember band-aids do have their place in the healing of a wound. A friend of mine, when she was dying of congestive heart failure was so busy helping another friend who was dying of cancer she always said, “I just don’t have the time to worry and think about myself.”

Death, divorce, the lost of a friend because of an argument that got out of hand. It happens. But when it does, think on these words by C. K. Chesterton, “If seeds in the black earth can turn into such beautiful roses, what might the heart of man become in its long journey toward the stars.”

Sometimes, when life has been unkind we are like a seed – surrounded by darkness. It is then we are truly challenged to grow toward the light.

Legend has it that this story was told by John, who as you know was named the Beloved Disciple.

It is about a little child whose dog has died.

What is important is not the source but how it emphasizes the gentle but powerful loving nature of our Lord.

“The small boy sat weeping for his dog lay dead beside him.

At that moment the Master reached down, lifted the little one in His arms and began to speak to him of how animals live in a different way from men and are therefore able to see what few humans can ever see.

Looking up into the face of this kind man from Judea the child seemed entranced.

Then Jesus placed within the tiny hand of the little boy a small shell that He had found on the shore that morning and had been carrying in his tunic.

It was then He explained how the small creature that had lived within this house had now left it.

The little boy stared at the shell and listened as he was told how a small shell can house a living creature who one day departs but does not die.

And because little ones have such a nearness to heaven and understanding that is sometimes lost in growing maturity he understood.

And he smiled and Jesus smiled and while he was still saddened he accepted that change is an ongoing part of the plans of God.

"For the LORD is good; His lovingkindness is everlasting And His faithfulness to all generations." Psalm 100:5

GO GROW AND GLOW (Being who you were meant to be)

Call it the reward of persistent slowness.

Travel to Japan and study the ancient art, which they call “Bonsai.” This taking plants of the forest and stunting their growth until they become miniature duplicates of the real thing.

Giant pines, huge oaks, trees that would otherwise tower into the sky, are restrained until their growth is measured in inches.

It is a very tedious process that is implemented by thinning the roots, nipping the buds, and containing the growth within a given space.

And yes, in this world, for centuries now, man has practiced an ancient ritual, which can be called “Spiritual bonsai.”

It is the practice of taking man, made in the image of God, made to image God, and stunting his spiritual growth until he becomes a miniature of what he might otherwise have become.

It is a very tedious process that is implemented by thinning the roots of prayer, nipping the buds of faith and containing the growth within a given space.

What comes from some such pruning is a miniature of what might have been.

How can each of us avoid this spiritual shrinkage? By accepting with gusto the fact that man was made to grow or as Fredrick Ruckert put it “

In every man there lives an image, of what he ought to be, (and) as long he is not that image, he ne’er at rest will be…”

John Newton. Not what he might have been but what he actually did become.

This vagabond, deserter from the British navy, soldier of fortune, slave trader, but finally one day when he became a spiritual giant and wrote, “Amazing Grace, how sweet the sound, that saved a wretch like me. I once was lost, but now am found. Was blind, but now I see.”

It isn’t easy. The great preacher Dwight L. Moody explained, “I have more trouble with Dwight L. Moody than any other man I know.”

It isn’t easy. To quote the Apostle Paul, “The good which I would do, I do not, but the evil which I would not do, that I do…”

And yes…we both know that the world is filled with John Newton’s and Dwight L Moody’s and those with the love of the Lord and his ways such as was found in that ancient biblical giant…those who decided to GO, GROW AND GLOW.

Mother Theresa, Joan of Arc, Mary Lou Retton…

The Lord is not out to stunt our growth. He’s got better things to do. He didn’t hang on a cross to save us from our sins, so that he could then help us think up more ways to have more sins to save us from.

Man was made to grow. If you are now not growing it’s both a stupidity and a sin.

A stupidity because you should know better.

A sin because you should do better.

And finally a foolishness because “You will not pass this way again.”

The poet, philosopher preacher Psalmist got it right when he penned some guidelines that began, “Be like a tree planted by the rivers of water.” (Psalm 103) and “Grow like a cedar of Lebanon.” (Psalm 92:12)

FROM DREAMS TO DEEDS…never let your hopes shrivel and die.

*********************************

They had built their tents upon the land that surrounded Rome. They were the Gauls and they would win over Rome. But all the time…in Rome…they were buying and selling the land the Gauls were encamped upon.

And the final victor was Rome…for they never let hope die.

Part of a poem from the Sanscrit reads, “….today, well lived, makes every yesterday a dream of happiness and every tomorrow a vision of hope.”

“It can’t be done,” laments a man; and buries his dreams, forgets the power of his God, lets his talents go to waste and his life go to nothing.

And yet another person says, “Maybe it can’t be done, but I’ll never know without trying.”

And so by faith and hope Nobel prize winner, Jane Adams, began Hull House in Chicago, and Albert Schweitzer moved into the wilderness of Africa, and a person in reading this says “I can change” and is changing as they say it.

What is hope?

It is a thirsty land crying out for rain,
A candle in the act of being kindled,
A drop of water in quest of an ocean;
A voice in the night calling for help,
A soul standing in awe before the mystery of the universe.
It is time flowing into eternity,
A man climbing the altar stairs to God.
- Dwight Bradley

What is hope? It is man’s best looking for a place to happen. It is anyone who prays the kind of prayers that causes he or she to become excited by elevated thoughts.

Deeply immersed in meditation and prayer during a church service, the Italian poet Dante Alighieri failed to kneel at the appropriate moment.

His enemies hurried to the bishop and demanded that Dante be punished for his sacrilege.

Dante defended himself by saying, "If those who accuse me had had their eyes and minds on God, as I had, they too would have failed to notice events around them, and they most certainly would not have noticed what I was doing or not doing."

In both 1 Chronicles 16:29 and Psalms 29:2 we have this exhortation, "Give unto the LORD the glory due unto his name: bring an offering, and come before him: worship the LORD in the beauty of holiness."

"As a hart longs for the flowing streams, so longs my soul for thee, O God. My soul thirsts for God, for the living God" (Ps. 42:1,2).

Enter his gates with thanksgiving and his courts with praise! Give thanks to him, and bless his name!" (Ps. 100:4).

Worship is what we do when we don’t feel we have to but truly want to.

The foundation for worship should be a sense of wonder.

When worship is fed by enough love and awe it is pure delight.

True worship helps you to behave yourself.

WATCH OUT MOUNTAIN

There are over 600 stories and commentaries on this blog that began Nov 24, 2009. It is added to daily.

***************************************

A man named William Lloyd Garrison looked at slavery and grew ill. “There’s nothing you can do about it,” he was told.

But this man with hopes and dreams sold all he had to buy paper and ink to publish a paper called The Liberator.

Once, he was dragged through the streets of Boston on a halter. His friends deserted him. It would seem He was fighting a lost cause.

But today, in Boston, as a reminder of the slavery he helped to abolish, there stands his statue and on this monument his words of undying commitment to a cause: My country is the world, my countrymen are mankind. I am in earnest; I will not equivocate, I will not excuse. I will not retreat a single step, and I will be heard.

There are so many who have a dream or destiny that speaks to them and they pass these opportunities by.

These deeds or destinies need not be large. They can be no more than saying a friendly good morning to a homeless man on the way to work. They may be infinitely larger on the scale as you take the time to tell your wife or husband you love them or pause to truly listen to your child who is trying to tell you what they did in their day.

You mountain may be a molehill or it may truly be a mountain. You may be called to make a moral choice that will lose you your job but earn you kudos in the task of being a decent God fearing human being.

You may be called to give up your selfish ways if they have overwhelmed you and someone in your family chain will see it and be moved by it…and several generations down an act of generosity will move the world…you never know.

God willing you will not…faced with God’s commandment and your knowledge that you should do whatever it is you are chosing not to do…pass an opportunity by. God willing you will not fall victim to the mantra…”I can’t” or “I won’t.” We all have but when it happens it is not a day that is good.

In the daily battle to win out over procrastination or not be paralyzed by paranoia or whatever stops you from moving a mountain…may the Lord infuse you with that special strength that lies waiting for your prayerful call.

I am your brother and you are my Christian brothers and sisters and we share the common weaknesses of being human and the uncommon offer of the special grace of God.

May we seek it…and find it…and share it…

Remember Joshua, successor to Moses, survivor of forty years of wandering in the wilderness. Weary and worried, more than willing to forget the whole thing, but God sitting him up straight with the words, Be strong and courageous. Do not be terrified; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go. (Joshua 1:9)

“I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” (Phillipians 4:13) Paul said it and I agree. It’s a top-notch statement that deserves a first class approval rating. Paul and that tiny band of men who thought they’d convert the world believed it. Just think how it might have been if they had thought small and done nothing at all.

This kind of spiritual strength lets us be what we could never achieve on our own. Lets us live with the crude, the cruel, and the crass and still believe in the ultimate decency of man.

Lets us look at the mutilation caused by sick fanatics and say, “Thank you, God, that there is more to creation than the body.” A strength that lets me preach funerals and say with certitude, “Into Thy hands, Lord, we commend this immortal soul.”

That keeps me preaching and believing that men and women can change, and sinners can be saved, and wounds can be healed. It keeps my chin up and my prayers steady.

The Christian does not say, “I will never grow sick or die. I will have everything I want and be everything I desire.”

No.

Echoing the Psalmist words, In God I have put my trust, the believer warns, “Watch out world, I'm a giant. I can move mountains."

Put enough faith and hope in a human spirit and not just mountains, but even mountain ranges get moved.

Philippians 4:13 "I can do all things through him who strengthens me.

YOU CALLED THEM STUPID…NOW EVERYONE FEELS BETTER?

Stupid/dumb (the Bible uses the word foolish) comes easily to all of us…so before we call someone stupid perhaps we should consider some of the FOOLISH things folk have done in the Bible…they had been given good advice……and still they passed intelligent behavior by.

Remember?

How Adam knew better but went out and ate the fruit anyway.
And Sampson made the decision to tell Delilah the secret of his strength.

And Lot’s wife just had to look back at Sodom and Gommorah and turned into a pillar of salt.

And Peter, who believed in loyalty but let himself be ruled by fear and denied his Lord when he had said over and over again that he wouldn’t.

So…

The last time someone did something really stupid, knew better but did worse.

Did you have an overwhelming desire to let them know how stupid you really thought it was?

Perhaps even share their personal moment of stupidity with others so that everyone could laugh at their expense?

Why?

Why is it too often a human trait to spray paint other human beings with plain ole meanness?

Why can’t we just shut up?

Be quiet?

If they know they were stupid they certainly don’t need to be reminded…unless it is done in such manner it becomes counseling (and how often is that?)

If for some reason their stupidity escaped them will your bringing it up make it all better? Or again is it really just an opportunity to be feel better at another person’s expense.

Unless you can be assured your revelation to the person and the world will be beneficial; cool it, be nice, be a sunbeam, let your conscience speak loud enough so you will hear it…any of the above.

Just remember that insults if they are given any life at all should be written on sand before an ongoing tide…and when you give a compliment or utter a praise carve it on stone.

Colossians 3:17
And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.

ARGUMENTS

It was a great moment when a large statue of Christ was erected high in the Andes on the border between Argentina and Chile. Called the “Christ of the Andes” the statue symbolized a pledge between the two countries that as long as the statue stood, there would be peace between these two countries.

However, the human spirit is not always open to the ways of peace and argument stands always ready to enter any arrangement.

Soon, the Chileans began to complain that they had been slighted…the statue had its back turned to Chile.

Just when tempers were truly getting out of hand a Chilean newspaperman saved the day.
In an editorial he suggested
that the people of Argentina needed more watching over than the Chileans.

Sometimes all that is need to defuse a situation is a sense of humor.

But whatever is needed…so many arguments are so very foolish and simply add to the number of enlivened fools lining up to earn their place in line…

Be …I say to you…and I say to me…consider what it is we argue about and why and when and then decide that it is most often a terrible waste of time and effort and common sense.

If you are in the middle of an ongoing argument? If you opponent will not do…then you do it…leave an opening where he or she can gracefully escape while saving face….and yes…in the process getting that frown off both of your faces.

Or consider the following poetic thought

A horse can't pull while kicking.
This fact we merely mention.
And he can't kick while pulling,
Which is our chief contention.
Let's imitate the good old horse
And lead a life that's fitting;
Just pull an honest load, and then
There'll be no time for kicking.
Annonymous

MILLIONS AREN’T ENOUGH?

I know some people who have millions in savings but are still poverty stricken. They worry morning, noon and night about their money. To extend my statement I will simply tell the following tale.

She died in 1916 and she had lived in poverty.

She consumed cold oatmeal for breakfast because it cost extra to heat it.

Her son’s leg became infected but she would not get it treated because she could not find a clinic that would take care of him for free.

His leg had to be amputated.

When she finally died, she died from a heart attack after arguing over the value of drinking skim milk.

And when she died, she had over $100 million dollars in the bank.

The battle between need and greed is never ending…and yes…it has been said more than once that one of the gates that leads to hell has a great large G on it’s richly decorated entrance.

And worst of all is the affect on the children who grow up in such a household.

There is an old Serbian Proverb that speaks to this danger, “A greedy father has thieves for children.”

Prov 30:8-9 “Give me neither poverty nor riches, but give me only my daily bread. Otherwise, I may have too much and disown you and say, "Who is the Lord?" Or I may become poor and steal, and so dishonor the name of my God.”

Be a postage stamp. Decide where you want to go and stick to it.

The nice thing about apathy is that you don’t have to go out of the way to prove you’re sincere about it.

Are you a bumper sticker person? You know the person who wants everyone to know how you feel but you don’t really want to get involved.

When a person is late for a date or an appointment they are a thief…for they are stealing the other person’s time.

There is a bad habit and we all have it…to one degree or the other.

And what is it? The telling of tales…and in so doing like any good novelist embellishing the tale..
He said “You are cheap.” What he really said was, “*(Your name) is thrifty.” Or “She said your dress is the ugliest dress he’d ever seen.” What she really said was “It certainly is different?”

Obviously, this kind of retelling of a tale should never happen. It is mean spirited and should have been dropped, buried and forgotten and not continued with a new life. But sometimes what is shared is innocuous enough but still gets added to until it is no longer innocuous.

We’ve all played that game where perhaps a dozen people sat in a circle and the first person makes a statement to the second person who passes it on to the third…and so on…if you have played the game you know that by the time it has gone only half way around the circle the statement is beginning to bear little resemblance to what was originally said.

It isn’t that we human beings lie on purpose. It is that our memories are faulty and we have a tendency to enliven a quote too often in a negative direction.

So if such a barrage of telling gets back to you. Think positive. Decide that whatever was said was said in jest or out of weariness…and that same person may well have said some nice things about you as well..

In short, stop tenderizing your feelings while at the same time turning that chip on your shoulder into a log jam. I doubt there is a person alive who hasn’t had someone make a dumb statement about them that the person wishes they hadn’t said it.

And remember, when you hold on to anger it is like holding on to a hot coal that just keeps burning and burning and burning some more.

If you are determined to believe that someone really did meant to insult you and did a good job of it do not diminish your own being by growing angry at them. Pity them. Pray for them. Forgive them. But if they were a fool for saying something mean you are the greater fool if you let it just keep eating up your insides.

I have had people say bad things about me and I still greet them with a pleasant “Hello.” Perhaps they are still saying bad things about me. Perhaps they aren’t. But that is their problem. I don’t need to make it mine.

“How much more grievous are the consequences of anger than the causes of it” wrote Marcus Aurelius.

VALENTINE’S DAY, HOW IT ALL GOT STARTED

The gteatest gift a parent can give their children is for those two children to see two adults daily treating each other with love and respect.

Two hundred and fifty years plus after the birth of Jesus, Emperor Claudius was totally committed to rebuilding the once-great Roman army.

He however believed that it was important for men to volunteer rather than be drafted.

The problem was that most men preferred to stay at home with their wives and children than go off into battle.

Claudius came to the conclusion that only way to solve this problem was to officially declare marriage illegal…so he issued an edict banning all further marriages. It earned him (ALONG WITH OTHER THINGS) the not too endearing nickname of Claudius the Cruel.

Meanwhile, there was a priest by the name of Valentine who thought the edict ridiculous. Indeed, one of the favorite times of his priesthood was the performing of marriage ceremonies.

So he simply just went on performing these ceremonies in secret.

He would whisper the vows so no one could hear them through an open window and so he could hear any approaching soldiers come to arrest him.

But one night his luck ran out.

The couple he had been marrying escaped but he was captured and thrown into jail.

Now, many of the young couples he had married came to visit him in jail.

They tossed flowers and notes up to and through the barred window to his cell.

It was their affirmation of the love he had protected and proclaimed, the marriages the emperors had wanted stopped.

One day the daughter of one of the prison guards came to visit. Her father allowed the two to visit and talk for hours.

She believed the had done the right thing by ignoring the Emperor’s decree.

On the day Valentine was due to die, he left her a note thanking her for her friendship and loyalty.

He signed it, “Love from Valentine.”

And so the custom of sending Valentines began.

And the day he died and sent his “Love from Valentine” note.
