HOW TO BETTER HANDLE A BROKEN HIP AND OTHER SUCH CRISIES

(This is longer than a normal One A Day but I hope you will stick with it and read it in it's entirety for I believe you may well find some helpful hints therein)

I have crashed a hang glider and thereby lived with a paralyzed arm for awhile.

I have had a kidney and tumor removed and by such accidents and other planned surgical events I know the pain caused by such events.

But each time I have met the problem with positicve thinking,a sense of humor and a sense of God.

And by so doing my heavenly Father has rewarded me with "the peace that passeth understanding."

Being human I have during these times experienced some anxiety but the great physician has quickly taken over and taken me to an emotional level I could never have achieved all by myself.

Each time one of these assaults have taken place on my body I have done the following.

I have reminded myself of the benefits that will come out of this.  It will sharpen my empathy curve.  So that when I visit a friend in the hospital I can truly better understnad and therefore more deeply care.

And buy a book on meditation.  It’ll help you to get more out of your Bible and put muscles on your prayers,

If your injury or surgery makes you bed ridden or less than mobile...with this extra tme besides random reading, pick out a subject you’ve always wanted to know more about and become a mini expert.  With Google there is no limit to how smart you can become on anything in a relative short period of time.

Pull out those pictures boxes filled with pictures that you have always planned on putting in order.  It’ll be fun and you can then look back on your time of pain as constructive as well as the initial destructive.

If you’re right-handed, teach yourself to write with your left hand.  It’s a talent that may come in handy some day.

Have a yard sale.  Great way to meet new people and get you out of the house and perk up your income.

Handwrite some thank you notes to those who did something nice for you years ago.  Yes, I’m not talking about all the people who have been caring during your present crisis.  Just catch up on all past missed opportunities.

Look up Bible verses on the Internet.  Some have beautiful pictures and music to go along with them.

When you fall and break your hip it is instantaneous.  I did not play the “why me?” game.  I have always been a proponent of the “Why not?” attitude.

Almost immediately I started working on a high math score, “I started counting my blessings.”  I realize that many of you readers will shake your head and think “Really?”  Well, think it all you will.  When a pain or problem is about to overwhelm you such positive thinking is worth its weight in gold.  And if you can’t say it and immediately mean it “Say it anyway.”  In short order, if you keep repeating it, you will have lived long enough to start attracting a good sized list.

Some people get angry at themselves.  “How could I have been so stupid?  Why didn’t I look where I was going?”  I had the same thought and then reminded myself that to avoid accidents I would have had to be perfect.  I gave that up a long time ago because if I achieved this impossibility it would make people nervous.

Matthew 7:24-27

whosoever heareth these sayings of Mine an doeth them,

I will liken unto a wise man, which built his house upon a rock.

And everyone that heareth these sayings of Mine and doeth them not,

shall be likened unto a foolish man, which built his house upon the sand.

When storms blow in from the east and take over south Florida’s weather, they may seldom actually huff and puff with enough force to blow our houses down, but during such rampaging assaults some houses along the coastline may end up collapsing into the sea and cause other house owners deep worry that theirs may not be far behind.

       Life is like that.

High winds of anxiety whip at our dreams.

An accident puts us on crutches, or we walk with a cane, or we must use a wheelchair.

One day we find we don’t see as well as once we did, or we miss half the words aimed in our direction.

A death unravels our sense of security.

We lose a job, or watch others around us lose theirs and wonder if we will be next.

Want to get the house called you properly prepared for the inevitable?

Then get a top-notch contractor named Jesus to coordinate your decisions.

And do it on a regular basis.

Check out the Bible…it is filled with first rate building plans.

            Want your roof anchored properly.

Check out the patriarchs, the 10 Commandments and the laws of love set down by your Master and mine.

Proverbs 8:17 “I love those who love me, and those who seek me

Bill McCartney retired as the head coach of the Colorado football team several years ago.

His reason for retirement was not because he was unsuccessful as a coach. His teams had won the national championship. They had been in the top 10 many times.

McCartney said that he was retiring because he wanted to reevaluate his priorities.

He said, “I’m leaving coaching, & I’m going to take a whole year to re-evaluate my priorities.

Is God first?

Is my family second? Is my work third?”

And when that year was over, Bill McCartney had dedicated his life & talents to Christ, & threw his efforts into founding the great men’s renewal gatherings that we know today as “Promise Keepers.”

Someone once said, “A trip of a thousand miles begins with the first step.”

And this is the way men find God.

The first prayer, the first verse of Scripture that has meaning, the first moment of conviction, the fist time Christ becomes more than a name and instead becomes a living incarnation.

To begin to have any understanding of the greatness of God in eternity, you have to take the first step in time.

Each day you take a step, toward Christ or away.  Each day you make a decision, for Christ or not.  Each day you become a little better or you become no better at all.

HOW TO RUN AWAY FROM A SHADOW

In this Christmas season give yourself the gift of a better more contented YOU.

There is an old Swedish proverb that reads, “Worry gives small things a big shadow.”  One thing is for sure, it can make the skin itch, the heart miss a beat and make us feel like we are carrying around an emotional elephant.  Fear is no fun.

So what can we do to lessen if not completely erase the problem?

          Be honest.

Make a good habit of telling the truth.  Having to remember perfectly tomorrow the lie told today can cause great fear and ongoing anxiety.

Treat others with kindness and love.  Love casts out fear.

Work consistently and persistently at getting rid of bad habits.  There is great fear in knowing that tomorrow we will make the same dumb mistake that we habitually just made today.

Never say “never can, never will” when it comes to conquering your fears.  If you say it, it can and may well become a self-full-filling prophecy.

Wear a smile more often than a frown.  It is scary to look in the mirror each morning and see an anxiety ridden person that scares you to death.

If you are angry too often and too long, stop blaming other people for being angry.

You are the one who lets yourself get angry and stay angry.  You are the one who has put fear in those around you because of your anger.

Therefore, yes, be afraid of anger because you know it is no friend to you, no friend at all.  Shakespeare put it well, “The fault is not in the stars but in ourselves.”

Fifty people over the age of ninety were asked “If you had it do over again what would you do differently?”

There were many answers but two responses seemed to stand out from all the others.

I would reflect more about what I was doing and why I was doing it and if it was worth doing in the first place.

I would risk more.  The number of opportunities passed up by each person in a lifetime is saddening.

The fear of failure stops many before they even take a first step toward an opportunity.

          What a terrible waste.

We live in a land of the free and the brave.  We must not let fear become our king.

BLACK FRIDAY INDEED

It was Black Friday across Americ in the year 2011...and there was violence across the land.  And 2000 years ago,
Wisemen, very wise men, traveled from afar bringing gifts rather than seeking them.
And while giving to loved ones in this Christmas season is a good and blessed thing…it is not good when a Christmas carol, "Let there be peace on Earth" is drowned out by a vast chorus singing "Me!  Me!  Me!  I’m first!  I’m first!  I’m first!"

Violence of over a $2.00 waffle iron?
What can you do to stop such nonsense?

Well, you cannot change everyone overnight.

And some, NEVER!

But you can change an attitude here and another attitude there, and thereby change some actions.

You can pass these on thoughts by email to friends with your own private personal thoughts... and you can be patient yourself with that overworked salesclerk.

You can be the kind of person who makes other people feel better just because you are not condemnatory or rude in thought and deed.

You can be a gift that keeps on giving.

You can work at finding and bringing back to your heart and soul and the world around you what once you had when you were still a child.

You can remember the message that God is love and Christ is the package that proves it.

And what is love?  Well, out of the mouths of babes, and particularly if they are only four years old, come some interesting insights.

Love is that first feeling you have before all the bad stuff gets in the way.”

Love is my grandpa painting my grandma’s toenails because she has arthritis and can’t bend over to do it herself.”
Love is when you go out to eat and somebody gives you most of their French Fries without making you give them any of yours.”

Love is what makes you smile even when you are tired and don’t feel like smiling.”
Love is when a puppy licks your face even though you have gone all day without paying any attention to him.”

Love is when you know your name is safe in some ones mouth.”

Love is when somebody learns something bad about you and loves you anyway.”
Love is what is in the room Christmas morning, if you stop opening your presents for just a minute or two and just listen.”

You can remind yourself and others that...

Some say love is a river that drowns the tender reed.

Some say love is the razor that leaves our soul to bleed.

Some say love is a hunger, an aching endless need.

I say love is a flower and you and I, its only seeds

It was one star among many stars
                                     And so wondrous that star
                                              It seemed alive.
And though you can no longer see it
As on that night I think
It still moves across the sky
                                          Strange and bright.
                                 Pointing toward love and light.

Argue against what happened...make it a topic of conversation wherever you go...someone will be there who acted in the violent ways described...and hopefully they are ashamed...or someone will hear the conversation they will not act that way in the future...
WE OWE IT TO EACH OTHER TO SPEAK OUT FOR WHAT IS RIGHT AND GOOD AND MAKES THE WORLD A BETTER PLACE TO LIVE...AND GREED...ACTIVE NEGATIVE GREED IS NOT THE WAY.
