I recently read the perfect quote on what I am talking about in a book called SPIRITUAL DEPRESSION, IT’S CAUSE AND ITS CURE.
“The main art in the matter of spiritual living is to know how to handle yourself. You have to take yourself in hand, you have to address yourself, preach to yourself, and question yourself.”
In other words, you must say to your soul, “Why art thou cast down? What business have you to be disquieted? You must turn on yourself, upbraid yourself… exhort yourself, and say to yourself, ‘Hope thou in God.’ ”
When you awoke this morning, I have no doubt you awoke talking to yourself. But perhaps all of what you were hearing wasn’t particularly good for your being. Nor all your thoughts good for your soul. “Thoughts are not arrows haphazardly shot out into the cosmos. They are boomerangs.” (quote from The Gift by Richard Paul Evans)
And if we are not careful, maybe it was destructive talking and thinking …the kind no one should start a day with…so talk back. Have an Operation Talk-Back session, being positive when negative thoughts threaten to overwhelm.
I have a short prayer I sometimes pray, “Dear Lord, I have been having negative thoughts. Please make it so they don’t end up having me.”
But just listening to yourself in a monologue session isn’t a good idea.
Talk scripture to yourself. Ignore the lies and excuses yourself are always willing to tell you.
Talk what you know is truth to yourself. If
you are force feeding yourself with those promises of God you know and
believe, you cannot so easily escape these affirmations.
Do not let them rust from disuse.
Do not let them be lost because it has been so long since you brought them out you have forgotten where you stored them.
They are positive, eternal promises and they are designed to make it easier to handle the negatives that are bound to come.
In short, don’t let your soul go on vacation.
Life is a sacrament and you don’t take a vacation from a sacrament.
