His name was Edward Gibbons.  He was an invalid who could only go to school for a few months out of a year.  He was in a constant state of recovery and weakness was his daily bread.  For 23 years he worked on a book.

The name of the book was THE RISE AND FALL OF THE ROMAN EMPIRE.

When he finally finished it he wrote the following, “It is the night of the 27th of June, 1887 and I have just written the last line concerning the rise and fall of the city of Rome.”

He certainly is remembered for this monumental work but he is just as well remembered as a man who started something and did not quit until he finished it.

How is your staying power recently?

The world if full of those with dreams that are giants and deeds that are midgets.

They dream of being a candle burning bright to fill the night with light…

And then they hardly make it to being a match that briefly burst into incandescent and then rapidly fades away.

The famous artist-philosopher, John Ruskin, once used an interesting experiment to cull the vitally interested from the mildly curious.

He was to begin a lecture course on a certain Tuesday and on the said night in question when a rather large crowd arrived there was a notice on the door which read, “Meeting postponed, it will be held next week at the same time.” The next week about half the number showed up and there was an identical notice tacked to the door.”  One more week went by with the same notice.

Finally, he stood in the doorway before a very small group of people and said, “I think the class is sufficiently culled and winnowed to get down to work.”

Persevere.  Never give up.  Never quit.  Beat out adversity with stick-to-itiveness and you will be one in a million…but what you have proved and improved on in spirit will be priceless.

“…we also rejoice in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance;)perseverance, character; and character, hope”  Romans 5:,4,3

A  Quote FROM Rev. Wyrick’s 9TH BOOK “THE SPIRITUAL ABRAHAM LINCOLN”

During the days of his youth, this gentle giant did dally with Deism, but it must also be remembered that with passing years, spiritual wisdom took over.  An ongoing controversy argues, he was not a Christian because he was never baptized or joined a church.  It seems only fair to let his own words defend him against any who would doubt his faith.  In 1846, with typical honesty he said what was and what wasn’t.   “That I am not a member of any Christian church is true, but I have never denied the truth of the Scriptures, and I have never spoken with intentional disrespect of religion in general, or of any denomination of Christians in particular…”

It was not that he did not believe in Christ.  He said he would gladly join any church that would not overwhelm him with dogma.  So, it was not a cry against Christianity, but a cry against Christians who, with determined zeal, had split up into over three hundred recognized denominations.

Though six foot four and weighing one hundred eighty-four pounds,

Abraham Lincoln was never too big for his long-legged britches.  He was not overly impressed with himself, always impressed by the works of the Almighty.

In his growing up he knew little of the thin two hundred square mile strip of civilization hugging the eastern coast.  He would, of course, live and die there one day, this man who would travel so far from the wilderness to Washington.

Would travel, but never alone, for his was a soul attuned to heaven.

P.S.  He was readying to join the church on the immediate Sunday after he was assassinated.
