Edward Day, minister and author of the book “An autobiography of Prayer” told this story.
“Ten years ago, a beloved physician and friend told me that I had a heart block and that my heart was greatly enlarged. His conclusions were the results of a careful examination by himself and experts with the aid of the electrocardiograph and other reliable tests. His warning was “slow down.” Two years later, the examinations, diagnosis and prescriptions were the same.
“However, the prescription could no longer be taken because of adverse reactions.
What seemed to me to be the clear call of God took me into labors that were even more grueling than those from which I had been warned: sixteen to eighteen hours a day, journeying up and down the land bearing almost intolerable burdens in the effort to reach un-awakened masses with the message of the Lord. Keeping schedules that would exhaust much younger men; walking the streets at night or sitting in hotel lobbies in lieu of unavailable hotel rooms, carrying two men’s work, contending with opposition and indifference and misunderstandings that were heart-breaking.
“From the viewpoint of medical science, it was reckless folly. But God had called and was still calling. What else could I do? Here, however is the surprising thing. Recent tests, of the most thorough kind, electrocardiograph, heart heliograph, etc., all by a highly competent physician and by specialists whom he had enlisted, revealed there is no sign of heart block and the heart is perfectly normal in size.
“Do you wonder at my belief, ‘It is of God.
Why do we pray? We pray because we are human and because our greatest moments of intelligence are no more than a wisp of wind before the Omniscience of God.
We pray because we have many more questions than answers and therefore it seems to make sense to go to the source rather than act like a source.
We pray because Jesus told us to and when it comes to Jesus, we try to do what we have been told.
We pray because we learned a long time ago that prayer can save a life.
In more ways than one.
