Several years ago some
scientist got downright scientific about prayer.
They weren’t necessarily trying to prove that prayer works. The fact of the matter was that several mightily hoped that their double blind study would prove it didn’t.
At any rate, at the Mid America Heart Institute in Kansas City, all cardiac patients admitted were sorted into two groups.
There were 990 patients in the test and for 28 days half were prayed for and half were not prayed for as they tested the effectiveness of intercessory prayer. The patients did not know that the test was even being conducted. The staff did not know.
The 75 people doing the praying, whose only qualification was that they believed in God and that He is responsive to prayers for healing made on behalf of the sick, did not know the patients.
And then the results came in.Those prayed for had fared 11% better than those not prayed for.
The double blind study had proved that intercessory prayer is an effective part of treatment for the ill. Reluctantly all the doctor agreed, but for some it was just too much to draw a natural conclusion from the results.
Almost petulantly the study reads that some of the doctors were not prepared to conclude that the obvious conclusion “proved the existence of God.”
