At Cornell University a number of years ago, an experiment was conducted with interesting and significant consequences.

Two doctors named Little and Hart tied a piece of wire around the leg of a normal sheep in the midst of other sheep.

Then at regular intervals they would cause the leg to twitch by sending an electric shock through it.

The sheep’s behavior remained normal. He ate well, slept well, acted quite nicely; twitching appendage and all.

Then the scientisst did something else. They began to ring a bell 10 second before they administered the shock.

To alternate the irritation sometimes they would ring the bell and not administer the shock.

Within a very short period of time the sheep began to show a definite anxiety neurosis. His eating habits went from bad to worse.

He took to avoiding contact with other sheep. He became highly nervous and agitated.

In short, the experimental sheep began to be a living example of what will happen if someone, be it sheep or shepherd, lives in constant expectation of the worse…but not sure “if” or “when” IT is going to happen.

And this is you and meet and all our fellowmen. And some earn their PHD in worry. A new day comes and some meet the new day with comments such as, “This is going to be a terrible day, I know it. I just feel it.” “We’ve planned a picnic and I know it is going to rain.” “The children are going to be a terror today.”

And I remember reading of a woman who was so afraid of germs she washed her hands hundreds of times a day with strong disinfectant.

Then there was the man in Philadelphia who starved to death in a house with no food in the kitchen but $300,000 stuffed in a mattress. He had been terribly afraid of dying old and broke.

And pray and handle their fears and for others their fears handle them.

And some feel the hand of their God in their own hand.

And some wander often in the midst of some universal truths…and learn from them…and live life with more victories of the spirit than defeat.

Many of us crucify ourselves between two thieves - regret for the past and fear of the future.”

That the greatest fears we have are the fears we need to face head on rather than run from them. Never let your fear grow bigger than your faith. For yes I have said it before and I say it again,
courage is not the absence of fear but the mastery of it.Fear is a darkroom where negatives develop.
So learn from the stars…all around them is darkness but they never notice…they are too busy making light.

Ultimately we know deeply that
the other side of every fear is freedom.
Or the old sailor of several centuries ago who when asked why he continued to go to sea in those unsafe wooded ships replied “A ship is safe in harbor, but that's not what ships are for.”

“Fear not, for I am with you;
be not dismayed, for I am your God;
I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.
For I, the LORD your God,
hold your right hand;
it is I who say to you, “Fear not,
I am the one who helps you.”
—Isaiah 41:10,13
