JUST AN ORDINARY INSECT

He was just an ordinary insect, but seeing that bright star in the sky caused him to pay close attention to the excitement of the shepherds as they proclaimed what they had seen.

And then came the Wisemen, and what they shared between themselves made even more of an impact on the insignificant little creature.

“I must take some gift to the Christ Child, as well, “ he thought to himself, “but what?”

The only thing he could think of was a small kernel of corn he had hidden for some day when he would need it. It was his one great treasure for he had nothing else. “I will give this to the Christ Child,” he said.

And so he began to push and shove and every once in a while even lift the little kernel of corn over some obstacle along the way.

The stable seemed a million miles away. But finally he crossed the threshold and after great effort pushed his precious treasure into the infant’s hand.

Jesus smiled, reached out and touched him, and as he did, the little worm was filled with such a warmth, like nothing he had never known before.

And then it happened. He began to glow, and the glow grew brighter and brighter still. And so it is that glowworms have been glowing every since.

It is what being touched by Christ is all about. When it happens, you get a glow on. And as Christmas gifts come and go, who could ask for anything more?
