COME ON, COME ON TO MY HOUSE (A Day After Christmas Story)

I don’t remember when first I heard this story or the church in which it happened, but it was Christmas Pageant time and the costumes of Mary and Joseph, the shepherds and Wisemen, and the Inn Keeper consisted of bathrobes with a few other pieces of cloth.

As to rehearsal, it would have helped if there had been a few more hours of effort. Because of this, or simply because the farmer was far more comfortable with his cows than standing in front of friends and family portraying the Inn Keeper, everything was rapidly going from bad to worse.

He had already tripped going up the stairs and knocked over one of the flood lights.

Now, as Mary and Joseph came down the aisle, he realized he had completely forgotten what it was he was supposed to say.

When they had completed their journey and stood before him, he froze. The silence extended. There was a nervous cough from the audience and then a few more. Perspiration began to flow down his forehead. Still he remained mute, staring straight ahead, uttering not a word.

Finally he remembered and blurted out, “There is no room in the Inn…” But he wasn’t through.

The old farmer, playing the Inn Keeper now had an inspiration. Now he shouted at the top of his lungs, “There is no room in the Inn…BUT HE CAN STAY AT MY HOUSE.”

Ah, yes, Lord, you can stay at our houses anytime you want.

You, who have forgiven us when we have been naughty and certainly not been displeased with us when we have been nice.

You, who came into this world not to berate us but to save us. You, who died on a cross to give us the gift of eternal life. Oh, yes, Lord, you can stay in our homes anytime you want.
