I’ve never figured out quite why people make fun of New Year’s resolutions. What is wrong with an improvement program? Even if it only lasts 24 hours?
What is wrong with tripping and falling on your face if for at least a little while you really were concerned with a balanced life?
What is wrong with accepting God’s forgiveness and then letting the power of the Holy Spirit help you to learn from past mistakes?
It is certainly better than no resolutions at all. It is certainly better than giving up and giving in.
"...let us not grow weary while doing good, for in due season we shall reap if we do not lose heart." Galatians 6:9

THE GUMPTION OF SUPER GIVING

Did you know that the man who started Domino’s Pizza and became worth hundreds of millions of dollars, and owned the Detroit Tigers, one day sold it all and gave the money to missions. When asked why, he simply replied, “None of my GETTING ever gave me as much satisfaction and contentment as this GIVING.”
Think not on how much you give but on all that is left after you give. Call it monetary excellence with a spiritual streak. Call it getting your priorities straight. Call it opportunity rather than obligation.
Someone has written, “giving is not a way of raising money but a way of raising men.”
There are two very important reasons for giving:
The law… God commands it.
Love…gratitude demands it.
Give because God loves you and you love Him. Give because the Bible really doesn’t enshrine miserhood. Give because you are filled with such gratitude for all your blessings you cannot allow yourself to do anything else.
Let each one [give] as he has made up his own mind and purposed in his heart, not reluctantly or sorrowfully or under compulsion, for God loves (He takes pleasure in, prizes above other things, and is unwilling to abandon or to do without) a cheerful (joyous, "prompt to do it") giver [whose heart is in his giving]. 2 Corinthians 9: 7

As a pilot, I took up many people for their first flight, so the following story got my attention.
A husband and wife were at a country fair where a pilot was giving rides in an old, open cockpit bi-plane. He was charging $10 per person. $20 seemed a little steep so a man and his wife got busy trying to negotiate an improvement in pricing.
“How about $10 for the both of us if we squeeze together in that tiny cockpit behind you? This way you’ll only have to make one flight.”
The pilot paused a moment and then made a counter offer, “I’ll tell you what. I’ll still charge you $20, but if you don’t say one word during the flight, I’ll give you your money back.”
They readily agreed, and during the flight the pilot put the plane through its paces. Loops and power stalls and spins. Even flying upside down. During the entire time he never heard a sound, so when they finally landed he was more than ready to keep his part of the bargain. As they were taxing in he shouted back to the husband, “Congratulations, you’ll get your $20 back, you didn’t say a word.”
To which the man replied, “Yep, you’re right. But you almost got me when my wife fell out.”
What we do or don’t do, say or don’t say really does come down to what our value system is, doesn’t it?
We’ll call her Janet. “Pastor,” she said as she stood in the church parlor, almost pouting, “We want to go on the church retreat this weekend, but we can’t. $25.00 is more than we can afford. We’re not poor, but neither are we rich. We can’t afford it.” And then just for emphasis, she repeated herself, “We just can’t afford it.”
“No problem,” said the pastor, “we’ll forget the $25.00. You and your family feel free to attend at absolutely no cost.”
Later that day, as destiny is sometimes served, as the pastor walked through the door of the local convenience store to pay for his gas he saw Janet putting down $25.00 for a handful of lottery tickets.
What we do or don’t do, say or don’t say really does come down to what our value system is, doesn’t it?
Jesus said, "Be thou faithful unto death, and I will give thee a crown of life" (Rev 2:10).

HE COULD HAVE KILLED HIM BUT HE DIDN'T

Dwight L. Moody was one of the world’s greatest evangelists but he couldn’t carry a tune two inches without it crashing to earth in flames.
Then he met Ira D. Sankey, a man with a golden voice and a golden faith. It was a match made in evangelistic heaven and for years this team spread the word of the Lord across the land.
But it almost didn’t happen. The story behind the story is as follows:
One Christmas Eve, a few years after the Civil War, Ira D. Sankey was traveling by steamboat up the Delaware River. Knowing who he was, the other travelers asked him to sing.
When he had finished singing “The Shepherd’s Song” a man with a rough and rugged face came up to Mr. Sankey and asked “Did you ever serve in the Union Army?”
“Yes, I did,” came back the reply.
“Can you remember if you were doing picket duty on a bright moonlit night in 1862?”
“Yes,” answered Mr. Sankey, very much surprised.
“So was I,” said the stranger, “but I was serving in the Confederate Army. When I saw you standing across the river, I raised my musket, took careful aim and was prepared to shoot you dead.
I was standing in the shadows and you in the full light of the moon. It wasn’t very far. I couldn't have missed, but as my finger began to tighten on the trigger you lifted your head to the heavens and softly began to sing.
Immediately I recognized the song. It was one my God-fearing mother had sung to me many times. The song you sang then was the song you just sang now. ‘We are thine, do thou befriend us, Be the guardian of our way.” When you finished your song I knew I could not kill you. My arm of its own accord dropped limp at my side.

WHAT DOES YOUR DREAM FACTORY PRODUCE?

A man named William Lloyd Garrison looked at slavery and grew ill. “There’s nothing you can do about it,” he was told. But this man with hopes and dreams sold all he had to buy paper and ink to publish a paper called The Liberator.
Once, he was dragged through the streets of Boston on a halter. His friends deserted him. It would seem He was fighting a lost cause.
But today, in Boston, as a reminder of the slavery he helped to abolish, there stands his statue and on this monument his words of undying commitment to a cause: My country is the world, my countrymen are mankind. I am in earnest; I will not equivocate, I will not excuse. I will not retreat a single step, and I will be heard.
Know this, your prayers are no better than your hopes; your deeds no better than your dreams. And they must all be guided by God, otherwise you may hope the wrong hopes and dream the wrong dreams.
Part of a poem from the Sanscrit reads, “….today, well lived, makes every yesterday a dream of happiness and every tomorrow a vision of hope.”
“… The Lord {is} my helper, and I will not fear what man shall do unto me.” (Hebrews 13:6 KJV)

I don’t remember when first I heard this story or the church in which it happened, but it was Christmas Pageant time and the costumes of Mary and Joseph, the shepherds and Wisemen, and the Inn Keeper consisted of bathrobes with a few other pieces of cloth.
As to rehearsal, it would have helped if there had been a few more hours of effort. Because of this, or simply because the farmer was far more comfortable with his cows than standing in front of friends and family portraying the Inn Keeper, everything was rapidly going from bad to worse.
He had already tripped going up the stairs and knocked over one of the flood lights.
Now, as Mary and Joseph came down the aisle, he realized he had completely forgotten what it was he was supposed to say.
When they had completed their journey and stood before him, he froze. The silence extended. There was a nervous cough from the audience and then a few more. Perspiration began to flow down his forehead. Still he remained mute, staring straight ahead, uttering not a word.
Finally he remembered and blurted out, “There is no room in the Inn…” But he wasn’t through.
The old farmer, playing the Inn Keeper now had an inspiration. Now he shouted at the top of his lungs, “There is no room in the Inn…BUT HE CAN STAY AT MY HOUSE.”
Ah, yes, Lord, you can stay at our houses anytime you want.
You, who have forgiven us when we have been naughty and certainly not been displeased with us when we have been nice.
You, who came into this world not to berate us but to save us. You, who died on a cross to give us the gift of eternal life. Oh, yes, Lord, you can stay in our homes anytime you want.

JUST AN ORDINARY INSECT

He was just an ordinary insect, but seeing that bright star in the sky caused him to pay close attention to the excitement of the shepherds as they proclaimed what they had seen.
And then came the Wisemen, and what they shared between themselves made even more of an impact on the insignificant little creature.
“I must take some gift to the Christ Child, as well, “ he thought to himself, “but what?”
The only thing he could think of was a small kernel of corn he had hidden for some day when he would need it. It was his one great treasure for he had nothing else. “I will give this to the Christ Child,” he said.
And so he began to push and shove and every once in a while even lift the little kernel of corn over some obstacle along the way.
The stable seemed a million miles away. But finally he crossed the threshold and after great effort pushed his precious treasure into the infant’s hand.
Jesus smiled, reached out and touched him, and as he did, the little worm was filled with such a warmth, like nothing he had never known before.
And then it happened. He began to glow, and the glow grew brighter and brighter still. And so it is that glowworms have been glowing every since.
It is what being touched by Christ is all about. When it happens, you get a glow on. And as Christmas gifts come and go, who could ask for anything more?

A SAVIOR SPECIAL

Once upon a time, eternity came to call. It was certainly no heavenly afterthought.
If you are God you don’t send your Son down to earth without considerable consideration. Short, sweet and to the point, it was a planned event and had been for quite sometime.
Nor did it just suddenly happen with everyone unaware.
Centuries before, a prophet named Malachai spoke the words, “Behold, He is coming.” Malachi repeated this message from God like any good prophet is supposed to do. And he kept on prophesying that one day God’s beloved and only begotten Son would show up on earth.
A once in a lifetime experience. Not a Santa moment. Rather a Savior Special.
And so to those who knew the prophecy, the birth of Christ was just a follow-through from eternity.
An on-the-site announcement by angels. A mystic star overwhelming the Judean sky.
This newly born Jesus would sweep away the fear of death. This little child, now sleeping so close to His mothers cheek, would become Master and be followed by countless millions yet unborn.
And since it was all wrapped up in the timelessness of God all kind of future events would be affected.
And, if we would but pay more attention to the message from the Prince of Peace what a difference it would make in our lives and in world events.

ARE YOU WRITING HAPPINESS WITH FADING INK?

Archbishop Desmond Tutu of Africa summed it up so very well. What this grand and glorious promise of Christianity is all about. Remember, he personally experienced the abundant evils of apartheid and yet still he was able to write, “Goodness is stronger than evil; love is stronger than hate; light is stronger than darkness; life is stronger than death, victory is ours through Him who loves us.”
It is the manger message that will not, should not ever go away. It is why there are so many today looking for spiritual answers because all the technology in the world is still writing so much of their happiness with fading ink.
And why is there such solace when we find the Savior and give ourselves to Him? Well, because “The Lord travels in all directions at once. Wherever we are, we find that God has just departed. Wherever we go, we find God has just arrived before us.”

SEEDS FOR SALE

A woman was wandering through a marketplace when she came upon a sign that stopped her in her tracks. It read God’s Fruit Stand. Without hesitation she rushed over and began to exclaim, “I would like a perfect banana, a perfect cantaloupe, a perfect strawberry and a perfect peach.” It was then she recognized who was behind the counter, God. And looking at her with a heavenly smile, He simply replied, “I’m sorry but I only sell seeds.”
That is the hope given to us on the first Christmas, when God come to earth in the form of a little child.
Hope with a capital H named Jesus.
Eternity with a halo.
That through Christ, men and women would take God’s seeds and make peace more often than war; offer tolerance more often than prejudice; give joy more often than sorrow.
Take these seeds of greatness that are within us all and make good things rather than bad things happen.
Make the world a little better than a little worse. Never perfect, never that…but at least getting things aimed in the right direction, certainly in the direction of love for…
Some say love is a river that drowns the tender reed.
Some say love is the razor that leaves our soul to bleed.
Some say love is a hunger, an aching endless need.
I say love is a flower and you and I,
its only seeds.

CHRISTMAS IS A CROSSROAD

Christmas is a crossroad where the Fatherhood of God and the brotherhood of man meet. It is you lighting candles of faith in a world of darkness. It is you when you are more concerned with giving than getting.
Christmas is too good to be restrained within one 24 hour period. It is a tiny golden curl clipped from a tousled head, put in a jewel box and given with a note that reads, “I made this for you myself.” Christmas is a little boy giving blood to save his sister and then asking, “Doctor, when will I die?” Having believed he was not just giving some of his blood but rather all of his blood.
Christmas is where “Love thy neighbor as thyself” is taken to a new level.

EVERYONE IS CHASING SOMETHING

Christmas is bigger than any calendar. Ever hear of Larimer Mellon? He was 37 years old and a millionaire. He had enough money to buy Bethlehem, let alone visit it.
Instead, he was visited.
Reading about Albert Schweitzer and his 365-day-Christmas-spirit in Africa, he relinquished his life of cut-ups, cocktails and cuties, then went back to school to study medicine. With his M.D., at age 44 went to Haiti to spend his fortune and his life among its poverty and its people.
He spoke Christmas fluently because he lived the spirit of Christmas until it was a living breathing reality.
Deuteronomy 6:5 Love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength.

Sometimes life is a time of lights and sometimes a time of flights, and we get so confused. And then we look up and see a Christmas star and the Christ it promised is standing by our side. When that happens, we are not confused at all…or afraid. Because at that time, we can almost hear Him saying, “Merry Christmas! And to all a good night.. and a good day…and an even better forever.”

BE THE 4TH WISEMAN

You know, when I was about 11 years old I finally got my first electric train. It had taken four years of Mom and Dad saving for it because it was depression time and little boys didn’t always get what they wanted when they wanted it. Oh, it was a great little train. It ran around in circles going toot-toot-toot like little trains are supposed to do. And then another Christmas I got a football suit. And then very early on… I got a Christ. I have no idea where my train set is or my football suit, but I know where my Christ is.
And Christ gently, quietly, lovingly stands by our Christmas tree and says, “Come, take my gift again…and again…and again, for I offer you My love not only on Christmas Day. I offer it your whole life long.”
Sometimes I think I hear Him saying to me, “There were three Wisemen and, Neil, I want you to be the 4th. I want you to wisely follow My star. I want you to use My wisdom to sweep away your times of darkness. I want you to use the power of the Holy Spirit when you are lonely, or angry or afraid. Be a wise man, Neil. Be a keeper of My gift of love.
And yes, I believe He is saying the same thing to you. “Be a wise man or wise woman. Charlotte, Charles, Grace, Simone, Louis - whatever is your name - join Neil on an eternal journey to the manger, to the cross and finally to the Throne of Grace itself.”
We are so much alike despite our affinity for finding our differences. We are so much alike and so much in need of the Christmas spirit and all it stands for.

MORE ON "DO YOU SPEAK CHRISTMAS?"

It was 10 years ago, but I remember it like it was yesterday. He sat there before me and his 74 year old shoulders sagged with the memory of that awful Christmas morn so many years ago. Then he told his story. “I had received a new pair of pants for Christmas. It was the depression and that was not an every day occurrence. While visiting a friend I tore them on the fender of his father’s car. I can still hear my mother screaming at me. I can still remember the rest of Christmas day raking leaves in the backyard as my punishment. It wasn’t the first Christmas she had ruined. It wouldn’t be the last. Mother believed in Christ and she believed in his teachings but she didn’t speak Christmas.”
Tears rolled down his cheeks and I thought to myself, She knew the words but she couldn’t sing the tune. When you go to sleep Christmas Eve, let the last word that lingers on your lips be JESUS. And next morn as you awaken let the word JESUS be the first to escape. Before you ever get out of bed, with your eyes still closed and your being coming alive, pray something like the following, “Dear Lord, I love my family so very much. Let me show it. Let me not ruin this Christmas day, and God forbid it be worded, “Let me not ruin another Christmas.” May they never have to say, “I guess dad loves us, I guess mom loves us, but it sure would be nice if they acted like it a little more often.” Pray a dozen times, if that’s what it takes, “Lord, on this Christmas day let me speak Christmas without ceasing. Let me practice a loving patience that is beyond duty… that is beyond compare.”

A LANGUAGE CALLED LOVE

On Christmas morn, there will be mothers and fathers who will not speak Christmas. They will yell at their children for being too excited and loud… and then they will yell a little more and maybe louder. There will be husbands and wives who will be jealous when they find out what some other husband or wife received, and then they will pout and ruin the day for themselves and all around them.
I have studied French, Spanish, Greek, Latin and Hebrew but I am not very comfortable with these languages these days. I am badly out of practice. It has been years since I have really spoken or read them with any regularity. When I think, I think in English. On Christmas morn, there will be mothers and fathers who will not speak Christmas. They will yell at their children for being too excited and loud… and then they will yell a little more and maybe louder. There will be husbands and wives who will be jealous when they find out what some other husband or wife received, and then they will pout and ruin the day for themselves and all around them.
I have studied French, Spanish, Greek, Latin and Hebrew but I am not very comfortable with these languages these days. I am badly out of practice. It has been years since I have really spoken or read them with any regularity. When I think, I think in English. GOD'S OLD FOOL

It is a true story – there are many like it. Not long ago he was a punk and he hated his parole officer. A parole officer who spoke fluent Christmas. Without being asked, the young hood volunteered how he felt about this officer of the law. “He’s an old fool. Always talking about love and me changing my way of life…and some odd ball named Jesus. No way Jose. No way.”
But the old fool, God’s fool, the odd ball parole officer was kind to the young man. Met impatience with patience - just kept speaking Christmas - just wouldn’t stop. And when you hear a language often enough you begin to understand it.
And so he beat down the young man’s anger with love. And one day the young delinquent became bilingual, too, and today he speaks fluent Christmas.

ARE YOU BILINGUAL? DO YOU SPEAK CHRISTMAS?

When your memories speak to you in this Holy Season what do they tell you of Christmas’ past? Jolly old St. Nick on the mantle piece? Stockings hung with care? The Nutcracker Suite in the background? A tree sparkling with lights above a manger scene passed down from one generation to the next?
Or, do you remember family members all tired and short tempered? Frazzled from trying to do too much, having spent too much? Not bilingual. Not speaking Christmas at all. And it doesn’t really make any difference whether or not you speak English or Spanish or Portuguese in your household, but it does make a great deal of difference if you don’t speak Christmas.
The Word became flesh and dwelt among us…(John 1:14)

Everyone thinks at one time or the other, “What will it be like when I stand before God and all my yesterdays are played out before me?”
Well, I prefer to update that thought and daily remind myself I am always standing before God.
That He is always with me and observing me and, if I give Him half a chance, leading me. The fact that I am, is His gift to me. And how I hone and sharpen this gift of me, is my gift to Him.
Which takes us right back to the seeds of opportunity God offers each of us

HAVE YOU GONE BLIND OR IT THAT YOU JUST HAVEN'T OPENED YOUR EYES?

Back in the days before mechanism took over, mules were used to pull the coal cars through the mines.
On Sundays, the one day of the week that the miners did not work, the mules were brought up into the light. If they were left in darkness for too long they would go blind, their eyes no longer able to discern the light.
Some people are so afflicted.
They choose eternal darkness and eventually go completely blind.
Blind to the light of the Holy Spirit. Blind to the healing hand of the Master Physician. They do not believe as did David when he wrote, “The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? The Lord is the stronghold of my life; of whom shall I be afraid.” (Psalm 27:1) And so they are terribly, miserably, overwhelmingly blind.
How does that old hymn go?
Abide with me, fast falls the eventide.
The darkness deepens; Lord with me abide.
When other helpers fail and comforts flee,
Help of the helpless, oh abide with me.
Who wrote these words?
An old preacher in the year 1847. For years he had ministered to sailors, many of whom sailed forth to be swallowed up in raging storms.
And now, old, tired and having preached his last sermon, he asked a final favor of his Jesus, “Give me one last blessing. Give me the ability to write a hymn that will provide comfort to the survivors of these men lost at sea.”
This is you and I, survivors on the sea of life. We all have felt losses; been swallowed up sometimes by evil; been unable to endure the storms of temptations; beat down by drugs or depression, or loss of dignity, or mean thoughts.
And so we pray to the God-sent Nazarene who journeyed down from heaven to benevolently save us from ourselves.
To help us gain empathy from our pain.
To help us realize that life is not always something to be enjoyed but a lesson to be learned.
In short, sometimes we must learn to hang by our fingertips till the Lord helps us find a place to put our feet.
Daniel Boone once said, “I never was lost, but I was once powerful confused for three whole days.” Do you want to cut down on your confusions? Then remember who you are and act like it. A child of God – glory in it! A little lower than the angels – believe it! Loved by Jesus who heals because we so often need His healing – depend upon it!

Remember Roger Stauback, the great quarterback for the Dallas Cowboys in the 70’s?
You might think that he would consider those days of old were his glory days. But he doesn’t.
He has long believed that his future reached far beyond football. That Christianity is the most important thing in his life. That with God one can withstand anything life offers. Roger‘s football feats and awards were great and yet he has never been confused as to what awards really count - God’s awards.
Good old positive thinker Paul put it well, “We are hard pressed on every side, but not crushed; perplexed, but not in despair; persecuted, but not abandoned; struck down, but not destroyed.” (2nd Corinthians 4:8-9)

He has long believed that his future reached far beyond football. That Christianity is the most important thing in his life. That with God one can withstand anything life offers. Roger‘s football feats and awards were great and yet he has never been confused as to what awards really count - God’s awards.
Good old positive thinker Paul put it well, “We are hard pressed on every side, but not crushed; perplexed, but not in despair; persecuted, but not abandoned; struck down, but not destroyed.” (2nd Corinthians 4:8-9)

DON'T LOSE YOUR PRAYER WHILE PRAYING?

A mother and son were having lunch together in a restaurant. When the food had been served the mother said, “Let’s have a silent prayer.”
When finished she saw that her son’s head still was bowed - and remained that way for a long time.
Finally he opened his eyes and began to eat. “What were you praying about all that time?” asked the mother. “How do I know?” replied the son. “It was a silent prayer.”
When we pray, we must not do that – be so absentminded and apathetic that a few minutes later we don’t have a clue what we just prayed. Rather, be concerned with totally committed prayers, not mouthing,
Oops, I let my mind go wandering again.
Pray with an intensity that underlines every word that is heaven bound. Nor when we pray, be satisfied with a bunt. Go for a home run. Pray mountain prayers – not molehill mutterings.

DON'T PUT OFF UNTIL TOMORROW WHAT YOU CAN PUT OFF UNTIL THE DAY AFTER

One early morn a new army recruit had slept right through the bugle call so that when his drill sergeant found him, he was still fast asleep.
“Soldier! It’s 4:30 A.M.! What do you think you are doing? Rise and shine!”
“4:30?” moaned the half awake soldier, “Sergeant, you’d better go back to bed. We have a big day ahead of us tomorrow.”
Is that how you face the promises you have made for we all have made and make them. Thinking something like, “Lord, not right now, it’s too soon. But tomorrow, Lord, we have a big day ahead of us.”
It is so easy to earn a spiritual Ph.D. in procrastination. Saving the biggest and best prayers for some unknown tomorrow when you are actually going to take this whole faith thing more seriously.
Commit your way to the LORD, trust also in Him, and He shall bring it to pass. (Psalm 37: 5)

AN IDENTITY CRISIS?

When Charles Wesley came to America as a missionary he didn’t succeed too well.
Chief Tomo Chichi one day told him why.
The old Indian, after patiently listening to Charles, finally interrupted with these words, “Christians steal. Christians beat men. Christians keep slaves. Why me want to be Christian?”
One thing is for sure, the world is watching.
Which reminds me of a man who one day said to me, “I have never met a Christian. I have met Presbyterians and Methodists and Baptists, but I have never met a Christian.”
It can be argued he hadn’t tried very hard or that he suffered from spiritual blindness, but nevertheless, this was his conclusion. And his conclusion did not lead him to Christ.
If a runner says he is a runner and does not run, one begins to harbor doubts if he is seriously a runner.
If one claims to be an artist but paints no pictures one begins to doubt he or she is an artist.
If a Christian claims Christ but acts like the devil it does set the world to wondering.
Such a power we have to influence those around us. Such a responsibly. And when in the midst of our imperfection we manage a moment of inspiration, what a truly great moment that is.

Every year I live I am more convinced that the waste of life lies in the love we have not given, the powers we have not used, the selfish prudence that will risk nothing, and which shirking pain, misses happiness as well. DO YOU MAJOR IN DREAMS OR DEEDS?

One of Aesops fables speaks to this. It tells of a dying father who gathers his sons around his deathbed and says “I am dying so I will tell you a secret. In my vineyard there lies a hidden treasure. Dig and you will find it.”
After the funeral, they take spade and shovel to the ground. Excavating, turning the soil over and over again in their search. And to their disappointment they find nothing. Except that the ground, now tilled so much better than usual, produces a bumper crop such as they have never seen before.
Life is like that, isn’t it? Tilling the soil of opportunity is hard work. Because making a life rather than excuses does, in the final analysis, ask one simple question.
Did I major in dreams rather than deeds?
What does my name stand for in the community where I grew up?
“Go to the ant, thou sluggard; consider her ways, and be wise: Which having no guide, overseer, or ruler, Provideth her meat in the summer, and gathereth her food in the harvest.” (Proverbs 6:6-8)

THE FOUNTAIN OF YOUTH

A long time ago I was told of a quaint little Quaker lady who was complimented on her youthful appearance and then asked how she had achieved it.
She replied , “I use my lips for truth, my voice for prayer, my hands for charity, and my heart for love.”
It seems advice worth following for what counts in this dynamic called life, the mighty minutes between our personal Genesis and Exodus, is not how big or small is our personal destiny, but how hard we try to get it right.
This is to my Father's glory, that you bear much fruit, showing yourselves to be my disciples. (John 15:8)

Almost twenty years ago, there began a saga that might well be entitled “Where Oh where has my garbage gone?”
It was the year 1986. And for the next 16 years, 15,000 tons of incinerated garbage would travel the world looking for someone who would take it. It all started out in what seemed would be a normal journey.
A trip to the Bahamas where the captain expected the trash would be dumped. It didn’t happen that way. The Bahamian government decided to accept no more boat loads of other countries rubbish.
From that point on it became a comedy of errors - a kind of living parable that really would have stunk, if the garbage had not been incinerated.
The itinerary of the trash began to read like a world wide cruise. Puerto Rico, Bermuda, the Dominican Republic, Honduras, Guinea-Bissau, Haiti, Senegal, Cape Verge, Yugoslavia, Sri Lanka, Indonesia, the Philippines, Singapore, the barge sailed on. Nobody wanted it.
Finally it ended up where it had all started, in a landfill just outside of Philadelphia. Actually, it was all quite just. In the end, we all have to eventually deal with our own garbage. We can’t just ship it away.
Guilt is garbage. And as long as we keep it, it stinks up our lives and the lives of those who have to live with us. But if we ask for, and then accept, God’s forgiveness for whatever sins we have committed, it is garbage out time.
Jesus said, "Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing." (Luke 23:34)

GARBAGE IN! GARBAGE OUT!

In the 1880’s, two families in Kentucky, the Hatfield’s and the McCoy’s, were at war with each other. Historians can’t quite agree as to exactly what started the feud, though the fact that the McCoy’s had sympathized with the North and the Hatfield’s with the Confederacy certainly didn’t soothe the pile of vengeance. But all agree that over 100 men, women and children died because of it.
Then a miracle of forgiveness happened. In May of 1976, Jim McCoy and Willis Hatfield, the last two survivors of the original feuding families, shook hands at a monument dedicated to the last six victims of almost a century of vengeance.
That was good, but even better than good was the fact that when Jim McCoy died eight years later at the age of 99, his family chose the Hatfield Funeral Home to make the final arrangements.
When his heart had stopped beating, it was a forgiving heart. It had been a miserable time between these two families but now all the hate and anger had come to an end and it was good. Garbage in. Garbage out.
When your heart stops beating, will it be a forgiving heart? Or is there someone you cannot, have not, will not forgive for whatever it was they did or did not do, or something you just imagined? The question usually is, “Do you still hold a grudge?” I think that is the wrong way to put it. I think rather the question should read, “Does a grudge still hold you?”
For if you forgive others their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you, but if you do not forgive others their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.(Matthew 6:14-15)

DON'T BE A MUDDIER

Seventy years ago, when Fiorello La Guardia was Mayor of New York City, he was always doing creative and unusual things. Anyone who knows anything about him probably remembers that during a newspaper strike he started reading the funnies over the radio to the children on Sunday mornings.
However, few know of how one night he visited a night court in the poorest ward of the city, relieved the judge of his duties and took over the bench for the evening.
As case after case came before him, he administered the kind of justice that only one with his inventive mind could come up with.
Finally, toward the end of the session, a grandmother appeared before him who had been arrested for stealing bread to feed her grandchildren. La Guardia looked down at her, shook his head and said, “You are guilty and you know I have got to punish you.” She shook her head in agreement.
He then fined her ten dollars, or ten days in jail, but that was just the beginning.
He promptly reached in his pocket and threw a ten dollar bill into his hat which had been on the floor beside him.
He then fined everybody in the courtroom for living in a city where grandmothers had to steal bread to feed their grandchildren.
Then he passed his hat around to collect whatever each person could afford. The grandmother left the courthouse that evening not only with her fine completely paid but with an extra $47.50 in her pocketbook.
Some people try to clean up the muddiness of selfishness and others just contribute even more to the mess. And it is a question we need to often ask of ourselves – which are we?
“The generous person will be prosperous, and he who waters will himself be watered.” (Proverbs 11:25)

ARE YOU A WIGGLER?

It was the time of Noah and he and God had had a talk, an agreement really. But at the moment it was a promise that was not being fulfilled.
God is speaking, “Noah, where is the ark which I commanded you to build?”
And Noah with confidence explains, “Well, you see, Lord, it’s like this. Three of my carpenters have called in sick. And besides that, the gopher wood supplier has really let me down. It’s on order but I can’t get any action over there in the lumber yard.
Some of my subcontractors have gone bankrupt and the price of pitch has gone up tremendously ever since the suppliers found out about my great need.” Noah paused for breath for only a moment.
He felt he was making a good case and he didn’t want to lose his momentum. “All the unions have gone on strike. They know they have me in a bind. Even my three sons Shem, Ham and Japheth spend more time arguing than working.”
Suddenly, the Lord interrupts him. “What about the animals, the male and female of every species that I ordered to be brought aboard.”
Noah answers with less confidence now, “They were delivered to the wrong address. I am assured someone is working on it night and day. Lord, I really am trying, but you know how it is.”
And the voice of the Lord rumbles as He replies, “Noah, my son, I do know how it is. Why else do you think I am causing a flood to descend upon the earth.” (rewrite of story by an anonymous writer)
The Bible is filled with folk who make excuses where there really is no excuse.
Remember Jesus and his excuse parable? He tells of how a great dinner was to be given but then excuses from those invited to attend began to pour in.
The first excuse, “I have bought a piece of land and I must go out and see it. Please accept my regrets.”
Another excuse; “I have bought five yoke of oxen. I am going to try them out so I cannot attend. Please accept my apologies.”
And yet another, “I have just been married and therefore I cannot come.”
No matter whether it is in Biblical times or in our 21st century, the point of the matter is, one excuse is NOT as good as another when you or I fail to do what we know we are supposed to.
Oh yes, we know the truth well…The human tendency is to try to wiggle out.
“I’m sorry.” “I was wrong”. A very large number of people can’t say these words. Don’t say these words. Unfortunately never will say these words.
So each time we make an excuse when we should be busy making a better life, it behooves all of us to remember that the eyes of heaven are upon us.
And when we, therefore, let our lives become garbage dumps of rationalizations, I think God may weep, for He knows what we could be. , And perhaps momentarily some angelic voices sing off key.
"Repent! And turn from all your transgressions, so iniquity will not be your ruin. Ezekiel 18:30-32

HOW DOES YOUR CREDIT REPORT READ?

A man went to a party and had too much to drink. First he made a fool of himself. Then he passed out. The next morning he felt terribly contrite and asked his wife to forgive him. She said she understood and would “forgive and forget.” But then as time went by, months actually, she continually referred to the incident. After awhile he got tired of hearing about it and complained, “I thought you said you were going to forgive and forget?”
“I have forgiven and forgotten,” was her reply, “but I just don’t want you to forget that I have forgiven and forgotten.”
We do that. We want to perpetually have our name on a credit report. Continually receive credit for being nice or we won’t be nice anymore. Thank goodness God doesn’t work that way. We repent. He redeems. End of story.
"Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ, God forgave you." (Ephesians 4:32)

We do that. We want to perpetually have our name on a credit report. Continually receive credit for being nice or we won’t be nice anymore. Thank goodness God doesn’t work that way. We repent. He redeems. End of story.
