like we thought, spoke with the same opinion as our own, were indeed carbon
copies of ourselves.
Really?
Well,
are you mad at someone right now at this very minute because they dare to have
a different political opinion or about the educational system or how children should
be raised...
Are you a raised raw spot on the constant alert for
sources of irritation?
We do that. Speak up
for freedom of speech and then too often do not allow it in our own households
or our own circle of friends or anywhere really.
It is not that we
have never heard of the generational gap... that is a old as time itself.
It
is not that most of us have not changed our opinions on a host of things as we
have grown older. Or never heard the
words...
"When I became a child I put away childish things
but when I became a man I put away childish things..."
Still
childlike and childish we stubbornly say by word or body posture or deed,
"How dare you disagree with me. I
am always right and you are always wrong."
Well, maybe not that strongly...but certainly not in a listening mood.
What a wonderfully different world we would
live in if the following five thoughts were put to practice.
These
five are “You did a good job.”
The four most important words are, “What
is your opinion?”
The three most important words are,
“Let’s work together”
The two most important words are, “Thank
you” and the single most important word is, “We.”
That family member or friend or stranger who has
some different ideas. Are they all wrong
or partially wrong or are you both right on some things and wrong on some
things and both of you might do well to change your thinking or at least
respect each other's difference of thinking.
Anger does
indeed shut off the lamp of the mind and guarantee darkness...and darkness just
makes for a lot of collisions.
"Eat at __________Restaurant. 50,000 flies can't be wrong." Someone had carved the message into a table
just inside the front door. And reading it
I remembered the following quote, "Every man has a right to his
opinion, but no man has a right to be wrong in his facts." Bernard M. Baruch (1870
- 1965)
By way of example...the
truths?...that go out on
Twitter and Facebook and the Internet and emails and....
Are you a member of the porcupine prickly set at church? Theological differences do exist even in the
same church and they are not always handled as Christians should handle them.
"I
love you but I think you are an idiot.
And actually at this moment I'm having trouble loving you at all." Ever disagreed with someone and as you
disagree...was that what you were thinking?
Emotions do play their part and not that good a
part...now don't they?
Where should we compromise and where not? In our heart of hearts we all know the answer
to each of those kind of questions.
...or
agree to disagree...is it really that hard?
Solve problems by committee.
Church members do that all the time...or by email...anything but face to
face or knee to knee.
That's right the next time you can't get along
with a fellow Christian start your discussion on your knees and stay there
until you solve your differences.
Which
would last the longest? Your knees or
your argument?
It
might hasten agreement...now might it not?
Pride and peace mix just about like oil and water.
A hand of fellowship.
A fist. And both are made with
the same five fingers.
Ah
and Proverbs speaks again, "Proverbs 26:21 “ As charcoal is to burning coals, and wood to
fire, So is a contentious man to kindle strife.”
“In the late l800s there were just two
deacons in a small Baptist church in Mayfield County, Kentucky. One Sunday, one
of the deacons placed a small wooden peg on the back wall so the minister could
have a place to hang his hat,
. When the second deacon discovered the
peg, he was outraged that he had not been consulted.
Before long, the church took sides and
eventually split. To this day, the story goes, you can find in Mayfield County,
Kentucky, the Anti-peg Baptist Church.”
No comment.
When good men
disagree. That's what I'm talking
bout...because that person you disagree
with is most likely as good as you are, as sincere in their differing opinions
and quite possibly have some good points they have made in trying to prove
their point.
But did you listen? Not necessarily
change your mind but actually listen...chew on the thoughts they shared and
tried them out for digestion...or did you just automatically build your wall
higher and thicker and more impenetrable?
Would the
world have gotten anywhere if all we had done all these centuries was refuse,
one to the other, to ever agree?
