Someone once wrote, “People live by
encouragement. Without it they die. Slowly... Sadly... Bitterly."
Do you major
in encouragement or in tearing people down?
Do you nag folk and family about their weaknesses or praise them for
their strengths?
When you
enter a room does everyone cringe because they know you have an ever ready list
of the faults of everyone and anyone? Or
do they cheer because you are a bright beam of sunshine...one of those gracious
gifts of God who see the good in people...even in some people where something good
is hard to find.
Pure and simple.
Are you and encourager or a discourager?
One of the
saddest things I have seen, in my minsitry, and more than once, is people
destroying themselves while destroying others.
Some of my happiest moments have been in watching those special angel
folk who take a special joy in pointing out the praise points of those they
call family, friends or even strangers.
It is not
easy to think positive thoughts about negative people but if you don't... and
spread those thoughts... then who will?
Yes...in the
worst of us there is some best...it may be no more than a sliver of goodness
but find that sliver and maybe even try to fatten it up.
The effect of encouragement is awesome.
It can change the direction of a person's life.
We all need
encouragement. We all want
encouragement. A leader may be seated in
a position of power but that does not mean he still does not need to know
someone cares enough to praise whatever he or she is doing.
The Duke of Wellington, the British
military leader who defeated Napoleon at Waterloo, was not an easy man to serve
under.
He was brilliant, demanding, and not one
to shower his subordinates with compliments.
Yet even Wellington realized that his
methods left something to be desired.
In
his old age a young lady asked him what, if anything, he would do differently
if he had his life to live over again. Wellington thought for a moment, then
replied. "I'd give more praise." How well do you know that person you may have just
spoken badly about? Do you know just
enough to not know how little your know about them? That thorn in their side which is literally a
physical ailment or an ongoing family tragedy that has them on the edge of
exhaustion on a regular basis.
Would they be
a different kind of person if there were less tension in their lives? Would
they be a different kind of person if word got back to them that you had been
saying good things about them?
One morning a
man opened the door to get his newspaper and was surprised to see a strange
little dog with his paper in his mouth. Delighted
with this unexpected "delivery service," he fed him some goodies
The following morning he was horrified
to see the same dog sitting in front of his door, wagging his tail, surrounded
by eight newspapers.
He spent the rest of that morning
returning the papers to their owners.
Encouragement does produce results...no one can argue
with that statement.
Are you a
part of creative exchanges or destructive exchanges? A warm handshake or the back of your
hand? An encouraging word with a smile
or a downer statement with no smile at all.
Are you the equivalent of a spiritual emotional cup of
coffee that perks people up or a spiritual emotional sleeping pill that dulls
any initiative they might otherwise have had?
Have you ever wondered why CANADIAN GEESE
fly only in the" V" formation?
For years specialists in aerodynamics
wondered the same thing. Two engineers calibrated in a wind tunnel what happens
in such a “V” formation.
Each goose, in flapping his wings,
creates an upward lift for the goose that follows. When all the geese do their
part in the "V" formation, the whole flock has a 71% greater flying
range than if each bird flew alone.
Togetherness
for an uplift. All some people need to improve their lives is for
someone to help them prime the pump. Caring concerned compassionate
togetherness.
Everyone needs recognition for his
accomplishments, but few people make the need known quite as clearly as the
little boy who said to his father: "Let's play darts. I'll throw and you
say 'Wonderful!'"
Do that to and far someone...shout some
"wonderful" in their lives.
Give them that special joy that only encouragement can give. Be Santa Claus with the gift of praise
wrapped up and delivered on a regular basis on any month of the year or day of
the week.
And who knows....someone may busy right now wrapping up a
gift of encouragement for you as well.
