How many
people are you envious of? A few. a
lot. None.
In the raising of your children or your influence on your
grandchildren, do you recommend it?
Why not?
Is it
possible that you do not, will not recommend it because you know it is an
emotion that makes one an emotional cripple?
There are
definitions that leap off a page. The
following from the book of Provberbs does just that, "Proverbs 14:30 "A heart at peace
gives life to the body envy rots the bones."
So then, get out your color chart, because obviously the color
of envy is green.
Green with envy. Sick
with envy. Yes, green is the perfect
color.
Have you ever stopped to think that there
are some sins some people actually boast about? But can you think of anyone who has boasted
about being envious?
That grand old philosopher Socrates
wrote, “Envy is the
daughter of pride, the author of murder and revenge, the begetter of secret
sedition, the perpetual tormenter of virtue."
Envy
is powerful. It has the power to turn a
rainbow into tattle tale grey.
A man named
William Boice wrote:
"-- Dear Lord, I have been re-reading the record of the rich young ruler and his obviously wrong choice. But it has set me thinking. No matter how much wealth he had, he could not -
ride in a car,
have any surgery,
turn on a light,
buy penicillin,
hear a pipe organ,
watch TV,
wash dishes in running water,
type a letter,
mow a lawn,
fly in an airplane,
sleep on an innerspring mattress,
or talk on the phone.
if he was rich, then what am I?"

To have envy as a
friend is to chose an enemy as a friend.
A number of
years ago Dear Abby received the following letter
Dear Abby, Happiness is knowing that your parents won’t almost kill you if you come home a little late. Happiness is having your own bedroom. Happiness is having parents that trust you. Happiness is getting the telephone call you’ve been praying for. Happiness is getting good grades and making your parents who don’t fight. Happiness is knowing that you’re well dressed as anybody. Happiness is something I don’t have. - 15 and Unhappy
A few days later the Dear Abby newspaper column carried this response to the above letter from a 13 year old girl:
Dear Abby, Happiness is being able to walk. Happiness is being able to talk. Happiness is being able to see. Happiness is being able to hear. Unhappiness is reading a letter from a 15 year old girl who can do all these things and still says she isn’t happy. I can talk, I can see, I can hear, but I can’t walk. - Thirteen and Happy.

Attitude. The thoughts that rule the mind and warm or
chill the heart.
Envy is a
mathematics game in which if you must always have more you will always end up
having less.
Read and
win...the FOLLOWING prize of good sense and Biblical truth.
Phil 4:11-12 "... I have learned to
be content whatever the circumstances. I know what it is to be in need, and I
know what it is to have plenty. I have learned the secret of being content in
any and every situation, whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty
or in want. I can do everything through him who gives me strength."
Are you
envious of anyone? Then pray for
them. Pray that their success which has
made you envious will become more so.
Overcome your smallness by praying for their bigness.
You can't do
that? You can't afford not to.
And oh how
much better you will then feel about yourself and about that person as
well. Call it the benefits of showing
mercy. Mercy to yourself who was overcome by envy.
Would you
mute that loud voice of envy? Would you
reduce it to a whisper even if you cannot completely silence it? Then...
...to break free of this emotional
immaturity seek the maturity of a humble heart.
It is hard to be a prideful fool while kneeling on your knees before the
throne of grace.
Let
me close with this thought...Envy is the sickness of counting the
other fellow's blessings rather than your own.
