In my younger years I collected stamps. They were lifelines to all these strange and
exotic places stretched across the world.
And then I grew to be a man and was fortunate to visit some of these
places...as far to the west as Moscow or as far to the East as Beijing.
I still collect books
and the ideas I find within them. I
collect good memories and shine them and bad memories and once I have milked
them for all the lessons I can learn from them...work at forgetting them.
In the process of all
this collecting and discarding I have gotten pretty good at filtering and
filing away things that cause me stress.
Not perfect...for I can be as bad at dredging up facts and fantasies
that do nothing but raise my blood pressure and lower my common sense...as bad
as anyone...but I work at trying to eliminate such nonsense.
Remember, as I often write, I am not perfect.
Meanwhile back at the
thinking man's ranch let's look at some simple approaches that shrink, mutilate
and otherwise lessen stress.
My first bit of advice
is one I have never kept and still don't keep.
1. Avoid overflow. Don't fill your hours so full there is no
room to take a deep breath or even a simple sigh. If just can't find enough time to smell the
roses at least cast your eyes in the direction garden. Some folks just really
are in love with busy...and I must confess I have been and am one of them.
2. Focus on the
future. The messes of the past have left
their stains and their scars but call them etchings on the sands of time and
leave the etchings to slowly fade away.
Hopefully you have milked those past tense mistakes for all their
worth...now buy a new cow and in the new pasture of tomorrow get on with it.
3. Do you have a break that
won't heal. If it is physical, become
more proficient on crutches. If it is
emotional...lean on the Lord. If all the
time in the world is not going to erase it...stop looking back at the clock and
look forward to a positive thinking calendar.
4. Be patient. Some things take forever to heal when you are
having trouble dedicating yourself past tomorrow afternoon. Be patient.
Most of us have a reasonably good forgetter and can lessen the weight of
some miserable memory.
Pray your thoughts
through it...heavenly help and earthly effort do combine to make it possible.
And remember...eventually...some
things do get better...and that door closed doesn't just allow another door to
open. It sometimes lets you escape to
daylight through a hole in the roof.
5. Have you thought about
what is causing you your stress with over and over again thoughts. Try to go at a problem from a different point
of view. That's what friends are
for...they...if you give them the chance they may well give you that different
point of view.
6. Overcome an old problem
with a new hobby. Excited enthusiasm
does wonders in putting a shine on what you might think has no place to shine.
7. Eat and drink
healthily. It is too often done by
some...this drinking too much in the collection of hangovers and eating too
much in the collection of pounds. Bad
idea. The whole idea is a stress in
itself.
8. You think things
couldn't be worse. Think on some
alternatives. You'll be surprised at
what you come up with.
Maybe do a print out
of these 8 ideas and carry them around in your pocket and pull them out from
time to time.
