Loneliness
truly is a common human experience. The earliest pages of the Bible reveal a
lonely man and a loving God who said, "It is not good that man should be
alone."
Are you ever
lonely and can you do anything about it?
Would trying to help the loneliness of others help your own?
Who is in
your loop?
" I sought the Lord, and
afterward I knew
he moved my soul to seek him, seeking me;
it was not I that found, O Savior true;
no, I was found of thee.
Thou didst reach forth thy hand and mine enfold;
I walked and sank not on the storm-vexed sea;
'twas not so much that I on thee took hold,
as thou, dear Lord, on me.
I find, I walk, I love, but oh, the whole
of love is but my answer, Lord, to thee;
for thou wert long beforehand with my soul,
always thou lovedst me."

And in that
lovely and loving hymn is a relationship that being at the top of our
relationship can do such great things for the problem of loneliness.
Whether we are
reaching up to heaven or out to our fellowman the more "other" in our
lives we seek the more cure for loneliness we will find.
That homeless
man to whom you gave a smile that was bigger than the cash donation to his need. You know what I mean? It is too easy to drop a dollar into an
outstretched with a look on one's face that says, "Alright, here's your
money. Now go away."
Or taking an extra step
out the back door to thank the pool man for doing a good job or the yard man or
the postman. That little effort that
says to another human being "I know you exist. I care that you exist and just because I am
paying you for your deed does not mean I should not say "Thank you for a job
well done."
The more people feel unloved...the lonelier they are! Would you accept that as truth?
Don't sleep too much? I thought I would get this problem out of the
way early on. Sleep is for rest...but it
is also sometimes an escape mechanism.
If you overwhelmed by loneliness the bed is the place you will just find
more of it.
Get involved in
activities when it is the last thing you want to do. Fact is, the more you don't want to... is the
very reason why you should make yourself join a hobby group...or serve food to
the homeless...or join a chess or scrabble club...or a book club where you bounce
around ideas and thereby revive your mind made sluggish by the weight of lonely
depression...or...
Lee Iacocca was once the President of the Ford Motor Co. and he
said that the biggest surprise of his career wasn’t being sacked from his high
powered position – it was what happened afterward - - nothing. Nothing
happened! In his autobiography he wrote, “I was hurting pretty bad. I could
have used a phone call from someone who said, ’let’s have a coffee.’ But most
of my friends deserted me. It was the greatest shock of my life!”
Do you have a
friend you have deserted who has had some things happen to she or he that you
could make easier by just a phone call or a note that read, "Just thinking
about you and hoping all goes well with you and yours"
Maybe you really
do care but you've been so very busy...but just a reminder... “A friend loves
at all times” (Proverbs 17:17).
Sometimes being friendly can help our loneliness as much or more as
having someone be friendly to us.
Someone once
said that if Galileo lived today he would have concluded that the sun revolved
around himself.
It is this kind of attitude in some folk that drives other folk away
and they never realize it.
“Be devoted to
one another in brotherly love. Honour one another above yourselves” (Romans
12:10).
And therein
lies the cure for much loneliness...selflessness rather than selfishness.
In his book,
“The Fine Art of Friendship” Ted Engstrom explains that, “You are allowed to
keep only that which you consciously give away. Give away your friendship, and
you will receive friendship in return. Give away yourself, and your ’better’
self will return to you many times over.”
Would you
recommend yourself as someone people would want to be around? Do you tell jokes or just make fun of
people? Do you wear a perpetual frown
and wonder why you see so few smiles? Do
you argue at the drop of a comment and wonder why people are saying "Good
to have seen you" as they walk away.
Are you a keeper of kind remarks and decent deeds that you spread
around wherever you are? People like to
have nice people around.
Surprise...surprise.
God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.
