Nero sat on a throne while Paul rotted in jail but today we call dogs Nero while we call our sons Paul.
What is
success? There are 820 thousand books on
the subject so it is certainly a popular question. And here I am trying to attack the question
with answers myself.
Ralph Waldo Emerson did a better than
competent job of aiming in the right direction of an answer. He once wrote, Ralph Waldo Emerson
wrote: To laugh often and much; To win the respect of intelligent people and
the affection of children; To earn the approbation of honest critics and endure
the betrayal of false friends; To appreciate beauty; To find the best in
others; To give of one’s self; To leave the world a bit better, whether by a
healthy child, a garden patch, or a redeemed social condition; To have played
and laughed with enthusiasm and sung with exultation; To know even one life has
breathed easier because you have lived."
The Apostle Paul finally got it right but before he
got it right...he got it wrong.
For a good portion of life he a Hebrew of
the Hebrews. He had the politically
correct philosophy. His pedigree was top
of the line. But then there was the road
to Damascus and in that monumental meeting time...Saul, not yet having both the
character and name change, realized that if he did not follow Christ he was a
nothing well on its way to continue happening.
And what Paul really learned that you and
I should treasure as part of our thinking...it is not so much the arrival as
the journey that counts.
And yes, Paul is full of gems. "‘forgetting
what is behind…I press on toward the goal."
In short, it is not enough to be King or
Queen of the Kindergarten or even valedictorian in High School or College. What counts is not today's achievement that
rapidly becomes yesterdays memory but the journey...and that a journey that is
always seeking the center of the spiritual and emotional bulls eye.
Someone once asked Paul Harvey, the
journalist and radio commentator, to reveal the secret of his success. "I
get up when I fall down," said Harvey.
When
James Garfield (later President of the U.S.) was principal of Hiram College in
Ohio, a father asked him if the course of study could be simplified so that his
son might be able to go through by a shorter route. "Certainly,"
Garfield replied. "But it all depends on what you want to make of your
boy. When God wants to make an oak tree, He takes a hundred years. When He
wants to make a squash he requires only two months."
We are producing too
many squashes and not enough oak trees in our day
