James
S. Hewett tells of a neighbor he had who was trying to put a TV antenna on his
roof, but was having a terrible time. Hewett decided to give him a hand. He
went over and took with him his best tools and soon had the antenna up. His
neighbor asked him what he made with such fancy tools. Hewett replied,
“Friends, mostly.”
Are you sometimes your own
worst enemy? To improve this condition
make God your best friend.
In short, when you buy
into his commandments and teachings and leadings you become a nicer move loving
God worshiping individual...and therefore more likeable to yourself and those
around you.
And so with joy and an underlining I read
again those words from John, " “If you obey my commands,
you will remain in my love, just as I have obeyed my Father's commands and
remain in his love. I have told you this so that my joy may be in you and that
your joy may be complete ... You are my friends if you do what I command.” (John
15:10-11, 14)
Think on it this way. Do you have a friend you often call not
because you want to discuss a crisis but just because that is what one does
with a friend.
Then why not carry this truth one spiritual step further and
dial heaven on a regular basis. It doesn't have to be a smart phone call from a
fox hole moment...it can be no more than contacting that "What a friend I have
in Jesus" and the good feeling that comes from having made the call.
Dial heaven...that describes it
reasonably well...now doesn't it?
I am not
talking about obeying God because of fear or compulsion or a sense of
duty...that's almost a spiritual dictatorship.
I'm talking about the relationship.
I'm talking about joining
the Friends of God club.
That friend or those friends...do you not as a part of that
relationship want to know more and more about them? Is not the same true of your Father God and
Jesus His son...could that possibly be why we preachers are always talking
about reading scripture on a regular basis (a knowledge improvement program) and
memorizing scripture.
Rick Warren recommends what he
calls “breath prayers” - that is short simple prayers you can say with one
breath. For example, “You are with me” or “Help me trust you” or “”Thank you
for my lunch.” Rick Warren warns, “If you are seeking an experience of his
presence through all of this, you have missed the point. We don’t praise God to
feel good but to do good. Your goal is not a feeling, but a continual awareness
of the reality that God is always present.
