Every day we should hear at least one little song, read one good poem, see one exquisite picture, and, if possible, speak a few sensible words.
Johann Wolfgang Von Goethe

You are a person who loves to be surrounded by sound or you are an individual who requires the peace and quiet of silence...

You like the turmoil of crowds, what you may refer to as the rich feeling of activity all around...

or vastly prefer the quiet shadows and peaceful lanes and solitude where it is so quiet you can hear the wind when it is only a whisper.

And think upon all the sounds that have visited you so far in your life and living..

The sound of your mother's and father's voice.

And hopefully there was warmth and goodness there...and for most of you that was most likely so...but for others...regrettably it was not.

Nevertheless...we cannot escape all the sounds that have visited us...we cannot escape them...so we must adapt where it is necessary...and learn where it is helpful...and in our own contribution of sound bless the world by the sounds we ourselves make.

If the sounds you have heard or made yourself were curses you remember them...

If they had about them the warmth of forgiveness given and received...you remember them.

I examine a few sounds of the past...please insert a few of your own.

       Lincoln's Gettysberg address.

       Roosevelt's quiet fireside chats.

       Hitler's mad wild harangues.

Suppose there had never been the sounds of those shots at Bunker Hill?

What if there had never been the particular sounds of waves flapping against the bow of the Mayflower?

Suppose America had never an anthem to be sung because there had never been an America?

England no kingly or less than kingly comments from their parade of Kings.'

What of Paul and his missionaries and all the hears that tuned into his message and were never the same again?

What of the cries of the martyr Stephen?

"Lord, lay not this sin to their charge," cried Stephen  and since sound never dies but only keeps on slowly fading away these words still reverberating across the universe.

And what of the ears of Paul who heard these sounds from Stephen and...

And Christ speaking in fields and by azure lakes and standing in marketplaces with beggars and thieves and the common man...

And what if there had never been the sounds of the Sermon on the Mount.

And what if the skies had stayed empty over the hills outside of Bethlehem...never to be filled by angel voices.

And the sounds of the prophets duly recorded in our Holy Bible...Isaiah, Jeremiah, Nehemiah and a host of others.

What of Moses and the ten commandments and the voice of God?

What of the sounds of Abraham and Isaac and Noah and the sound of rain falling for forty days and forty nights.

What of the two voices in the Garden of Eden?

What of the millions of debates that have taken place through all these centuries and continue still...and all the wisdom found in them...and all the prejudice found in them...and all the foolishness found in them...

What of the sound of mobs and how easily the shouting causes logic to die...and discourse to be trampled underfoot...and the shouting just grow louder and the anger increase...and...

Have you ever shouted at your child or children "Shut up!"...and the sound was certainly loud enough to be heard...and most likely they shut up but did you achieve what you were really trying to achieve.

In closing...allow me to tweak your imagination and mine...to imagine that there had always been newspeople to report what was happening and in this imagination time imagine that certainly people had been silent...remained silent...not spoken a word.

And here then is that imaginary newscast.

This news bulletin is from 1940 and there is no Adolph Hitler shouting "Let us begin a war."

"There is a great deal of activity and prosperity  in Europe today.  Peace reigns between all nations and increasing commerce is benefiting everyone.

The fields lie heavy with as bountiful a supply of crops as has anyone has seen since the turn of the century.

The Germany people are preparing for their annual festivals and the churches are full with people thanking God for their harves.  Brotherhood abounds.

BUT THIS DID NOT HAPPEN AND BECAUSE ONE MAN RAISED HIS VOICE TO INSTITUTE AND PRAISE WAR MILLIONS DIED.

Move back further in time and imagine it is 1776.  The following imaginary broadcast...read it.

"The war is over.  England had won and America still remains under the sovereinty of the crown.

Patrick Henry was asked what he started to say and stopped before he continued, "Give me..."  "No comment" was his reply.

After a brief time in Valley Forge George Washington has returned to his home on the Potomac and is giving no interviews."

BUT PATRICK HENRY DID SPEAK OUT...AND GEORGE WASHINGTON WITH FEW BUT IMPORTANT WORDS AND MIGHTY COURAGE LED HIS MEN AND A NEW COUNTRY WAS FORMED.

Go back now back now to the time of Christ and a crucifixion and a resurrection.

"Today on a cross on a ragged hill called Golgotha one of Jesus of Nazareth, while thunder roared in the background, looked as if he wanted to say something.

       But he didn't.

BUT HE DID.  "FORGIVE THEM FOR THEY KNOW NOT WHAT THEY DO."  AND ONE OF THE SOLDIERS TAKING HIM DOWN SAID, "THIS WAS THE SON OF GOD."

And now continue to imagine that a man named Paul who everyone has believed had great promise for what he would do...so far as done and said nothing.

"A strange figure is today walking across the long miles of Asia.  Supposition has it that he is a disciple of some Galilean, but since he will not speak when spoken to our reporters have had a dfficult time finding out exactly why he is making this long journey.

It is reported he plans to go on through asia, over to Macedonia, down to Greece and Corinth and then back home.

It is a long way to walk and say nothing.

BUT HE DID MAKE THAT LONG JOURNEY AND SAY NOTHING.  HE PREACHED AND PUT OUT MESSAGE OF A LIVING LORD AND WAS JAILED FOR HIS EFFORTS AND PUNISHED CONSTATLY BUT HE WOULD NOT BE QUIET...FOR HE HAD AN ETERNAL MESSAGE TO SHARE.

If the life you are living were one day summed up in a newscast...how would it read?

What is and will be your heritage?

How can we keep our faith from being a weak and fruitless thing?  How can we not be foolish little men and women groveling in the dark shadows of overeager egos.

Well, first we must do more than just pray.  We must believe in our own prayers.

It's an old joke, I went to the doctor and I said, “Doc, when I do this, it hurts.” And the doctor said, “Then don't do that.”

How many things have you been anxious about that were things which you knew before you got into them were probably going to create some problems for you?  And if you asked your doctor, or your minister, or common sense and your God, all of them would have said, “Don’t do that.”

A QUOTE FROM THOUGHTS POSTED ON MY OTHER BLOG WYRICK'S WRITINGS ENTITLED

Two stores faced each other across a very busy street.  Their owners were in constant competition with each other.  One day, the owner of one store put out a sign that read – If you want it, we have it!

Almost immediately the other owner put out a sign –If we don’t have it, you don’t need it!

A QUOTE FROM THOUGHTS POSTED ON MY OTHER BLOG WYRICK'S WRITINGS ENTITLED

WHO ARE YOU?

NO…WHOSE ARE YOU?

Who are you?  Whose are you?

You influence and are influenced according to the answer you give.

Are you are the flavor of the month because you are determined to be like everyone else no matter what?  If so, consider being more independent in our thinking and actions...because God wants you to grow up.

It may be easier being someone's shadow but wouldn't you really rather be a sun.

QUOTE FROM THOUGHTS  POSTED ON WYRICK'S WRITINGS ENTITLED "Who Are You?  Whose Are You?"

This is an old quote, and a romantic one as well but, nevertheless, can anyone say of you, “I love you not because of who you are, but because of who I am when I am with you.

QUOTE FROM THOUGHT PIECE POSTED ON WYRICK'S WRITINGS ENTITLED

" WHEN A NATION STRAYS TOO FAR FROM BEING MORAL IT IS WELL ON IT'S WAY TO BECOMING A MESS

        James 4:17

To him therefore who knows to do good, and doesn’t do it, to him it is sin.

Someone once said: “A belief is what you hold, a conviction is what holds you!”

So what holds you, constructs you, leads you with a push when needed?

Quotes POSTED ON WYRICK'S WRITING ENTITLED WHO ARE YOU?

NO…WHOSE ARE YOU?

In a Peanuts cartoon strip Peppermint Patty is shown talking to Charlie Brown.

“Guess what, Chuck? It’s the first day of school and I got sent to the principal’s office.

And it’s your fault!”

Charlie Brown responds, “My fault? How could it be my fault? Why do you say everything is my fault?”

To which she declares, “You’re my friend, aren’t you, Chuck? You should have been a better influence on me.”

In the comics, it’s funny… but in real life it’s much more complicated.

QUOTES ABOUT THIS WONDERFUL INSPIRING INFORMATIVE book

STILL RECEIVING RAVE REVIEWS 8 YEARS AFTER IT'S PUBLICATION.

"Positive, powerful utterances...skillfully enhancing our understanding and appreciation of Lincoln while revealing the Divine source of his strength."

Lt. Colonel C.A. Olsen (Ret.) Asbury College (Professor Ret.)

"The Spiritual Abraham Lincoln is an extremely well written book that investigates what might be termed the spiritual side of President Lincoln. It's both scholarly and very readable. I came away impressed at Mr. Wyrick's portrayal of the President and with an altered and enlarged vision of the man:'

William Hoffman, Award winning fiction writer; author of Blood and Guile, and Wild Thorn

"Wyrick has authored a wonderful examination of the spirituality of one of American history's most devoutly religious leaders...a pleasant and readable book that has a rich depth of information."

              Maynard Pittendreigh Presbyterian minister

"When it comes to invoking religion in support of any of their decisions, politicians need to sit at the feet of Abraham Lincoln. Reinhold Niebuhr once called him 'America's greatest theologian.' Why so great? Because he invariably distinguished between human works and the works of the Almighty. As Wyrick says, 'He wore the mantle of humility easily: because he was more impressed with what God was doing in the world than with what he, president of the United States in the midst of an awful crisis, was doing. That is why in his last major speech he distinguished between both human causes in the Civil War and the Almighty's 'own purposes.' Lincoln would have agreed that it is better to leave God-talk out of politics than to decorate human proposals with divinity. This is a book for our American time. Through his careful study of Lincoln's career, Wyrick compels us to remember that piety belongs in politics only when piety transcends politics."

       Dr. Donald W. Shriver

Emeritus professor at Union Theological Seminary in New York. Author of An Ethic for Enemies: Forgiveness in Politics

"V. Neil Wyrick's fine work allows the reader to appreciate Abraham Lincoln's Christian commitment and his prophetic role in American history. Should have a wide readership."

James H. Smylie Professor of Church History (Ret.) Union Theological Seminary, Richmond, Virginia

"Neil Wyrick's The Spiritual Abraham Lincoln should be read by anyone attempting to understand the man who was probably the most complex person to ever hold the office of president of the United States. Dr. Wyrick is intent on demonstrating that the spirituality so often expressed in Lincoln's writings and speeches was not merely lip service to a Deity, but rather expressions of a profound faith in a real God. It was this faith that provided the wisdom, compassion, insight and sometimes steel that Lincoln would need in full measure as he led the United States through the Civil War. Dr. Wyrick's clear and unpretentious style of presentation is very much in keeping with the character ofhis subject, and in so doing, Wyrick makes his point very well that Lincoln, his beliefs, and the faith that formed them, are as relevant to a troubled America in 2004 as they were in 1863."

Daniel Allen Butler, author of "Unsinkable"; The Full Story of the RMS Titanic, The Lusitania and The Age o f Cunard
