++++++++++A little girl looked up at her daddy and said, "Why can't you be born grown up or stay always little? It hurts so much to grow up."
The old master, Renoir,
as he painted grimaced and sometimes cried out in pain. Every stroke he took was accompanied by the
agony of extreme arthritis.
And one day, his young
student Matisse asked him why despite the torment he continued to paint. The reply was priceless, "The pain
passes, but the beauty remains."
Listen to the words
of Jesus, "Come unto me, all ye who are weary and burdened, and I will
give you peace."
I have read them...I have had
them echo in the ears of my soul...and I have found them true...and more than
once.
A recurring theme in
Paul's writings is spiritual maturity.
And that is the kind of growth that carries with it growing pains...such
as the little girl was talking about.
Stability. How to find it, accept the possibility of it,
benefit from it...by accepting certain basic truths such as "
Safety consists not in the absence of danger but in the presence of God.
Duke University did
a study on finding or losing and better still keeping peace of mind.
First, they found
that people who nurse resentment and hold on to grudges for fear they will lose
them...such people are perpetually unhappy and make everyone around them feel
the same.
Second, they live
permanently in the past, unwholesome in their preoccupation with all the bad
portions of the past...magnifying all the mistakes they have made so that they
weigh a thousand pounds.
Thirdly, these
masters at losing and never finding peace of mind waste time and energy
fighting things they cannot change.
Fourthly, those
studying the road to unhappiness found that those who were most successfully
unsuccessful in the art of living were reclusive...contently hosting an
Olympics filled with people running away from life.
Fifth, they majored
in self pity. Their favorite phrase was
"Woe is me" and they repeated many times in any single day.
Sixth. Those who carried anxiety to an extreme had
no sense of humor, were overwhelmed more often by hate and prejudice rather
than love and compassion.
Seventh. They
expected little of themselves...had little self confidence and fed this lack
with negative thinking...had no goals because they felt they neither would or
could achieve them.
Eighth. These melancholy folk never sought after
someone bigger than themselves...which is of course is the theme of the
Christian...
