If you were sitting in the county jail with the usual kind of individuals who people such places, would you be anxious or at ease?

If it looked as if you might soon be walking down execution row, how do you think you would handle it?

To top it all off, suppose you hadn’t been feeling very good and indeed were getting more queasy by the moment, what prescription would you give yourself to make a bad situation better?

Well, meet the Apostle Paul, because these were his problems.

Things had gone from bad to worse and they weren’t getting any better. Seated there in jail he still did not begin to beat his head against the bars in frustration. He did not throw a hissy fit. He just kept repeating over and over and over again. “Rejoice.”

And then he sat down and began to write to his largely Gentile congregation in Phillippi a letter filled with exuberant optimism.

Unbelievably, not with fear and frustration oozing out of every sentence, but rather with a host of whoopee admonitions. “Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your request to God. And the peace of God which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”

Worry about nothing – pray about everything, he admonishes.

Read the entire book of Phillippians and it really begins to get down to the nitty-gritty. A quitter never wins. A winner never quits. Hang in there.

Would you have less anxiety? Then be more patient.

The Bible puts it well, “Wait on the Lord; be of good courage and he shall strengthen thy heart.” (Psalms 27:14) Part of a patience regime means that sometimes you must allow yourself a little time to worry.

Therefore, if you are having the morning blues look at your watch and allow yourself a quota of ten or fifteen minutes of honest concern. Then say to yourself, “

If I need to worry more later on in the day I’ll keep an appointment for some more worry time late in the afternoon.”

After a certain period of time given to worry it is no longer proves constructive in finding answers to your problem but rather destructive.

Would you have less anxiety? Then have hope for breakfast, lunch and dinner. God’s hope.

“Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on thee.” (Isaiah 26:3)

Would you have less anxiety?

Well, here comes Paul with some more advice, “Work out your own salvation, for it is God that worketh in you.” Seek with mighty diligence to be thankful for the best and try to learn from the worst. Nothing says we have to like grim, gray days when things are going badly, but everything we have been taught in our Christian faith says we must hold on to the truth, God is with me.

“I am come that they might have life and that they might have it more abundantly,” spoke Jesus. (John 10:10) It is a gift of energy that is being offered and it takes a great deal of this heavenly vigor to push against some of the problems that come to greet us.

But that is the point, when our spiritual applications are apathetic our responses to life are lifeless and filled with regret.

If God be for us, against the backdrop of not time but eternity, who can be against us. Believe it. It is the cornerstone of our faith.
