Legend has it that this story was told by John, who as you know was named the Beloved Disciple.
It is about a little child whose dog has died. What is important is not the source but how it emphasizes the gentle but powerful loving nature of our Lord.
“The small boy sat weeping for his dog lay dead beside him.
At that moment the Master reached down, lifted the little one in His arms and began to speak to him of how animals live in a different way from men and are therefore able to see what few humans can ever see.
Looking up into the face of this kind man from Judea the child seemed entranced.

Then Jesus
placed within the tiny hand of the little boy a small shell that He had
found on the shore that morning and had been carrying in his tunic.
It was then He explained how the small creature that had lived within this house had now left it.
The little boy stared at the shell and listened as he was told how a small shell can house a living creature who one day departs but does not die.

And
because little ones have such a nearness to heaven and understanding
that is sometimes lost in growing maturity he understood.
And he smiled and Jesus smiled and while he was still saddened he accepted that change is an ongoing part of the plans of God.
"For the LORD is good; His lovingkindness is everlasting And His faithfulness to all generations." Psalm 100:5
