His walk was the walk of a man who was weary of life and could see no future. He was a failure in the past, present and future. If you asked him if he believed in God he would began to tell a story.

He would tell you of one day when while walking he stubbed his toe on a watch. It was a rather large watch and it skidded away from him and crashed again an old stone wall.

He picked it up and began to examine it.

It consisted of a complicated arrangement of wheels, springs, jewels and balances; neatly combined in a case and covered with crystal.

On closer examination he discovered that every tiny piece of its intricate mechanism performed according to a definite schedule, and that each part was so related to every other part that the hands moved about the dial according to a dependable and unvarying routine.

And if you were still listening to his story he would go on to tell you that while he had never seen a watch being made he had reached a conclusion as to how it had come to be.

That out of the bowels of the earth had come iron and gold and the elements of glass and that they had refined themselves and fashioned themselves into springs and wheels and crystals and one day all by themselves had started to “tick.” And that the “tick” had been followed by a “tock.”

And he would say this with sadness because he knew what you were thinking and how you were thinking of how he had a reputation for not believing in God…and how he believed that there was creation but no Creator.

And he could see sadness in your eyes and he understood for he knew sadness well…he could not, would not believe in God.

“I believe in myself and that is all,” and he would say this and had said this many times.

“To one who has faith, no explanation is necessary. To one without faith, no explanation is possible.” (St. Thomas Aquinas)
