A number of years back on "The Merv Griffin Show," the guest was a body builder.
During the interview, Merv asked "Why do you develop those particular muscles?"

The body builder simply stepped forward and flexed a series of well-defined muscles from chest to calf.

The audience applauded. "What do you use all those muscles for?"

Merv asked. Again, the muscular specimen flexed, and biceps and triceps sprouted to impressive proportions.

"But what do you USE those muscles for?" Merv persisted. The body builder was bewildered. He didn't have an answer other than to display his well-developed frame.

We have to be careful as we build our spiritual muscles for like the muscle builder...if we are not careful...we will be building them so we can show off our spiritual muscles  and receive praise for them.

Bible reading pushups..for then folk will say of us..."He/she is a good man/woman look how much they study the Bible.  And studying the Bible is good...but what then do we do with these spiritual truths...how often do we put these muscles in action by loving the unloveable and forgiving the unforgiveable?

Prayer exercises  and it does indeed strengthen our souls but then do we go out and physically help someone we have been praying for.

Spiritual muscles gained from spiritual exercises are good but they must be used in Christian works and actions.

There is no particular virtue to growing old if you do not grow up.  Someone once wrote on the tombstone of a recently deceased, “Died at 30, buried at 80.”

With no God above, with no friends about, with no goal set before you to achieve, you can grow weary of SO MUCH NOTHINGNESS and feel a fatigue for which there is no cure.

"THE SPIRITUAL ABRAHAM LINCOLN is an extremely well written book...it is both scholarly and very readable.  I came away impressed at Mr. Wyrick's portrayal of that President with an altered and enlarged vision of the man.
