GOOD EXAMPLES ARE GOOD

Mark Twain had way of going for the jugular vein. One day when someone was complaining to him about how someone who was a “goody goody” Twain replied, “An interesting descriptive phrase but then I’ve always noticed that few things are harder to put up with than the annoyance of a good example.”

A good example…it is rather important now isn’t it.

When Chief Toma Chi Chi, in 18th century Georgia, was asked by the Wesley to give his life to Christ he simply replied, “Christians steal, Christians beat men, Christians keep slaves. Why me want to be Christian?”

“I’d rather see a sermon than hear one. The eyes a better pupil than the ear.” I heard that from a pulpit more years ago than I can almost count and I have not forgotten it nor do I want to.

“Preach the Gospel at all times and when necessary use words.” That’s the way St. Francis of Assissi put it.

One man said that setting a good example for his children took all the fun out of middle age,” but then he stopped grinning and got serious, “but I do it anyway or certainly try hard.”

We need to be that kind of hero in our relationships, heroic in keeping moral codes and uplifting our best for a daily renewal of our lives.

And we can’t just let how we live be just going along with the crowd. “It’s really quite democratic to live that way,” said someone to me one day and I reached back for an old idea rattling around in my head for years, “ The best example of democracy I can recall is five wolves sitting down to dinner with one sheep.”

So don’t be a sheep among wolves. Which means…watch out for wolves who may out vote you but not necessarily be qualified to lead you.
