Once Upon A Time There Was A Pulpit Committee…

Who turned down Peter because he was in denial.

And turned down Thomas because they had doubts about him.

And turned down Judas because they felt they could not trust him.

And turned down Andrew because he was too close to the Master and therefore his preaching might be too uncompromising.

And turned down James because anyone called a “Son of Thunder” might be too opinionated.

And turned down John because to much early Christian art depicted him as passive and meek.

And turned down Philip because he was inconsequential and hardly mentioned in the Bible.

And turned down Bartholomew, or as some would call him Nathanael, because he had once said something

he regretted all his life, “Can there any good thing come out of Nazareth?’

And turned down Matthew because he had been a tax collector and therefore was too worldly.

And turned down Simon the Zealot because people with too much enthusiasm always made them nervous.

And turned down James, the Son of Alphaeus, because his family ties might make him arrogant.

And turned down Jesus himself because they did not like his stories.  They made them nervous.
