On the fly leaf of an old Bible written in fading ink, is
a beautiful paraphrase of the text John 10:1-10 "My God in his loving kindness shall
meet me at every corner."
Catherine
Marshall was overwhelmed by grief, after her husband Peter Marshall died. He had been an outstanding minister in
Washington, D.C. in the prime of his life.
She then wrote a book entitled TO LIVE AGAIN. Not that many pages from its beginning she
writes, "God (through this grief) was asking me to grow up, to take a new
step toward maturity."
And when she did
this, she talks of how God took "the uncompromising raw material of my
grief and smashed hope and turned them into astonishing good."
God? It always
comes down to this. For though there is
always death, poverty, frustration, worry, war and the staggering misery of
loss...over it all...there reigns a Creator and from this Creator comes a
purpose and to this creator we must and can pray a constant prayer to better
understand.
How
does that old and well loved hymn sum it up?
"In
the cross of Christ I glory
Towering
o'er the wrecks of time..."
Anxiety and
grief are bulldogs. They grab hold
sometimes and will not let go. They
create sleepless nights in which constant reruns of what has happened catapult
over and over again through the caverns of our minds.
Is there any hope at such a time besides constant prayer?
There
is indeed.
I
casll it positive repetitions. Be it a favorite
Psalm or the name of Jesus repeated over and over again...by so doing carving
deeply the thoughts...engraving...branding them into your very being.
The brain can only handle one thing at a time...so if you
overwhelm your rampant worrisome thoughts into more pleasant musings...at least
for a little while your anxiety and/or your grief will take a hiatus.
And...yes...these new thoughts can become a habit.

THE SPIRITUAL ABRAHAM LINCOLN.
It is little wonder that once the war was
over, wretched memories fed anger loud and long. Neither side could be proud of some things
that happened during the war or at their many prison camps. The meanness in some men had multiplied. They felt their uniforms allowed it.
Andersonville, or Camp Sumter
as it was officially known, in southwest Georgia is remembered as one of the
worst.
By the end of the war, it had
held 50,000 prisoners on a piece of land no larger than twenty-six acres.
Some men had called pits in
the ground their home. During its short
fourteen-month existence, 13,000 soldiers who had survived in battle died in
captivity under the most terrible conditions.
When the war was over the
superintendent was hanged.
