We are constantly overcoming or being overcome. That's life which is why we take a look at
this particular phenomena and what we should do about it.
So
what are you working to overcome? Let's put it this
way, do you lose your patience so often you need an emotional GPS to be able to
find it again.
To
deal with overcoming by your anger may I ask a question? Which kind of anger
are talking about?
Are
you the victim of a quick temper or short fuse?
Do you go from calm to chaos in a
mini-second?
Proverbs 14:17 gives a warning, "A quick-tempered man does foolish things." or as Will
Rogers said, " Whenever you fly into a rage,
you seldom make a safe landing."
Have you
heard about the dog named "August" who was always trying to chase a
mule named "Conclusion?" One day he jumped at Conclusion & bit
him, & Conclusion kicked back at August. And that was the last day of
August. Think about that for a moment.
What was it again that Proverbs 13:17 said?
"But I can't control my temper?" Did I just hear you think this?
"But I can't control my temper?" Did I just hear you think this?
Any time recently
have you lost your temper quickly and were in the midst of venting your
wrath longly and the phone rang...and it was your boss, or a friend or another
member of the family and you took the call and calmly answered, "Yes Joe,
Jane, etc. I'm fine. What can I do for you.
Are you
guilty of stubborn anger? Are you an
anger marathoner who can go on and on and on about something that has upset
you. 26 months rather than 26 miles.
Finally, there is sanctified anger; the kind of anger that should be channeled. Even moral outrage must still be constrained within the bond of reason. By way of example, those who have bombed abortion clinics...joining thereby two sins together.
Is your anger sinful? It is the question I want to close with. And your answer may well change your attitude toward your anger that you have never had before.

Is your anger sinful? It is the question I want to close with. And your answer may well change your attitude toward your anger that you have never had before.
That's
right...I'm not talking about a bad habit or emotional instability. I'm labeling anger with a tag it does
sometimes deserve.
1. Is your anger
perpetually directed toward another person. Is it almost an eternal
vengeance where forgiveness lies shattered in the dust?
2. If you are honest is
it anger for which there is no real justification?
3. Is it an anger you
cherish and nourish with a kind of evil satisfaction?
An author for Reader's Digest
writes how he studied the Amish people in preparation for an article on them.
In his observation at the school yard, he
noted that the children never screamed or yelled.
This amazed him. He spoke to the
schoolmaster. He remarked how he had not once heard an Amish child yell in
anger, and asked why the schoolmaster thought that was so. The schoolmaster
replied, "Well, have
you ever heard an Amish adult yell?"
Has your child or grandchild ever heard
you yell in anger?
Is it a sin
to pass on that kind of anger out of control?
To make your
anger a generational thing with a generation of excuses that keep repeating,
"Well, grandpa or dad or grandmother or....always had a bad temper and so
do I."
Do some
people have more trouble with anger management than others? Definitely!
Does that mean they should not cannot work hard at improving their self control
and those who live with them work at more patience...a kind of two way street
of cooperation.
Doctors from Coral Gables, Fla., compared the efficiency of the heart's pumping action in 18
men with coronary artery disease to nine healthy controls.
Each of the study
participants underwent one physical stress test (riding an exercise bicycle)
and three mental stress tests (doing math problems in their heads, recalling a
recent incident that had made them very angry, and giving a short speech to
defend themselves against a hypothetical charge of shoplifting).
Using
sophisticated X-ray techniques, the doctors took pictures of the subjects'
hearts in action during these tests.
For all the subjects, anger reduced the amount of blood
that the heart pumped to body tissues more than the other tests, but this was
especially true for those who had heart disease.
Why
anger is so much more potent than fear or mental stress is anybody's guess. But
until we see more research on this subject, it couldn't hurt to count to 10
before you blow your stack.
So
then...regard anger for what it is...an alien with an affinity for leading you
or me to self destruction...an response that needs prayerful response and
prayerful follow through...
And
most of all accepting the knowledge that impatient men and women become less so
all the time...and then some impatient men and women become more so....
... WHICH
WILL YOU BE?

Below is a quote from Rev. Wyrick's 9th book
THE SPIRITUAL ABRAHAM LINCOLN.
It is little wonder that once the war was over,
wretched memories fed anger loud and long.
Neither side could be proud of some things that happened during the war
or at their many prison camps. The
meanness in some men had multiplied.
They felt their uniforms allowed it.
Andersonville, or Camp
Sumter as it was officially known, in
southwest Georgia
is remembered as one of the worst.
By the end of the war, it had held 50,000
prisoners on a piece of land no larger than twenty-six acres.
Some men had called pits in the ground
their home. During its short
fourteen-month existence, 13,000 soldiers who had survived in battle died in
captivity under the most terrible conditions.
When the war was over the superintendent
was hanged.

WHAT OTHERS ARE SAYING ABOUT THE BOOK
"Positive,
powerful utterances...skillfully enhancing our understanding and appreciation
of Lincoln
while revealing the Divine source of his strength."
Lt.
Colonel C.A. Olsen (Ret.) Asbury
College (Professor Ret.)
"The Spiritual Abraham Lincoln is
an extremely well written book that investigates what might be
termed the spiritual side of President Lincoln. It's both scholarly and very
readable. I came away impressed at Mr. Wyrick's portrayal of the President and
with an altered and enlarged vision of the man:'
William Hoffman, Award winning fiction writer; author of Blood and Guile, and
Wild Thorn
"Wyrick has authored a wonderful
examination of the spirituality of one of American history's most devoutly
religious leaders...a pleasant and readable book that has a rich depth of
information."
Maynard Pittendreigh Presbyterian
minister
"When it comes to invoking religion in
support of any of their decisions, politicians need to sit at the feet of
Abraham Lincoln. Reinhold Niebuhr once called him 'America's greatest theologian.' Why
so great? Because he invariably distinguished between human works and the works
of the Almighty. As Wyrick says, 'He wore the mantle of humility
easily: because he was more impressed with what God was doing in the world than
with what he, president of the United States in the midst of an awful crisis,
was doing. That is why in his last major speech he distinguished between both
human causes in the Civil War and the Almighty's 'own purposes.' Lincoln would have agreed
that it is better to leave God-talk out of politics than to decorate human
proposals with divinity. This is a book for our American time. Through his
careful study of Lincoln's
career, Wyrick compels us to remember that piety belongs in politics only when
piety transcends politics."
Dr.
Donald W. Shriver
Emeritus professor at Union Theological Seminary in New York. Author of An
Ethic for Enemies: Forgiveness in Politics
"V. Neil Wyrick's fine work allows the reader to appreciate Abraham
Lincoln's Christian commitment and his prophetic role in American history.
Should have a wide readership."
James
H. Smylie Professor
of Church History (Ret.) Union Theological Seminary, Richmond, Virginia
"Neil
Wyrick's The Spiritual Abraham Lincoln should be read by anyone attempting to understand the man who was probably
the most complex person to ever hold the office of president of the United States.
Dr. Wyrick is intent on demonstrating that the spirituality so often expressed
in Lincoln's
writings and speeches was not merely lip service to a Deity, but rather
expressions of a profound faith in a real God. It was this faith that provided
the wisdom, compassion, insight and sometimes steel that Lincoln would need in full measure as he led the United States through the Civil
War. Dr. Wyrick's clear and unpretentious style of presentation is very much in
keeping with the character ofhis subject, and in so doing, Wyrick makes his
point very well that Lincoln,
his beliefs, and the faith that formed them, are as relevant to a troubled America in 2004
as they were in 1863."
Daniel Allen Butler, author
of "Unsinkable"; The Full Story of the RMS Titanic, The Lusitania and The
Age o f Cunard
