Be aggressive; in
your attitude and in your actions so that whatever it is you are enduring you
maintain your own respect. There is
something about being courageous when you don't really feel courageous that is
tremendously uplifting.
"Courage
is not the absence of fear but the mastery of it." I engraved those words on my very being many
decades ago and they have been a friend to my spirit ever since.
I
concentrated on not concentrating on any pains or problems that were crying out
for my full attention. When I was sick I
have concentrated on how much sicker I could be. The same with finances or accidents...things
could always be worse.
No...such
thinking is not foolishness...it is fact.
When things have gone sour the first
thing I have said to myself is, "Before
healing or the problem going away I am going to have to learn to live with
it...not like it...but live with it."
And in those times when problems have
been greater than other times I worked extra hard at staying in shape,
mentally, physically and spiritually.
I've simply
increased my level of self-discipline.
I always watch my sugar intake (I'm borderline diabetic) but in times
that call for extra good health I put an stronger governor on my eating
habits...and exercise more...and stretch my mental
challenges...and increase my prayers.
At such times I am simply pushing toward what I should be pushing that
hard toward... 100% of the
time? No!...but then we are
human...aren't we?
When I have done these things I like what
I see. The
satisfaction of knowing I am really going all out to fine tune courage and
common sense creates a good self image.
And the
better self image helps what I see in others and I practice and feel more love
toward my fellowman which starts me around the same circle again and
again...one positive circle after another.
Let me ask
the following question. "Will you
feel better if you let your body go to pot, your mind go to negative thinking
and your spirit go to complaining about the church rather than praising the
Christ it represents and...?"
"Rejoice
in the Lord always, I will say it again: Rejoice! Let your gentleness be
evident to all. The Lord is near. Do not be anxious about anything, but in
everything, by prayer & petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests
to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard
your hearts & your minds in Christ Jesus."
These words of
Paul sum it up pretty good...now don't they?
So what's
your problem?
She loved to do needle work. When she reached 80 she found her fingers no
longer cooperated with each other...so she took up painting...she became famous
and sold 1500 of her paintings by the time she had reached age 100...
and
oh yes...her name?...many of you remember her...because by then she had become
world famous...grandma Moses.
Would you tune up your imagination for a moment?
Imagine that
tomorrow morning when you walk out your front door you are confronted a raging
lion whose roar shakes the ground on which you are standing.
What will you do? Dial 911?
Start softly repeating "Nice kitty.
Nice kitty." Or run like the
dickens.
Flight or fight. These are the two responses you have been
choosing between all your life...and who you are
and what you are is the result of your choices.
A positive fight whether it is physical,
mental or spiritual or a negative flight.
How heavy is a glass of water?
It depends on how long you hold it. Hold it only as long as it takes to take a
drink and it really isn't very heavy.
Keep holding it and with the passage of every minute it just gets
heavier and heavier.
That's the way it is if you when become obsessive
about your worries. Working
them over and over. Holding them longer
and longer they become heavier and heavier...
Many of you know what I mean...you have an ache or a pain and
so you go to the Internet to check out what it may be and an hour later or a
day later or longer than that you are still obsessively checking.
Got a problem.
Face it, chase facts about it but don't invite it into the living room
of your mind so often and for so excessively long you wear yourself out.
Isaiah
26:3 "You will keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on You,
because he trusts in You."
If you are going to
obsessive on who you invite into your life on a regular and incessant basis...make
it the Lord...because remember you are like the company you keep.
One of my favorite truth
is the following old quote, " When traveling down the road of life take
the back seat and let God take the front seat: He's a much better driver.
QUOTES ON COPING WITH LIFE
Nothing in this world can take the place of persistence.
Talent will not; nothing is more common than unsuccessful men with talent.
Genius will not; unrewarded genius is almost a proverb.
Education will not; the world is full of educated derelicts.
Persistence and determination alone are omnipotent.

who are almost unique in their ability to learn from the experience of others
are also remarkable for their apparent disinclination to do so.

Below is a quote from Rev. Wyrick's 9th book
THE SPIRITUAL ABRAHAM LINCOLN.
It is little wonder that once the war was over,
wretched memories fed anger loud and long.
Neither side could be proud of some things that happened during the war
or at their many prison camps. The
meanness in some men had multiplied.
They felt their uniforms allowed it.
Andersonville, or Camp
Sumter as it was officially known, in
southwest Georgia
is remembered as one of the worst.
By the end of the war, it had held 50,000
prisoners on a piece of land no larger than twenty-six acres.
Some men had called pits in the ground
their home. During its short
fourteen-month existence, 13,000 soldiers who had survived in battle died in
captivity under the most terrible conditions.
When the war was over the superintendent
was hanged.

WHAT OTHERS ARE SAYING ABOUT THE BOOK
"Positive,
powerful utterances...skillfully enhancing our understanding and appreciation
of Lincoln
while revealing the Divine source of his strength."
Lt.
Colonel C.A. Olsen (Ret.) Asbury
College (Professor Ret.)
"The Spiritual Abraham Lincoln is
an extremely well written book that investigates what might be
termed the spiritual side of President Lincoln. It's both scholarly and very
readable. I came away impressed at Mr. Wyrick's portrayal of the President and
with an altered and enlarged vision of the man:'
William Hoffman, Award winning fiction writer; author of Blood and Guile, and
Wild Thorn
"Wyrick has authored a wonderful
examination of the spirituality of one of American history's most devoutly
religious leaders...a pleasant and readable book that has a rich depth of
information."
Maynard Pittendreigh Presbyterian
minister
"When it comes to invoking religion in
support of any of their decisions, politicians need to sit at the feet of
Abraham Lincoln. Reinhold Niebuhr once called him 'America's greatest theologian.' Why
so great? Because he invariably distinguished between human works and the works
of the Almighty. As Wyrick says, 'He wore the mantle of humility
easily: because he was more impressed with what God was doing in the world than
with what he, president of the United States in the midst of an awful crisis,
was doing. That is why in his last major speech he distinguished between both
human causes in the Civil War and the Almighty's 'own purposes.' Lincoln would have agreed
that it is better to leave God-talk out of politics than to decorate human
proposals with divinity. This is a book for our American time. Through his
careful study of Lincoln's
career, Wyrick compels us to remember that piety belongs in politics only when
piety transcends politics."
Dr.
Donald W. Shriver
Emeritus professor at Union Theological Seminary in New York. Author of An
Ethic for Enemies: Forgiveness in Politics
"V. Neil Wyrick's fine work allows the reader to appreciate Abraham
Lincoln's Christian commitment and his prophetic role in American history. Should
have a wide readership."
James
H. Smylie Professor
of Church History (Ret.) Union Theological Seminary, Richmond, Virginia
"Neil
Wyrick's The Spiritual Abraham Lincoln should be read by anyone attempting to understand the man who was probably
the most complex person to ever hold the office of president of the United States.
Dr. Wyrick is intent on demonstrating that the spirituality so often expressed
in Lincoln's
writings and speeches was not merely lip service to a Deity, but rather
expressions of a profound faith in a real God. It was this faith that provided
the wisdom, compassion, insight and sometimes steel that Lincoln would need in full measure as he led the United States through the Civil
War. Dr. Wyrick's clear and unpretentious style of presentation is very much in
keeping with the character ofhis subject, and in so doing, Wyrick makes his
point very well that Lincoln,
his beliefs, and the faith that formed them, are as relevant to a troubled America in 2004
as they were in 1863."
Daniel Allen Butler, author
of "Unsinkable"; The Full Story of the RMS Titanic, The Lusitania and The
Age o f Cunard
