I got to thinking this morning of all the folk who have purchased an alarm clock that is designed to ring so softly it never wakes them up.

       It's called a conscience.

And well...it does make sense in a devilish sort of way.  The 10 Commandments do keep getting in the way of greed and other sins of like kin and kind.

So...what would the world be like if the conscience volume was turned up and the conspiracy of moral silence was not allowed to reign.

Would the world be a better place if unselfishness took charge and if brotherhood wasn't constantly being beaten to death by those who have nothing better to do but preach hate.

What would this oblate spheroid be like if morality was not always on the auction block?

What if politicians signed on to a pledge of truth in advertising? (Political promises)

What if labor and management instigated what might be called "The New Math."  Which can be defined by both sides saying, "Neither of us is completely 100 right so lets work at meeting in the middle OR AT LEAST SOMEWHERE NEAR."

What if the profit motive was merged with justice?  Would that not be  the results of a moral noisy alarm clock?

History has already recorded two major magnificent accomplishments of noisy alarm clocks; the abolishment of slavery and the civil rights movement.

But gaining equal human rights be it race, gender or creed that are used to take them away...this battle never ends...for cruel misuse of power is as old as the multitude of silent consciences that abound.

It is a divine calling of God of which I speak and each and any of us who try to silence our better selves should cry out in shame any time we do.

For the truth of the matter is that we can make a difference in this world...for good or evil.

Yes...we can square our lives with purpose or we will squander them.

There is a champion inside of each of us waiting to be given life.

And part of the champions life is a person who is more of giving than getting.

Part of a champions life is giving in exceptional ways... such as helping someone escape poverty by teaching them how to read...

...or other exceptional opportunities to give and serve that will not necessarily come knocking at your door.

Nor should we sigh and say there is nothing we can do...this big lie that hovers round every corner filled with excuses.

Much that happens that is bad IS preventive...it just takes enough folk willing to go the extra mile.

       How?

"Don't ask yourself what the world needs. Ask yourself what makes you come alive, and go and do that, because what the world
needs is people who have come alive."

- Howard Thurman, African American pastor,

       Remember to...

"Treat the earth well: it was not given to you by your parents, it was loaned to you by your children. We do not inherit the Earth from our Ancestors, we borrow it from our children."

- Ancient Indian Proverb

       Because...

"How wonderful it is that nobody need wait a single moment before starting to improve the world." - Anne Frank

There are few greater truths than...

"This country will not be a good place for any of us to live in unless we make it a good place for all of us to live in."

- Theodore Roosebelt, 26th President of the United States

       So...hold tight the truth that...

“We know love by this, that he laid down his life for us - and we ought to lay down our lives for one another. How does God's love abide in anyone who has the world's goods and sees a brother or sister in need
and yet refuses to help?”
- 1 John 3:16-17
       And...

“... Let us love, not just in word or speech, but in truth and action.”
- I John 3:18
And...

"We are continually faced with a series of great opportunities brilliantly disguised as insoluble problems."
- John W. Gardner, founder of Common Cause
       So...

"Speak out for those who cannot speak, for the rights of the destitute. Speak out, judge righteously, and defend the rights of the poor and needy."
- Proverbs 31:8-9

" The earth does not belong to man; man belongs to the earth. This we know. All things are connected, like the blood which unites one family. All things are connected. Whatever befalls the earth befalls the sons of the earth. Man did not weave the web of life; he is merely a strand in it. Whatever he does to the web, he does to himself." - Chief Seattle

Below is a quote from Rev. Wyrick's 9th book THE SPIRITUAL ABRAHAM LINCOLN.

It is little wonder that once the war was over, wretched memories fed anger loud and long.  Neither side could be proud of some things that happened during the war or at their many prison camps.  The meanness in some men had multiplied.  They felt their uniforms allowed it.

Andersonville, or Camp Sumter as it was officially known, in southwest Georgia is remembered as one of the worst.

By the end of the war, it had held 50,000 prisoners on a piece of land no larger than twenty-six acres.

Some men had called pits in the ground their home.  During its short fourteen-month existence, 13,000 soldiers who had survived in battle died in captivity under the most terrible conditions.

When the war was over the superintendent was hanged.

WHAT OTHERS ARE SAYING ABOUT THE BOOK

"Positive, powerful utterances...skillfully enhancing our understanding and appreciation of Lincoln while revealing the Divine source of his strength."

Lt. Colonel C.A. Olsen (Ret.) Asbury College (Professor Ret.)

"The Spiritual Abraham Lincoln is an extremely well written book that investigates what might be termed the spiritual side of President Lincoln. It's both scholarly and very readable. I came away impressed at Mr. Wyrick's portrayal of the President and with an altered and enlarged vision of the man:'

William Hoffman, Award winning fiction writer; author of Blood and Guile, and Wild Thorn

"Wyrick has authored a wonderful examination of the spirituality of one of American history's most devoutly religious leaders...a pleasant and readable book that has a rich depth of information."

              Maynard Pittendreigh Presbyterian minister

"When it comes to invoking religion in support of any of their decisions, politicians need to sit at the feet of Abraham Lincoln. Reinhold Niebuhr once called him 'America's greatest theologian.' Why so great? Because he invariably distinguished between human works and the works of the Almighty. As Wyrick says, 'He wore the mantle of humility easily: because he was more impressed with what God was doing in the world than with what he, president of the United States in the midst of an awful crisis, was doing. That is why in his last major speech he distinguished between both human causes in the Civil War and the Almighty's 'own purposes.' Lincoln would have agreed that it is better to leave God-talk out of politics than to decorate human proposals with divinity. This is a book for our American time. Through his careful study of Lincoln's career, Wyrick compels us to remember that piety belongs in politics only when piety transcends politics."

       Dr. Donald W. Shriver

Emeritus professor at Union Theological Seminary in New York. Author of An Ethic for Enemies: Forgiveness in Politics

"V. Neil Wyrick's fine work allows the reader to appreciate Abraham Lincoln's Christian commitment and his prophetic role in American history. Should have a wide readership."

James H. Smylie Professor of Church History (Ret.) Union Theological Seminary, Richmond, Virginia

"Neil Wyrick's The Spiritual Abraham Lincoln should be read by anyone attempting to understand the man who was probably the most complex person to ever hold the office of president of the United States. Dr. Wyrick is intent on demonstrating that the spirituality so often expressed in Lincoln's writings and speeches was not merely lip service to a Deity, but rather expressions of a profound faith in a real God. It was this faith that provided the wisdom, compassion, insight and sometimes steel that Lincoln would need in full measure as he led the United States through the Civil War. Dr. Wyrick's clear and unpretentious style of presentation is very much in keeping with the character ofhis subject, and in so doing, Wyrick makes his point very well that Lincoln, his beliefs, and the faith that formed them, are as relevant to a troubled America in 2004 as they were in 1863."

Daniel Allen Butler, author of "Unsinkable"; The Full Story of the RMS Titanic, The Lusitania and The Age o f Cunard

Two stores faced each other across a very busy street.  Their owners were in constant competition with each other.  One day, the owner of one store put out a sign that read – If you want it, we have it!

Almost immediately the other owner put out a sign –If we don’t have it, you don’t need it!
