You have but one life to live so live
it. Give it your best. Raise rumbles of joy from exploring new ideas
and new opportunities. Never forget that
the secret of success is learning how to fail because failure is a teacher and
when you succeed what greater joy?
Who do you love and do you keep it a secret? Husband...would your wife appreciate a note
that said "I love you" inside the egg container she uses to fix your
breakfast or a note of thanks to you from your wife inside your tool box as you
prepare to fix that broken "whatever" you promised to fix.
In a year's time there are dozens and
more opportunities to say and show your love...(and yes saying is nicer still
on top of that doing) "I love you child of mine" (friend of mine)
(mate of mine).
How do you SPEND your time? Which means what are you PURCHASING with
your time? Lazy...you are purchasing
nothing for you are earning nothing.
Busy with dreams and deeds...ah good things come of effort...if nothing
more than a stronger body, mind or soul.
Would you do something for me.
Go to your computer and check out your bank balance. Why?
Because you will find that $86,400 was deposited one
minute after midnight to your bank account.
And the same thing will happen tonight in
preparation for tomorrow...and it will happen every day for the rest of your
life...as has happened every day since the day you were born.
Oh..please pardon this
old preacher...I was making an analogy...I meant to say 86,400 seconds have
been and are being deposited each and every day of your life...and they are
yours to spend however you will...and when the day is gone you cannot go back
and make different choices on how you spent them...and before you are all the
things you have spent them on...good well meaning purchases...wasted
purchases...but fear not...tomorrow a new deposit will be made in your account
to be spent wherever...however you wish.
And now can we take a bit of these 86,400
seconds to see where you are planning on spending them tomorrow. It's called planning. Some call it goals. A few people call it "a mission."
How
many of those seconds will you spend helping other people...how many helping
self? How many praying to God? How many trying to prove you are the master
of your fate and the captain of your soul?
The boat was filled with day-trippers on the way to the Shetland
islands. Before they left, the young
people laughed at the old skipper as he prayed a departing prayer because. The
day was calm. Why they thought was he
wasting his time?
Before they reached the island it was
calm no more. A sudden storm had arisen
and they all were in terrible fear for their lives.
They came to the Captain and asked him to
join him in prayer.
He responded, "I say my prayers when it's calm. When it's rough I
attend to my ship."
In 1921 Lewis Lawes
became the warden of Sing Sing Prison, located in Ossining, NY, just 30 miles
north of NY City. At that time no prison was tougher than Sing Sing.
But
when Warden Lawes retired 20 years later, Sing Sing had been transformed into a
model penal institution of its time.
Those who studied the system said
credit for the change belonged to Lawes. But when he was asked, he said, “I owe
it all to my wonderful wife, Catherine, who is buried just outside the prison
walls.”
Catherine Lawes was a young mother with 3 small children when her husband became the warden.
Everybody
warned her from the beginning never to set foot inside the prison walls, but
that didn’t stop Catherine!
When the first prison basketball game was held, she went – walking into the prison gym with her 3 small kids, & she sat in the stands with the inmates.
She
said, “My husband is taking care of these men & I believe they will take
care of me.”
She insisted on getting acquainted with them & their records. She discovered one convicted murderer was blind, so she learned Braille & taught him how to read Braille.
Then
Catherine found a deaf-mute in prison. So she went to school to learn how to
communicate with him in sign language.
To many, Catherine Lawes was the epitome of Jesus alive in Sing Sing from 1921-1937. Then she was killed in an automobile accident, & her husband rushed from the prison to his children’s side.
The
next morning Lewis Lawes didn’t come to work, so the acting warden took his
place. It seemed that almost instantly the entire prison had learned what was
wrong.
The following day, her body was resting in a casket in her home, three-quarters of a mile from the prison.
As
the acting warden took his early morning inspection walk he was amazed to see a
large crowd of the toughest, hardest criminals gathered like a herd of animals
at the main gate.
As he came closer he could see tears streaking their faces. Realizing how much they loved Catherine, he said, “All right, men, you can go. Just be sure to check back in!”
Then he ordered the gates opened and a parade of criminals walked, without a guard, three-quarters of a mile to stand in line to pay their final respects to Catherine Lawes.
And every one of them checked back in. Every
one!
If I were
looking for another life to use as a closing illustration for these thoughts on
utilizing to the utmost the gift of life...would
I be able...could I be able to use yours?
