Someone asked a man, "What are you so worried about?" He said, "A few years ago I went home one day and my wife was whistling "Tea for Two." Shortly thereafter we had twins. The next year I went home and she was watching a The Three Musketeers on television. Shortly thereafter we had triplets." They said, "So why are you worried now?" He said, "Last night I went home and she was reading the book The Birth of a Nation."

Some folk will worry if they have a reason and others even if they don't...they'll find one...then they become as worried as a centipede with athlete’s foot who has also just been asked to put his best foot forward.

My advice and the advice of anyone who does not want to run away from a magnificent eternal truth.  Do not be afraid of tomorrow; for God is already there. ~Author Unknown

Commenting on our anxiety over anxiety one philosophical humorist wrote "We experience moments absolutely free from worry. These brief respites are called panic."

One thing is for sure...no one engages in a study program on how to worry more than they have presently achieved.  Still, our minds unleash their negativity and we waste so much precious energy in finding reasons to burden ourselves...and therefore in a self hurt program we become our own worst enemy.

       So what to do?

Well, perhaps sin less.  Really?  Well, yes.  For the burden of sin carries with it many worry stains and strains.

First, we know we are not pleasing God and most likely not ourselves.  This uneasiness with our hopefully brief encounters with evil (sin will not get nominated for sainthood) does cause worry.

Will we commit the sin again?  And worry about the fact we committed the sin once again when we had decided we wouldn't anymore.

And our sense of satisfaction during our sinful times...not too high.

I'm not really a Mr. Fixit but I have been known to put together a model airplane or boat and in so doing I learned what such hobbies will do.  They totally immerse you in planning and follow through.  Then there isn't much brain power left over for worrying or anything else while working on their completion.

In short, adopt the NO TIME FOR WORRY way of living.  Make a list of things to do which does not include sitting around doing nothing and moping.  Join a bowling league, fix the back steps, paint the garage, start a garden...and yes, then, let me say it again allow NO TIME FOR WORRY.

May I ask you a question?  Are you one of the "worried wells."  It's a term some doctors have for people who are beat down and torn up by a host of imaginary ills...when in reality they are quite healthy.

Worry is wearying which is why worry coincides with increased smoking and drinking and over eating and even drugs which increases health problems which increases worry problems.

It does say something about self discipline being a good factor in lessening worry...by creating less things to actually have to worry about.

You know what worry is?  It's like sitting in a rocking chair...a lot of back and forths with no forward progress.

And selfishness or selflessness.  "Me centered" is another way of putting it.  The more you or I are "me centered" the more we worry about what is happening to us rather than comparing what is happening to all the millions of others around the world.

The Apostle Paul wrote “Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.” Philippians 4:6  And there it is...the truth we know...the truth we pursue...and cannot pursue too much.

I know that for myself I shout my thanksgiving the loudest when I have the least to be thankful for.  For me it works...and it works for others too..

Priorities.  When God is first then things we are worrying about come in second.  They are still there but against a backdrop of God and His kingdom.  Or as Jesus speaks in Matthew 6:33, “But seek first His kingdom and righteousness..."

In JOHN 10: 10b Jesus said...I have come that you may have life and have it to the full.”  Read this over and then read it over again and then once again.  Notice something that happens as you read it...at the moment of reading you are worrying less.  The very affirmation of repetition has its effect.

At the very least...this exercise can slow the momentum of worry.

That's right...there are stages of worry...and each stage has to be assaulted and dealt with and learned from and then you and  your worries laid faithfully before the throne of your loving God.

Do you have a replacement program in place or at least in progress.  Have you been working decently hard by replacing worry with Prayer?  The power of and the practice of replacing the power and practice of worry.

One seven-year-old daughter was thrilled when her dad took her to Disney World for the first time. She headed straight for Space Mountain. The dad worried that the roller coaster would be too scary for her, but she insisted.
To her delight, they rode it twice.
The next year they returned to the Magic Kingdom, and the daughter, now eight, again dragged the dad to Space Mountain. As they stood in line, though, the dad could see her soberly studying the signs that warn about the ride's speed.
"Dad," she said, "I don't think I want to go."
The dad then asked her why she would be nervous when she had enjoyed herself so much the last time.
She replied, "This year, I can read."

Sometimes we get too smart for our good.  We read and read and are over stimulated by information overload and anxiety grows and grows and the problems of life are no bigger...only in our minds.

A ninety-five year old woman at the nursing home received a visit from one of her fellow church members.

"How are you feeling?" the visitor asked.

"Oh," said the lady, "I'm just worried sick!"

"What are you worried about, dear?" her friend asked. "You look rather well and healthy today. Are they taking good care of you here?"

"Oh, yes, they’re taking very good care of me."

"Are you in any pain?" she asked.

"No, I’m not in any pain at all."

"Well then, what are you worried about?" her friend asked again.

The lady leaned back in her rocking chair, sighed a heavy sigh, then slowly explained her major worry. "Every close friend I ever had has already died and gone on to heaven. I'm afraid they're all wondering where I went."

Margaret McCordie of the University of

Wisconsin , conducted a survey on WORRYING.

The results of her survey concluded the following.........

-40% of our worries are over things that never

happened.

-30% of our worries are over things that happened

in the past that we couldn’t change with all the

worrying in the world.

-12% of our worries are over imaginary health

problems.

-10% of our worries are over petty, insignificant

issues.

-This leaves 8% of the things we worry about are issues we can actually do something about.

So play this percentage game...it certainly lessens your worries because it increases a host of things you no longer have to worry about.

MATTHEW 6: 34 "Therefore, do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own."

Stop being a futurist.  It's exhausting.  In other words prepare for tomorrow (healthy health habits and financial planning and...) to a certain degree... but then don't keep worrying about your preparations.

I saw a man walking down the street yesterday and plastered across his back were the words "What If?"  Actually I did see a man walking down the street yesterday and I know him and he could have has the words "What if?" plastered across his back...for they would define him...he has never found a worry that he didn't want to adopt.

And I pray for him...and I love him as a brother in Christ...for he is a worry wart and he knows it.

Today is such a special gift of God.  So many blessings in it ...starting with the beauty of the dawn if you took the time go outside and greet and meet it...and that song bird in the distance or tht snow flake falling...or the voice of that child or grandchild...and oh how the numbers of blessings fall over themselves...and what are focusing on...what are you focusing on?

"For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. John 3:16

It isn't that you haven't heard it and don't believe it...but it is good to pull it up from your memory and repeat it to yourself.

With all of the above...the fact God loves you is the truest best antidote for worry.  Held in his hand and heart...believing it...therein lies the abundance of truth from that place with an abundance of eternity to back it up.

A new quote below from Rev. Wyrick's 9th book THE SPIRITUAL ABRAHAM LINCOLN (read the rave reviews below the quote)

Lincoln had seen a house of cards about to fall and realized how it could establish a precedent that would truly destroy what the Founding Fathers had created.

Divided by two, in short time it might well have become a division of three.

The northeast, once not sure if it even wanted to be part of the original thirteen colonies, might then have pulled out.

A few years down the road, some state in the Confederacy, unhappy with the new uniting, might have done the same.  Bad habits come easily and are slow to leave.

"Positive, powerful utterances...skillfully enhancing our understanding and appreciation of Lincoln while revealing the Divine source of his strength."

Lt. Colonel C.A. Olsen (Ret.) Asbury College (Professor Ret.)

"The Spiritual Abraham Lincoln is an extremely well written book that investigates what might be termed the spiritual side of President Lincoln. It's both scholarly and very readable. I came away impressed at Mr. Wyrick's portrayal of the President and with an altered and enlarged vision of the man:'

William Hoffman, Award winning fiction writer; author of Blood and Guile, and Wild Thorn

"Wyrick has authored a wonderful examination of the spirituality of one of American history's most devoutly religious leaders...a pleasant and readable book that has a rich depth of information."

              Maynard Pittendreigh Presbyterian minister

"When it comes to invoking religion in support of any of their decisions, politicians need to sit at the feet of Abraham Lincoln. Reinhold Niebuhr once called him 'America's greatest theologian.' Why so great? Because he invariably distinguished between human works and the works of the Almighty. As Wyrick says, 'He wore the mantle of humility easily: because he was more impressed with what God was doing in the world than with what he, president of the United States in the midst of an awful crisis, was doing. That is why in his last major speech he distinguished between both human causes in the Civil War and the Almighty's 'own purposes.' Lincoln would have agreed that it is better to leave God-talk out of politics than to decorate human proposals with divinity. This is a book for our American time. Through his careful study of Lincoln's career, Wyrick compels us to remember that piety belongs in politics only when piety transcends politics."

       Dr. Donald W. Shriver

Emeritus professor at Union Theological Seminary in New York. Author of An Ethic for Enemies: Forgiveness in Politics

"V. Neil Wyrick's fine work allows the reader to appreciate Abraham Lincoln's Christian commitment and his prophetic role in American history. Should have a wide readership."

James H. Smylie Professor of Church History (Ret.) Union Theological Seminary, Richmond, Virginia

"Neil Wyrick's The Spiritual Abraham Lincoln should be read by anyone attempting to understand the man who was probably the most complex person to ever hold the office of president of the United States. Dr. Wyrick is intent on demonstrating that the spirituality so often expressed in Lincoln's writings and speeches was not merely lip service to a Deity, but rather expressions of a profound faith in a real God. It was this faith that provided the wisdom, compassion, insight and sometimes steel that Lincoln would need in full measure as he led the United States through the Civil War. Dr. Wyrick's clear and unpretentious style of presentation is very much in keeping with the character ofhis subject, and in so doing, Wyrick makes his point very well that Lincoln, his beliefs, and the faith that formed them, are as relevant to a troubled America in 2004 as they were in 1863."

Daniel Allen Butler, author of "Unsinkable"; The Full Story of the RMS Titanic, The Lusitania and The Age o f Cunard

How can we keep our faith from being a weak and fruitless thing?  How can we not be foolish little men and women groveling in the dark shadows of overeager egos.

Well, first we must do more than just pray.  We must believe in our own prayers.

A QUOTE FROM THOUGHTS POSTED ON MY OTHER BLOG WYRICK'S WRITINGS ENTITLED

Two stores faced each other across a very busy street.  Their owners were in constant competition with each other.  One day, the owner of one store put out a sign that read – If you want it, we have it!

Almost immediately the other owner put out a sign –If we don’t have it, you don’t need it!

A QUOTE FROM THOUGHTS POSTED ON MY OTHER BLOG WYRICK'S WRITINGS ENTITLED

WHO ARE YOU?

NO…WHOSE ARE YOU?

Who are you?  Whose are you?

You influence and are influenced according to the answer you give.

Are you are the flavor of the month because you are determined to be like everyone else no matter what?  If so, consider being more independent in our thinking and actions...because God wants you to grow up.

It may be easier being someone's shadow but wouldn't you really rather be a sun.

QUOTE FROM THOUGHTS  POSTED ON WYRICK'S WRITINGS ENTITLED "Who Are You?  Whose Are You?"

This is an old quote, and a romantic one as well but, nevertheless, can anyone say of you, “I love you not because of who you are, but because of who I am when I am with you.

QUOTE FROM THOUGHT PIECE POSTED ON WYRICK'S WRITINGS ENTITLED

" WHEN A NATION STRAYS TOO FAR FROM BEING MORAL IT IS WELL ON IT'S WAY TO BECOMING A MESS

        James 4:17

To him therefore who knows to do good, and doesn’t do it, to him it is sin.

Someone once said: “A belief is what you hold, a conviction is what holds you!”

So what holds you, constructs you, leads you with a push when needed?

Quotes POSTED ON WYRICK'S WRITING ENTITLED WHO ARE YOU?

NO…WHOSE ARE YOU?

In a Peanuts cartoon strip Peppermint Patty is shown talking to Charlie Brown.

“Guess what, Chuck? It’s the first day of school and I got sent to the principal’s office.

And it’s your fault!”

Charlie Brown responds, “My fault? How could it be my fault? Why do you say everything is my fault?”

To which she declares, “You’re my friend, aren’t you, Chuck? You should have been a better influence on me.”

In the comics, it’s funny… but in real life it’s much more complicated.
