I say some because to find it 100% simply isn't going to happen
on planet earth.
However, from personal experience I
affirm that an unbelievable calm can settle in under the worst of experiences
when one lets go and lets God.
To
name two... (for those of you who have not visited this site that often)... two
such times in my own life (and
yes there have been other accidents and illnesses)...one... a paralyzed arm (it largely recovered) and a broken hip requiring
replacement...I was remarkably unbothered by it all...I maintained a "wish
it hadn't happened but it could certainly have been worse" attitude on a
regular day by day basis most of the time.
How?
1.
(Philippians
4:6-7) "Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and
supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God. And
the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and
minds through Christ Jesus.)
Pure and
simple...I overwhelmed heaven and myself
with positive prayers of thanksgiving.
Then while some impairment in the arm continued it largely settled down
to behaving quite nicely.
And as for the hip. Every day (it been 17 months now) it gets
better and people do die from broken hips.
2. I stay busy. I don't want to pay rent on the Devil's
workshop. So yes...busy fills up my mind
and my energy with positive vibes as against sitting around moaning and
groaning about my misfortunes.
3. Grief.
Lost a spouse. Loss of health. When Alfred Lord Tennyson lost
his most intimate friend, Arthur Hallam he wrote: "I must lose myself in
action, lest I wither in despair."
4. There is
a bumper sticker out there that ought to adorn every Christians care. It reads:,
"No Jesus, No peace"!
"Know Jesus, Know Peace."
"No Jesus, No peace"!
"Know Jesus, Know Peace."
Or as Jesus himself said, "Peace I leave with you; my
peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your
hearts be troubled and do not be afraid." (John 14:27)
5. There is a
certain special peace that comes from having enough self control to choose to
go on God control. Enough wisdom to know
what you ought to do and doing it.
6. In 1972, the UNCF
partnered with the Ad Council to launch a public service advertising campaign
encouraging Americans to support the fund. The campaign slogan, "A Mind is
a Terrible Thing To Waste,"
So
don't waste it. Fill up the tank of the
mind with good godly positive thoughts and admonitions to live a good
life. Goodness really does pay off. There is something about a constant effort to
build a solid relationship with God that is stabilizing and strengthening all
at the same time.
7. When is the
last time you gave to someone the gift of forgiveness? There is such a special peace in practicing
that particular charity.
8. Are you often
angry at someone or about something? Do
you carry a chip on your shoulder that is constantly hovering on the edge? Do you feed your insecurities by imagining
that people are saying bad things about you when in reality they are probably
not necessarily saying anything good or bad?
Are you the CEO of a fear factory that is in 24 hour day production
mode? Are you a nagger who begins by
nagging yourself and from there anyone is fair game?
Then
you are your own worst enemy. Therefore
work harder at being your own best friend.
Force yourself to say something nice to and about someone every
day. If you're already doing
it..good. If not...start.
Force...and if
it isn't an ingrown habit force is the right word...force yourself to think a
selfless thought and do a selfless deed.
It will put a glow on you will not be able to believe.
You
get the message and if you don't need to get it because you already have
it...pass it on.
9. Bad things will happen. Don't let this truth ruin your day but do let
it have you prepared when "whatever" does happen. I am accident prone. I am very creative when it comes to breaking,
bruising or spraining various portions of my anatomy. I could let it get me down. Instead, when it happens I say, "Oh, so
that is what was going to happen that did just happen"... laugh, medicate
or ice, visit a doctor and go on with living.
10. Mind, body and
spirit. You and I are all three in a
wonderful magical amalgamation put together by Almighty God. Therefore we must lift our spirits by prayer,
lift weights with our arms or move our legs further than from one chair to the
next and study both Bible and other books to exercise our minds.
Then with this
triple improvement program we will find an ever increasing peace.
