Will Rogers once
said, “Congress is so strange. A man gets up to speak
and says nothing, nobody listens and then everybody disagrees.”
But not just in politics... and how will we ever learn anything when all we are seeking
is an echo of our own opinions.
Wisdom.
We all want it but there is a price to pay. The price of intense focused listening or
reading or paying attention to an educational tape or....staying alert to any
and all forms of communication.
How many parents
really listen to their children?
How many children really listen to their
parents?
We pray and
we expect God to listen to us....how well are we listening to his word?
Have you ever thought what it must be
like for God to have all these people on earth not paying any attention to his
commandments?
Solomon
depicts wisdom as a woman walking through a noisy street, through crowded
market places and at busy intersections trying to get people’s attention -Proverbs 1:20-21
But
in search of wisdom what do we so often do...with our minds made up and
our prejudices polished and our excuses exercised to be able to work at full force...we elude wisdom as if it were a plague.
There are just so many other distractions.
It
certainly isn't that we think we are smarter than God...well...except for a few
exceptions that come to mind...it is that sometimes man is too busy...too busy
for God? Well, yes!
People
really don't want wisdom because wisdom requires a special kind of thinking that asks piercing questions and stays around for answers.
Look
at some people and say "Think about it." And they, if honest, will
apply..."I don't want
to think about it. It makes my head
hurt."
It is the
reason we mock more often than we meditate.
And
people don't want to be wrong...therefore they don't to place themselves in
wisdoms way...it may make them change their mind ...and the very thought makes
them feel bad...so here comes wisdom and there goes thinking...and
rationalization hops on board.
What is
wisdom composed of?
Knowledge
and understanding.
And
then the ability and willingness to mix the two which produces a completely new
insight.
Are you a
wise man or woman? Do you seek counsel
or do you only give it? There is a difference...all the difference in
the world.
For
wisdom...Go to the experts after realizing you are not an expert at everything.
I know a lot these days about a lot of things because I visit Google on
a regular basis. But I really don't try to tell my doctor or my mechanic what
to do when I need repair help in these two areas.
If you
want God's wisdom is it wise to seek advice of the wicked?
It's go to the expert time again.
Sin gets
people in trouble. It always has. It always will.
Do you ever approach sin with the attitude that you are different? If so...is that wisdom?
The
wisdom of God will help you to better get along with people.
There I said it...what you already knew...that loving God and being in awe
of God...and taking your relationships with other people to God...and loving
those people even when they are not being lovable...it is all makes sense.
What is
wisdom? If God is not in the answer then
the answer then the answer is worth very little...it takes some folks awhile to learn this but
when...despite there fighting the truth...they find this food for their
soul....well...let me tell you a story.
The
story is told of a man who wanted to see 18th century Evangelist
George Whitefield preach but did not want to listen to his message.
George Whitefield preach but did not want to listen to his message.
Deliberately
putting fingers in both ears, he watched the great preacher without listening
to a word he said.
But a
stubborn fly landed on his nose, no matter what he did, he could not shake him
off.
He
unplugged his ears long enough to shoo the fly away, and in those brief
seconds, Whitefield proclaimed loudly, “Him who has ears to hear, let him
hear!” The amazing timing of it so intrigued the man
that he listened to the rest of Whitefield’s sermon and when the service was
over he had found the Lord.
Do
you want to live in a world of weeds? That is a pretty good
description of what sin is...and cutting them down or trying to stamp them out
in your heart or your soul is a good beginning but it takes something else...something
to fill the vacuum ...else wise they will just grow back.
That's
right...plant a garden...a
garden filled with the wisdom of God and the flowers of faith in God...and the
beauty of the message of God...and the weeds will get the message.
What is Godly
wisdom? It is Godly wisdom with no attempt at human
override.
Wisdom or
folly? What a choice! One would think that any and all in mankind
would make the proper and prudent choice.
Are you a
repeater? Repeating over and over again in your head
and heart the wisdom words of God? If so...you are very wise...and getting more
so.
I'm a
musician. I love harmony. I obviously abhor discord. So why would I or anyone else chose anything
or anyone that did not does not lead to the throne of grace.
And I say
this from a patella position...from
a kneeling position...from a humble position that prays any arrogance within me
shrivel and die...and I pray that these thoughts or some very much like them
are your thoughts too.
And
speaking of arrogance just remember "You don't have to be listed in Who's
Who to know what's what."

A new quote below from
Rev. Wyrick's 9th book THE SPIRITUAL ABRAHAM LINCOLN (read the rave reviews below the quote)
It was late summer in 1864 when Sherman’s army captured Atlanta. Ten weeks later, from this jumping off
point, 60,000 men began a march through the
heart of Georgia
to the ocean. Destruction of everything
in between was the goal. Homes and almost every other standing
building were sacked with appalling efficiency until what had once been
beautiful was utterly destroyed and forlorn.
Delivered by some men who did so with regret and by others who had lost
their last vestige of kindness.
It was Sherman following his own instructions,
“…modern wars are not won simply by defeating armies, but by destroying the
ability to wage war – wreck railroads, burn fields, eradicate all economic
resources – war is not glory – war is hell – and every man, woman and child
must learn the lesson quickly.”
"Positive,
powerful utterances...skillfully enhancing our understanding and appreciation
of Lincoln while revealing the Divine source of his strength."
Lt.
Colonel C.A. Olsen (Ret.) Asbury College (Professor Ret.)
"The Spiritual Abraham Lincoln is
an extremely well written book that investigates what might be
termed the spiritual side of President Lincoln. It's both scholarly and very
readable. I came away impressed at Mr. Wyrick's portrayal of the President and
with an altered and enlarged vision of the man:'
William Hoffman, Award winning fiction writer; author of Blood and Guile, and
Wild Thorn
"Wyrick has authored a wonderful
examination of the spirituality of one of American history's most devoutly
religious leaders...a pleasant and readable book that has a rich depth of
information."
Maynard Pittendreigh Presbyterian
minister
"When it comes to invoking religion in support
of any of their decisions, politicians need to sit at the feet of Abraham
Lincoln. Reinhold Niebuhr once called him 'America's greatest theologian.' Why
so great? Because he invariably distinguished between human works and the works
of the Almighty. As Wyrick says, 'He wore the mantle of humility
easily: because he was more impressed with what God was doing in the world than
with what he, president of the United States in the midst of an awful crisis,
was doing. That is why in his last major speech he distinguished between both
human causes in the Civil War and the Almighty's 'own purposes.' Lincoln would
have agreed that it is better to leave God-talk out of politics than to
decorate human proposals with divinity. This is a book for our American time.
Through his careful study of Lincoln's career, Wyrick compels us to remember
that piety belongs in politics only when piety transcends
politics."
Dr.
Donald W. Shriver
Emeritus professor at Union Theological Seminary in New York.
Author of An Ethic for Enemies: Forgiveness in Politics
"V. Neil Wyrick's fine work allows the reader to appreciate Abraham
Lincoln's Christian commitment and his prophetic role in American history.
Should have a wide readership."
James
H. Smylie Professor
of Church History (Ret.) Union Theological Seminary, Richmond, Virginia
"Neil
Wyrick's The Spiritual Abraham Lincoln should be read by anyone attempting to understand the man who was probably
the most complex person to ever hold the office of president of the United States.
Dr. Wyrick is intent on demonstrating that the spirituality so often expressed
in Lincoln's writings and speeches was not merely lip service to a Deity, but
rather expressions of a profound faith in a real God. It was this faith that
provided the wisdom, compassion, insight and sometimes steel that Lincoln would
need in full measure as he led the United States through
the Civil War. Dr. Wyrick's clear and unpretentious style of presentation is
very much in keeping with the character ofhis subject, and in so doing, Wyrick
makes his point very well that Lincoln, his beliefs, and the faith that formed
them, are as relevant to a troubled America in 2004 as they were in 1863."
Daniel Allen Butler, author
of "Unsinkable"; The Full Story of the RMS Titanic, The
Lusitania and The Age o f Cunard

is no other organization in the world like the church. It is a breed unto itself. It is a congregation of sinners, not a
country club for saints. To become a

A QUOTE FROM THOUGHTS POSTED ON MY

Two stores faced each other across a very
busy street. Their owners were in constant competition
with each other. One day, the owner of
one store put out a sign that read – If
you want it, we have it!
Almost immediately the other owner put out a
sign –If we don’t have it, you don’t
need it!

WHO ARE
YOU?
NO…WHOSE ARE YOU?
Who are you? Whose are
you?
You influence and are influenced
according to the answer you give.
Are you are the flavor of the month because
you are determined to be like everyone else no matter what? If so, consider being more independent in our
thinking and actions...because God wants you to grow up.
It may be easier being someone's shadow but
wouldn't you really rather be a sun.
QUOTE FROM THOUGHTS POSTED ON WYRICK'S WRITINGS ENTITLED "Who
Are You? Whose Are You?"
This is an old quote, and a romantic one
as well but, nevertheless, can anyone say of you, “I love you not because of who you are,
but because of who I am when I am with you.”

POSTED ON WYRICK'S WRITING ENTITLED WHO
ARE YOU?
NO…WHOSE ARE YOU?
In a Peanuts
cartoon strip Peppermint Patty is shown talking to Charlie Brown.
“Guess what, Chuck? It’s the first day
of school and I got sent to the principal’s office.
And it’s your fault!”
Charlie Brown responds, “My fault? How
could it be my fault? Why do you say everything is my fault?”
To which she declares, “You’re my
friend, aren’t you, Chuck? You should have been a better influence on me.”
In the comics, it’s funny… but in real life it’s much more
complicated.
