Yes...praise
must be earned...else it become a hollow victory for deceit...but if
earned...to deny it is a sin against your own credibility.
There are those who are proud of their
ability to criticize and wear their reputation like a badge of honor.
They denigrate and destroy husbands or
wives or children or employees with a kind of consummate glee. They take what if done with patient love can
be a plus and turn it into a vice that rips and tears and add to an army of the
insecure.
I still remember one young person saying to me one
day, "Mom thinks I'm no good so I might as well live up to the reputation
she thinks I deserve."
Have you ever
said, "But I criticize them for their own good." And sometimes it works out well that way but
since few can handle criticism it is a balancing act that should be approached
slowly and carefully.

35 A good man brings good things
out of the good stored up in him, and an evil man brings evil things out of the
evil stored up in him. 36 But I tell
you that everyone will have to give account on the day of judgment for every
empty word they have spoken.
There it
is...it could hardly be more clear. A
sarcastic gem (or at least the giver of it calls it so) that is really a verbal
knife wound. An evil verbal knife
wound...call it what it is.
How often have you
been guilty of a criticism gone bad? We
all have. Let's establish that fact.
The man was discussing with his doctor
his wife's hearing problem. "How
can I get her to admit she needs a hearing aid?
“I’ll tell you what you need to do,” his
doctor replied. When you get home peek your head through the door and ask,
“Honey, what’s for dinner?”
“If she doesn’t answer, go into the
living room and say, “Honey, what’s for dinner,”
Then walk into the kitchen and ask,
“Honey, what’s for dinner?” “If she still doesn’t answer walk right up behind
her and say, “Honey, what’s for dinner?
Then you will be able to convince her
that she needs a hearing aid.
“Great! I think that will work.”
So he repeats the question as he goes through the house.
“Great! I think that will work.”

No answer any of the times.
Then he walks right up behind his wife
and speaks directly into her ear. “Honey, what’s for dinner?”
She turns around with a complete loss of patience SHOUTS, “For the fourth time, I said WE WERE HAVING SPAGHETTI!!!”

There is something about we human beings that causes
us time and time again to criticize in others a fault that lays heavily within
ourselves.
Criticism with Christian love is
obviously where I am aiming. The knowing
when to speak up and when to shut up and how to speak a negativism in such a
way it produces fruit rather than rotten apples.
Perhaps the
best place to begin is the swords "all have sinned and come short of the
glory of God." In short, "I've
noticed you seem to have the same
problem I have..." and then name the problem and how you are trying to
handle it.
Some things to do?
Say things such as "It's a kind of "you've made a mistake but join the
crowd. More than one of us in the office
made that mistake at the beginning."
Are you angry at a mistake someone has
made and are actually looking forward to chewing them out. Cool it. You are trying to cure not crush. And watch that tone of voice...if it drips
with sarcasm or seethes with anger It
will kill everyone within in range...including you.
When you criticism.
SMILE. It relaxes everyone
including you.
Criticize major
errors; Ignore minors. Do you expect
change? What kind of change?
Can you
suggest a positive way of doing something rather than criticizing the way
something is being done?
Beware of being judgmental. There is a difference.
Think how you
would want to be criticized if the circumstances were reversed.
I close the
same way I began these thoughts.
