When the great evangelist Dwight L. Moody entered a room and then
left, people would actually speak in hushed and muted tones.
He may never have said a word about Christ. Most of the time he did, but not always.
That, however, is not the point.
No less a man than Woodrow Wilson relates how it happened one time to
him.
This future President of the United States was in a barber shop
getting his hair cut and D. L. Moody entered.
He tells how the presence of this man completely committed to
Christ affected the room. “He had come
on the same errand as myself - simply to have his hair cut.
He sat in the chair next to mine and every word he uttered
showed a complete personal interest in the man who was serving him.
“In no time at all, though he was not evangelizing, it was as if I
were attending an evangelistic service because a man of pure love and concern
was in that barber chair. I purposely lingered after he left to study the
singular effect that his presence had brought upon the men in the barber
shop. No one knew who he was except me,
but they knew something had elevated their thoughts. And when I left it was as if I were leaving a
house of worship.”
I call it spiritual ambience, and I have felt it a few times in
my life when some people I have met have had the light of Christ in them. They really were different. Not because perhaps they wore a cross around
their neck or pinned one to their lapel.
It was just that it was so obvious that they were not judgmental and
angry and petty and mean, as so often we humans can be. They were…they are…well, Jesus puts it the
way it is, “Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness. But will have the
light of life.” (John 8:12)
You want to know what a saint is? A saint is a stained glass window. Why? Because a saint is a person the Light
shines through.
There aren't many saints. I certainly am not one but I aspire to being
better rather than moving in the direction of worse. I am grateful for forgiveness but pray that
daily I will have less to forgive.
I know I will feel better being in charge
of sunshine than darkness, chasing the commandments by which I try to live
rather than running from them because I allow temptations to get in the way.
So...I try not to borrow from the future
worries I have placed there to the detriment of myself and those who live with
me. I pray regularly to recognized the
difference between worries and concerns.
I saw a bumper sticker on a car
yesterday. It read, "Why pray when
you can worry." and I realized that for many this isn't a joke.
Of course, to counteract such bumper
sticker nonsense, worn in humor or not, I remind myself of what Corrie Ten Boom said,
"Worry does not empty tomorrow of its sorrow, it empties today of its
strength."
I
admit I am not superman and therefore try to go to bed on time rather than any
old time. Tired Christians don't give
out as much light.
I carry a one man choir with me. In my head rather than outloud I sing songs
such as "Turn your eyes upon Jesus, look full in His
wonderful face; and the things of earth will grow strangely dim, in the light
of His glory and grace." And yes, my soul hears the words and puts me more
in tune with my God.
I pray for a grateful heart for it will show on my face and you will hear it in my voice. I pray not to forget my blessings so that when mealtime approaches and I say, "I'm hungry" that remind myself I don't really have any idea what hunger is.

I remind myself each time I walk in or
out my front door that in places like Syria they no longer have a front door.
Nor do I neglect favorite scriptures such
as (Psalm
1:1-3) "Blessed is the man who does not walk in the counsel of the wicked or
stand in the way of sinners or sit in the seat of mockers. But his delight is
in the law of the LORD, and on his law he meditates day and night. He is like
a tree planted by streams of water, which yields its fruit in season and whose
leaf does not wither. Whatever he does prospers."
I learned a long time ago that it is the
old two steps forward one step backwards bit when it comes to readying our soul
for the presence of the Holy Spirit. But
I learned that progress is a reality and I have known so many good folk who
never give up on their Christian goals...and how persistence continues to pay
off.
And I
wish the for you to be a keeper of sunshine thoughts...thoughts about who
Christ is and was and evermore shall be...because by so doing we improve the world
and all therein.
