Aging bothers people at different ages. Some feel ancient at forty and others feel
young and frisky at fifty and continue to feel this way for an even longer
period of time.
Why do some people really have more bounce to the ounce?
Well, maybe it's because the first thing they do when morning
arrives is dust off their wits and reactivate their joints.
What really to
do? Ride
your stationary exercise bike so you won't be stuck with feeling
stationary.
Don't
just
read the newspaper...work at remembering three things that you have read to
share with a friend or family memory...later on...
It's called massaging
the memory and the affect will latch on to other things you may want to
remember as the day goes on...and next thing you will have the habit of working
harder at holding on to things.
It's called activation of mind and body...and oh, yes
perk up with prayer...now you have three important parts of your being
resuscitated and ready to go.
Several
years ago a marathon runner named Herman Silva got confused. Not a good thing to do in a 26 mile race.
He
made a wrong turn and ran 40 yards in the wrong direction.
When
the crowd yelling at him about his mistake finally got through he had two
choices...he could quit...or turn around and make up the difference.
He
turned around and made up the difference and won by two seconds.
That's the kind
of attitude that keep you young long after you aren't anymore.
That pressing on
to win the race ala Paul. That not
giving up because you're too busy getting up.
Do you still read the cartoon page? You ought to...it's good for your insides and
besides some of the cartoons are philosophy lessons as well.
Like the one in THE FAMILY CIRCLE some long while
ago. Billy was speaking to Jeffy and
with a wisdom look on his face he said, "Yesterday is the past, tomorrow
is the future and today is a gift.
That's why they call it the present."
That
kind of attitude will keep you young longer and old slower.
Fact is...let me
make a suggestion...reach out and shake the hand of the Psalmist as a way of
thanking him for the following piece of advice, "This is the day the Lord has made. Let us
rejoice & be glad in it.” ( Psalm 118:24)
Wasting life
is easy. Do little and then less and
work down to nothing. The reward for
this advance of nothingness will then be definitively earned but in a short
time not appreciated.
And boredom will camp on your doorstep
and you will wear a dunce cap for having chosen a style of life not worthy of
who you might have been.
Boredom? Boredom bends your dreams and breaks any
goals into little pieces that float away on every restless wind. And as it happens...one grows prematurely
old...guaranteed!
A little boy once
asked a woman in a wheel chair in a nursing home he was visiting how old she
was. She smiled and answered, "39 and holding." He looked at her
and said, "Well how old would you be if you let go?"
May I answer for
her?
"Younger."
Let go of the
calendar if it has too firm a grip on your thinking. Dance even if you creak because if you don't you'll
be up the creek sooner.
I think I shared
this the other day...I share it again...in
the Fall I will fall in love with Disneyworld all over again. I will
ride the rides and take the journeys of imagination offered and walk until my
feet hurt but my heart sings...and I won't think "I'm 84." No I will think, I am a child of God with an
emphasis on "child" at least for those few days and praise the Lord
that my optimistic spirit is still alive and well.
In short,
don't just accept your older age...prod it with great expectations.
I had someone who
recently was surprised I was still preaching.
Those who know me would have been surprised if I wasn't.
Gosh, John Wesley was still preaching
twice a day when he was 88. I'm still a
kid.
George
Muller, another great evangelist, is said to have traveled 200,000 miles, using
his gift of tongues to preach in seven different languages to an estimated
three million people. Muller's ministry didn't began until the age of 70
and continued for the next 17 years.
You're never
too old to begin. You're never too old
to continue. Anything you set
your heart and head to can be achieved...if on crutches...allow more time...if
stamina has shrunk...do what is required to increase efficiency.
When John Newton,
the writer of 'Amazing Grace,' was old, a friend asked him if his memory had
gotten bad. Newton replied, "Yes, but I remember two things: He
said, I know I'm a great sinner and I know I have a great Savior; and I don't
need to remember much more than that".
What you do
remember from your Bible memory and Christian experiences and stories of your
own personal faith moments...share.
Share with a smile and a glint in your eye and a tremor in your voice
because it means so much to you. Share.
The doctor took
his patient into his office and said, "I have some good news and some bad
news." The patient said, "Give me the good news." The doctor
said, "They’re going to name a disease after you."
If you have
an illness or have sustained an accident try to find some humor in it...the
illness may or may not go away and if it is a broken it may or not heal
completely but...well...first a personal example...
As they
wheeled me toward the operation room to replace my broken hip I looked up at
the doctor and said, "I'm going to write a book or an article on
this experience, I'm going to title it HIP HIP HOORAY."
Some things
in life may deserve more of a HIP HIP HOORAY than others but try to find that
rainbow in the storm...the beauty of a snowflake in a blizzard...or...
(yes...it's fill in the blanks time again).

Everything
that happened in the war was not of blood and pain and hate. The best in man sometimes rises out of the
worst. More than likely the story of
what happened one cold day during the terrible battle of Fredericksburg reached
Abe’s ears and pleased the heart of this forgiving President. It was a dreadful battle that cried out for
some miraculous act of empathy.
A
Sergeant Richard Kirkland of Company E Carolina Regiment made a request of his
commanding officer that was almost denied.
He had looked too long at the tortured, twisted dead and dying men and
could finally stand it no more. He
sought startling permission to take water and aid to those dressed in both Blue
and Gray.
“You
may get a bullet in the back of your head, son,” he was told. The soldier replied that he wanted to go
anyway.
“May God protect you,” said Major General J.
B. Kershaw. A short time later, men on
both sides of this field of agony and despair, watched in awe as the young man vaulted
over a bloodstained stonewall and walked unarmed and seemingly unafraid among
the dead and dying. They saw him kneel
down and cradle a fallen Union soldier in his arms, offer him a drink of water,
rest his head on his knapsack and cover him with his own overcoat. And then move to another soldier nearby. This time it was a Confederate soldier.
Again
and again throughout that long, pale December afternoon, just eleven days
before Christmas, Sergeant Kirkland returned with water until every living
soldier, from both the North and the South, had felt his compassion and
concern.
General Kershaw later wrote that not one
shot was fired during that time. That
never had he heard such silent respect.
“…no doubt,” his pen etched, “all the trumpets of heaven resounded on
this monumental day.”
