Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God.
And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus. (Philippians 4:6-9)

In 1972, the UNCF partnered with the Ad Council to launch a public service advertising campaign encouraging Americans to support the fund. The campaign slogan, "A Mind is a Terrible Thing To Waste,"

And it is...a waste...to fill it with wasteful thoughts.

There are three types of people who come to the front door of your home.  Some knock and you talk with them as they stand outside.  Then they walk away.

Some knock or ring the bell and end up sitting in your living room for awhile but soon they walk away.

And then there are those who do not knock...they live there and they do not walk away.

How of the three how would you describe your God?

And God has a PIECE of your mind...or as a permanent resident gives you PEACE OF MIND.

How many people do you know who seem to have the special peace?  You cannot put your finger on it but they radiate it, respond to life with this peace backing them up, handle adversity with a special strength...are you one of these people...it is there for all of us...

Would you like to have more of this kind of peace?

1.Get the kind of amnesia that causes you to forget hurts and harbor grudges.

          2. Don't feed low self esteem by pumping up your jealousies.

          3. You have a physical problem that can't be changed and it is driving you to constant despair?  Fill your thinking with thoughts of all the things you can do despite the physical problem. (At 84 this old athlete has a number of athletic pursuits I can no longer pursue...but I still have a greater host of things I still can do.  I cannot run but I sure can walk (almost 3 miles every other day.  Before age caught up with me I read  a lot.  Since age caught up with me...I read a lot.  I played the piano...I still play the opinion.  The TV picture is a bit more fuzzy...but I can see and enjoy the TV picture, etc., etc. etc.)

          4.  There are a lot irritating people here in South Florida.  I get great pleasure out of occasionally helping these people trade a trade in a frown for a smile.   Is it something vastly complicated I do?  Not really?  I simply say, "I hope you've had a good day?"  And by so doing they know someone cared enough to ask them.

          5. I saved when I was younger.  I knew that tomorrow was coming.  Procrastination does not feed a bank account so I forced myself not to put off regularly banking for tomorrow.  I did this with physical exercises too and spiritual exercises and it is a comfort to be ahead of the game.

There is a famous scene in Peter Pan.

Peter is in the children’s bedroom; they have seen him fly; and they wish to fly too.

They have tried it from the floor and they have tried it from the beds and the result is failure. "How do you do it?" John ask

And Peter answers: "You just think lovely, wonderful thoughts and they lift you up in the air."

Think Jesus with His kindness and His love bearing sermons and how He dealt the sick and the maimed.  Think of the wisdom of His words on the side of a mountain and His final words from the cross.  Think these positive thoughts and other positive thoughts about His time on earth and what it means for you also living on this earth.

There is peace in these thoughts...overwhelming...it happened...thank you God that it happened thoughts...and such power and peace in the spiritual reminiscing.

Praise the Lord for rightness and get on the same page with this rightness.  Chose where you want to live even if you stumble ere now and then.

Of such is sunshine to sweep away the darkness.

Your peace is uppermost in Jesus mind...it always has been.

Remember the first words He spoke to His disciples after the resurrection?

          "PEACE BE WITH YOU!"

He didn't say "Satisfaction be with you?"  For what will it take to satisfy you?  What satisfied you yesterday or last month or last year?  Is it enough? Do you always want more money or power or a rise in position at work or...is the list of what it will take to satisfy you a list that never stops growing because essentially you are never satisfied?

In short, satisfaction cannot be found...the peace that passeth understanding can.

Take Christmas morn and a little child.  He or she is so satisfied for a day or a somewhat longer period of time and then the object of their satisfaction ends up in a closet or attic never to be thought of again.

What does the Bible say " When I was a child, I talked like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child. When I became a man, I put childish ways behind me. (1 Corinthians 13:11)

Would you be better off if by the help God you could reach a point where you are satisfied with what you have?

Permanent dissatisfaction to you?  Easy to find...just always want MORE...never reach a point in your life where you can say, "I have enough."

          True peace?

Augustine wrote the  answer to the question 1500 years ago in his famous prayer: “You have made us for yourself, and our hearts are restless until they find their rest in you.”

While making money to help finance my Seminary days I briefly sold vacuum cleaners.  The principal behind a vacuum is that nature abhors a vacuum...so you turn on a vacuum cleaner...there is a big empty space and in cleaning up a room you fill it with all kind of trash.

We do that with our lives...we claim we are unhappy because we have empty spots that need filling...and we start filling them...with messy thoughts and messy deeds.

What is our problem today?  We are too often ruled by public opinion than by God.

Giant lines formed by folk trying to find the peace of prosperity...and I am not talking about prosperity of the soul.

I am talking about a me first philosophy that places selfishness on the throne meant for God.

And flames destroy homes and a people stand in their blackened front yards and say what perhaps they have not thought about so deeply until the tragic burning took place. " Well, we have our lives and that is what is important."

And that is indeed important...and they are too important to waste...too important to cry out with a hollow voice   "I am the captain of my fate.  I am the master of my soul."

Peace is not merely a distant goal that we seek but a means by which we arrive at that goal.

There is no other organization in the world like the church.  It is a breed unto itself.  It is a congregation of sinners, not a country club for saints.  To become a member you have to profess your unworthiness.

Everything that happened in the war was not of blood and pain and hate.  The best in man sometimes rises out of the worst.  More than likely the story of what happened one cold day during the terrible battle of Fredericksburg reached Abe’s ears and pleased the heart of this forgiving President.  It was a dreadful battle that cried out for some miraculous act of empathy.

A Sergeant Richard Kirkland of Company E Carolina Regiment made a request of his commanding officer that was almost denied.  He had looked too long at the tortured, twisted dead and dying men and could finally stand it no more.  He sought startling permission to take water and aid to those dressed in both Blue and Gray.

“You may get a bullet in the back of your head, son,” he was told.  The soldier replied that he wanted to go anyway.

“May God protect you,” said Major General J. B. Kershaw.  A short time later, men on both sides of this field of agony and despair, watched in awe as the young man vaulted over a bloodstained stonewall and walked unarmed and seemingly unafraid among the dead and dying.  They saw him kneel down and cradle a fallen Union soldier in his arms, offer him a drink of water, rest his head on his knapsack and cover him with his own overcoat.  And then move to another soldier nearby.  This time it was a Confederate soldier.

Again and again throughout that long, pale December afternoon, just eleven days before Christmas, Sergeant Kirkland returned with water until every living soldier, from both the North and the South, had felt his compassion and concern.

General Kershaw later wrote that not one shot was fired during that time.  That never had he heard such silent respect.  “…no doubt,” his pen etched, “all the trumpets of heaven resounded on this monumental day.”

How can we keep our faith from being a weak and fruitless thing?  How can we not be foolish little men and women groveling in the dark shadows of overeager egos.

Well, first we must do more than just pray.  We must believe in our own prayers.

A QUOTE FROM THOUGHTS POSTED ON MY OTHER BLOG WYRICK'S WRITINGS ENTITLED

Two stores faced each other across a very busy street.  Their owners were in constant competition with each other.  One day, the owner of one store put out a sign that read – If you want it, we have it!

Almost immediately the other owner put out a sign –If we don’t have it, you don’t need it!

A QUOTE FROM THOUGHTS POSTED ON MY OTHER BLOG WYRICK'S WRITINGS ENTITLED

WHO ARE YOU?

NO…WHOSE ARE YOU?

Who are you?  Whose are you?

You influence and are influenced according to the answer you give.

Are you are the flavor of the month because you are determined to be like everyone else no matter what?  If so, consider being more independent in our thinking and actions...because God wants you to grow up.

It may be easier being someone's shadow but wouldn't you really rather be a sun.

QUOTE FROM THOUGHTS  POSTED ON WYRICK'S WRITINGS ENTITLED "Who Are You?  Whose Are You?"

This is an old quote, and a romantic one as well but, nevertheless, can anyone say of you, “I love you not because of who you are, but because of who I am when I am with you.

QUOTE FROM THOUGHT PIECE POSTED ON WYRICK'S WRITINGS ENTITLED

" WHEN A NATION STRAYS TOO FAR FROM BEING MORAL IT IS WELL ON IT'S WAY TO BECOMING A MESS

        James 4:17

To him therefore who knows to do good, and doesn’t do it, to him it is sin.

Someone once said: “A belief is what you hold, a conviction is what holds you!”

So what holds you, constructs you, leads you with a push when needed?

Quotes POSTED ON WYRICK'S WRITING ENTITLED WHO ARE YOU?

NO…WHOSE ARE YOU?

In a Peanuts cartoon strip Peppermint Patty is shown talking to Charlie Brown.

“Guess what, Chuck? It’s the first day of school and I got sent to the principal’s office.

And it’s your fault!”

Charlie Brown responds, “My fault? How could it be my fault? Why do you say everything is my fault?”

To which she declares, “You’re my friend, aren’t you, Chuck? You should have been a better influence on me.”

In the comics, it’s funny… but in real life it’s much more complicated.

QUOTES ABOUT THIS WONDERFUL INSPIRING INFORMATIVE book

STILL RECEIVING RAVE REVIEWS 8 YEARS AFTER IT'S PUBLICATION.

"Positive, powerful utterances...skillfully enhancing our understanding and appreciation of Lincoln while revealing the Divine source of his strength."

Lt. Colonel C.A. Olsen (Ret.) Asbury College (Professor Ret.)

"The Spiritual Abraham Lincoln is an extremely well written book that investigates what might be termed the spiritual side of President Lincoln. It's both scholarly and very readable. I came away impressed at Mr. Wyrick's portrayal of the President and with an altered and enlarged vision of the man:'

William Hoffman, Award winning fiction writer; author of Blood and Guile, and Wild Thorn

"Wyrick has authored a wonderful examination of the spirituality of one of American history's most devoutly religious leaders...a pleasant and readable book that has a rich depth of information."

              Maynard Pittendreigh Presbyterian minister

"When it comes to invoking religion in support of any of their decisions, politicians need to sit at the feet of Abraham Lincoln. Reinhold Niebuhr once called him 'America's greatest theologian.' Why so great? Because he invariably distinguished between human works and the works of the Almighty. As Wyrick says, 'He wore the mantle of humility easily: because he was more impressed with what God was doing in the world than with what he, president of the United States in the midst of an awful crisis, was doing. That is why in his last major speech he distinguished between both human causes in the Civil War and the Almighty's 'own purposes.' Lincoln would have agreed that it is better to leave God-talk out of politics than to decorate human proposals with divinity. This is a book for our American time. Through his careful study of Lincoln's career, Wyrick compels us to remember that piety belongs in politics only when piety transcends politics."

       Dr. Donald W. Shriver

Emeritus professor at Union Theological Seminary in New York. Author of An Ethic for Enemies: Forgiveness in Politics

"V. Neil Wyrick's fine work allows the reader to appreciate Abraham Lincoln's Christian commitment and his prophetic role in American history. Should have a wide readership."

James H. Smylie Professor of Church History (Ret.) Union Theological Seminary, Richmond, Virginia

"Neil Wyrick's The Spiritual Abraham Lincoln should be read by anyone attempting to understand the man who was probably the most complex person to ever hold the office of president of the United States. Dr. Wyrick is intent on demonstrating that the spirituality so often expressed in Lincoln's writings and speeches was not merely lip service to a Deity, but rather expressions of a profound faith in a real God. It was this faith that provided the wisdom, compassion, insight and sometimes steel that Lincoln would need in full measure as he led the United States through the Civil War. Dr. Wyrick's clear and unpretentious style of presentation is very much in keeping with the character ofhis subject, and in so doing, Wyrick makes his point very well that Lincoln, his beliefs, and the faith that formed them, are as relevant to a troubled America in 2004 as they were in 1863."

Daniel Allen Butler, author of "Unsinkable"; The Full Story of the RMS Titanic, The Lusitania and The Age o f Cunard
