Did you know…
That John Calvin, the great writer of the stern Presbyterian Theology had a reputation as a wit.
Or that Dwight L. Moody, one of the greatest evangelist in America could have a fortune as a comedian.
And that Martin Luther once said, “I do not want to go to heaven if God does not understand a good joke.”
Plus, it is interesting to note that Albert Sweitzer, the great medical doctor is known for his humanitarianism. He is not as well known as a man with a great sense of humor.
Indeed, one day, as he and his wife were sitting down to dinner, he in a sepulchral manner said, “You know my dear. We are going to have to stop making up jokes. We are getting older and most become serious…”
At this point he could continue no longer as both broke out in laughter.
And what of one of our founding fathers, Ben Franklin. It has often been jokingly said that one of the reasons he was not asked to write the Declaration of Independence, was because he might attach a couple of jokes.
Indeed, if you or I can laugh at ourselves…now we are truly blessed…for there is no better way to rid ourselves of pomposity when needed.
