Someone once said that God has really given men five gospels, Matthew, Mark, Luke, John, and you. And this is why, YOU and ME need to work hard at liking the unlikable and loving the unlovable.
We all have walked into a room and having circulated about found a few folk who are not very likeable, maybe only one. They major in grim and grimace. They scowl. They may be just shy but they come across as antagonistic. And our feelings are negative and about to get out of hand.
What then to do?
Act as if they are likeable. Treat them as if they are loveable.
If you or I treat some folk like this badly, even if it is no more than just ignoring them…we will only feel more badly toward them.
If we do the good deed of continuing to speak to them, in trying to draw out some good part of them, we will find ourselves feeling less negative to them.
The very fact of positive Christian action will stir up the better part of us.
The more kinder part of us. The more loving part of us. Just as being negative will draw up all the negative parts of us.
It’s a training program, really. Going through positive motions until you more easily find the positive emotion.
Use your imagination? Are they angry because no one treats them well and the reason no one treats them well is because they are always angry. Be the first person that treats them well despite rather than because.
Favoritism! We all practice it. We like someone. We favor them. We don’t like someone. We don’t. This isn’t how Christ said it or meant it to be. The love He wants us to practice is unconditional.
How to do all of this?
Think diamonds. Think diamonds buried deep beneath the earth. Remember that to get them one has to dig deep. Same with some people.
Meet their grim with your grin if you have just met a sober side. Grim to grim won’t produce any positive results. Fact is if you are practicing the habit of always being nice to everyone the next thing you know other people will be in the habit of being nice to you.
Treat EVERYONE as if they are important; no exceptions. Because everyone is important, “God don’t make no junk.”
