The man told his doctor he was constantly being troubled by his conscience and needed some medicine to solve the problem.

“Ah,” replied the doctor, “you want something to increase your will power?”

“No,” answered back the man, “I was thinking of something that would weaken my conscience.”

Can your conscience send you wrong signals? No doubt about that.

If fed the wrong kind of ethical and spiritual food it desperately it fails as a filter. It reaches that point where it can ignore any of the Biblical commandments with consummate ease. Suffering from spiritual malnutrition it shrivels and shrivels until one day there is nothing left to shrivel.

And when that happens; it is not just a matter of not listening to your conscience which surely allows you to live with diminishing expectations. It leads to not listening to the conscience no matter how weak or strong it has become.

And when that happens one becomes a living example of the old joke “He doesn’t listen to his conscience because he never takes advice from a total stranger.”

Titus 1:15 “Unto the pure all things are pure: but unto them that are defiled and unbelieving is nothing pure; but even their mind and conscience is defiled.”
