The weight of hate. The pain of guilt from being unable or
unwilling to forgive in the manner Christ commanded.
Someone hurt you and now you rejoice in seeing them feel a pain
equal or even more than your own.
You shout hurrah when they get their come-uppance?
"Vengeance is mine" saith the
Lord.
And from this point of view let's take a
walk down this rocky road.
Robert Louis Stevenson, in one of his
books, tells of two sisters who never married and living together in the same
house, one day came to a falling out and decided never to speak to each other
again.
Then with a piece of chalk they divided up every area of their house. With a piece of white they drew a line across the sofa. They drew a mark right through the middle of the kitchen, & even the doorways were divided.
The two women lived the rest of their lives imprisoned in bitterness. They refused even to acknowledge each other's presence. With a piece of chalk they marked each other completely out of their lives.

And to what avail?
Is there anyone you will not speak to or have at the least
erased from your from life completely. A
former friend. A family member. What they did was bad but then how can you
response be described.
That line in the sand. That emotional chalk mark that propels you
toward vengeance with a punishment that punishes you as much as your
victim...and I use the term "victim" because it is appropriate.
Charles Swindoll wrote, "As a Christian, I give up my
privilege of hurting you because you hurt me. I give up my privilege of
retaliating, of seeking revenge. I give up my privilege of nursing a grudge.
Matthew 18:21 35.
reads: "Then Peter came to Jesus and asked, ‘Lord, how many times shall I
forgive my brother when he sins against me? Up to 7 times?’ Jesus answered, ‘I
tell you, not 7 times, but 77 times.’
Edwin Markham
was one of the finest poets the world has even known.
But then an old
friend embezzled all his life's savings.
He was 60 years old and dead broke.
His spirit broken too he began to hate and bitterness kidnapped his
thoughts. He raged in the night against
the man who had been his trusted friend.
He had lost
everything and so to replenish his bank account he sat down to write some more
of his poetry. But he couldn't. His mind was frozen with anger and
vengeance.
All he could do was draw
circles over and over again, big circles, little circles, in-between circles.
And then as
he did he began to repeat "I must forgive. I can't even write. I hate this
man so much that it is destroying my life. I must forgive him."
Finally, he poured out all his resentment to God and asked God to cleanse his heart and give him the capacity to forgive that enemy whom once he had trusted

God did,and
Markham said that it felt as though the heavens opened and a flood came and
washed his soul clean of all his hatred.
Then when he
tried writing again, he saw those circles.
Now he wrote his most famous lines, "He drew a circle to shut me out, rebel, heretic, a thing to flout. But love and I had the wit to win. We drew a circle that took him in."
And having sought and acquired the monumental forgiveness required, Edwin Markham began to write poetry the like of which he had never written before.

force about it almost unreal and with it came recognition and wealth.
And now his
earthly wealth was great again but his spiritual emotional wealth was greater.
For he had erased
that mark in the sand.
