At
this time when we are celebrating the greatest gift in the history of
mankind... our Savior Jesus...I thought I would
comment on its opposite...the sickness of greed... that emotional polio that can
suck compassion out of a human being and drive them to obscene levels of
selfishness and the dismantling of their soul.
What is
greed?
Visit
a certain gravesite in England and find the beginning of an answer “She died for the want of things.” Next to
her was a 2nd stone reading, “He died trying to give them to her!”
It is the old truth that we start by possessing and if we
are not careful our possession began to possess us.
The cry of
greed never changes "I want more." and eventually it becomes a
perpetually crying in more ways than one.
We're programmed early to believe "Whoever has the
most toys is the winner." Winner of
what?
What is benevolence?
The elderly
woman had been singing the hymn with great joy.
She grew faint and as she fell hit her head on the edge of the pew.
The EMT crew arrived and began to strap her to a
stretcher in preparation for carrying her down the aisle and out into the
ambulance.
Still
groggy she motioned her daughter to come near.
It was then
she whispered, "My offering is in my purse."
True benevolence is a way of life. It is a gracious spirit that can hold its own
on any day temptation toward greed comes to call. It does not look for excuses not to give
whether it is money, time or effort. It
is a positive force for good...and when it happens the angels sing.
At one time
at the City Temple in London, there was in the congregation a restaurateur
named Emil Mettler, who was a close friend and missions agent of Albert
Schweitzer in Britain.
Mettler would never allow a Christian worker
to pay for a meal in his restaurant but once he did happen to open his cash
register in the presence of a Secretary of the London Missionary Society.
The
Secretary was astonished to see among the bills and coins a six-inch nail.
What was it doing there?
Mettler explained, "I keep this nail with my money to remind me of the price that Christ paid for my salvation and of what I owe Him in return."
Benevolence never looks for excuses to be less
benevolent. Benevolence has its
priorities straight.

THE SPIRITUAL ABRAHAM LINCOLN.
It is little wonder that once the war was over,
wretched memories fed anger loud and long.
Neither side could be proud of some things that happened during the war
or at their many prison camps. The
meanness in some men had multiplied.
They felt their uniforms allowed it.
Andersonville, or Camp
Sumter as it was officially known, in
southwest Georgia
is remembered as one of the worst.
By the end of the war, it had held 50,000
prisoners on a piece of land no larger than twenty-six acres.
Some men had called pits in the ground
their home. During its short
fourteen-month existence, 13,000 soldiers who had survived in battle died in
captivity under the most terrible conditions.
When the war was over the superintendent
was hanged.
