Bethlehem would never be the same again...nor would the world.
How could it be otherwise... for the Son of God would be born on
earth and by this event the word "magnificence" took on new meaning.
By way of a beginning example consider that before Christ was
born babies who were weakly and thereby considered worthless were drowned and
babies of prisoners, thieves, smugglers, pirates and runaway slaves were
abandoned.
Some human lives were equated with that of
animals. Under Christian influence this
and human sacrifice and gladiatorial events were stopped. The world had a long long ways to but a
sliver of heavenly light began to glow on at least a few horizons.
And woman's equality...in Rome before the birth of Christ women and
children were little more than slaves and this did not immediately change...but
change it did...for right is right and Christ is love...and while Godly change
is fought daily by the devil's creed...it still renders hope alive nor will it
die.
By way of example (it
is still too slowly moving this idea that women should be no better than slaves
when they are not paid equal pay for equal work...nevertheless Jesus set the
example with the Samaritan woman and their were women leaders in the early Christian
church...)
And charity...the old Roman world did not
care about the poor. The Christian
church felt otherwise.
And
healthcare? Romans showed little
compassion toward the sick and dying. The
haves had and the have nots simply died.
Under Christian influence the Red Cross, hospitals, nursing, mental
institutions and concerns, all this kind of thinking and follow through grew
from the teachings of a Jesus who said, "love thy neighbor as
thyself."
For example, the
first ecumenical council at Nicea in 325 directed bishops to establish hospices
in every city that had a cathedral. The first hospital was built by St Basil in
Caesarea in 369.
By the Middle Ages hospitals spread across all of Europe
and even beyond. In fact, “Christian hospitals were the world’s first voluntary
charitable institutions”.
Even
education benefited. Public
schools were the idea of Martin Luther and graded education emerged from
Christian influence and Sunday School and colleges such as Harvard and Yale
Then education of the deaf and the blind.
There followed
the attitudes of bringing dignity to work as well as sense of calling. And the Protestant work ethic...and property
rights...and personal freedom...the worth of the individual...this teaching and
truth constantly emphasized.
Liberty and
justice for all...the influence here is obvious.
Rome in Christ day felt that labor was for slaves and
pleasure for the privileged. Their
reasoning was obviously selfish and self centered. There was no place for this kind of thinking
in the teachings of our Lord who spoke of the laborer "being worthy of his
hire." rather than a "thing" to be worked and tired.
And though we in
America and others throughout the world struggle with implementing this
worthiness of every human being and his contribution to society...love for and
compassion toward all people...is nevertheless a fundamental teaching of our
Christ.
In the struggle for moral justice Christianity leads the
parade.
And as nations presently struggle to find democracy,
human rights, equality... again Christ attitude toward the individual rises to
the fore.
So...at this
season of gifts be aware of and be thankful for all the gifts of a better world
that came from the teachings and presence of Christianity.

THE SPIRITUAL ABRAHAM LINCOLN.
It is little wonder that once the war was over,
wretched memories fed anger loud and long.
Neither side could be proud of some things that happened during the war
or at their many prison camps. The
meanness in some men had multiplied.
They felt their uniforms allowed it.
Andersonville, or Camp
Sumter as it was officially known, in southwest
Georgia
is remembered as one of the worst.
By the end of the war, it had held 50,000
prisoners on a piece of land no larger than twenty-six acres.
Some men had called pits in the ground
their home. During its short
fourteen-month existence, 13,000 soldiers who had survived in battle died in
captivity under the most terrible conditions.
When the war was over the superintendent
was hanged.
