There is a story told about a young man
who was extremely absentminded.
In fact he became so forgetful that one night before he went to
sleep...he sat down and wrote himself a note, "Your clothes are on the
chair. Your wallet is on the desk. Your shoes are under the bed and you are in
bed."
The next morning he got up and found his
clothes, his wallet and his shoes but when he looked on the bed he could not
find himself."
Have you found yourself?
Do you know where you are and what you are and who you are? And God willing...you do care.
I do not really know whether it is still
true but airline pilots used to refer to their passengers not as people but as
souls.
Such as, "We have 120 souls on board tonight."
And that afterall is what and who we
are. More than bodies sometimes broken,
sometimes bruised sometimes hobbled by accident or disease.
We are immortal souls.
And that is no small distinction and that
is why against the backdrop of eternity we had better be cocerned with who we
are and where we are in more ways than one.
Can we pause for an imaginary
conversation. Imagine that I come up to
you and say, "I understand you have been attending church on a regular
basis.
May I suggest you cease and desist and
instead take a walk in the park. You
will find the fresh air and ambience much more helpful than some outdated
message from an old book called the Bible.
And what is this 10 Commandments I hear
you spouting about from time to time.
Haven't you learned that moral judgments based on some mountain
delivered manuscript are no longer in vogue?
If it feels good it is alright?
Didn't you know that?"
And suppose I continued on in that
vein? Would you think this old preacher
had lost his mind?
But then this purposeless purpose is held
by a host of folk and it does make a difference and Sodom and Gomorrah comes to
mind.
And I believe those cities were
destroyed.
Think about it. Is one
who steals wearing arey flanneled suit any better because of his clothing than
a punk in cutoffs.
And is the effect any different. Does not hope and trust die under the
influence of both these deeds.
And immorality of any
cloak or kind...does it not create a moral climate change that cannot by the
wildest stretch of magination be
approved?
And your children or grandchildren...what
are they seeing...is it good and of God...then blessings to your days.
In the 23rd Psalm are
the words, "He restoreth my soul" which is a promise to any wandering
prodigal to kneel down and pray up.
AND
HAVE THE SOUL REPAIRED.
REPENT
AND BE REDEEMED.
"He leadeth me in the paths of
righteous for His names sake."
Life? Life is about movement in
the right direction or the wrong direction.
St Francis of Assisi, founder of
the Franciscan Order until he was 30 years of age would
not admit to the presence of his soul.
He
was a professor of Elocution by day and a playboy by night.
Then
one day beneath a cloudless he heard a voice say"Tole lege. Tole lege" which translated means
"Take and read. Take and
read."
So taking the book his mother had given
him many years before he read in the Epistle of Paul, " "Let us behave decently, as in the
daytime, not in orgies and drunkenness, not in sexual immorality and
debauchery, not in dissension and jealousy."
And he gathered these holy truth to himself and who
he was became something else...something else indeed.
It is is
highly doubtful you or I will ever have the word Saint placed before our
name...but do we really want to wear heavily the sinners tag.
Is there not a
best and better way of living to which we all are called.?
There is a
journey America would be prospered by.
More folk journeying back to a working relationship with God.
The 10
Commandments condemned enough so that it is against (by order of the Supreme
Court) to display then in public places.
And our
children get the message and some ignore but others, now grown to adulthood,
have embraced it.
I walked some mean
streets in New York one time and oh how much more comfortable I would have felt
if from time to time I heard a Bible quote or seen a Bible in hand...for yes
where folk ask for guidance they find it.
Nothing bad happened but that is not the point I
have just tried to make.
In one of his inaugural addresses he said, "No people can be bound to
acknowledge and adore the invisible hand which conducts the affairs of men more
than the people of the United States. Every step by which they have advanced to
the character of an independent nation seems to have been distinguished by some
token of providential agency." In plain English he said, it is God Who got
us this far, and we had better not forget it!

Was Lincoln,
before he died, overly proud that he had so much to do with the preserving of
the Union?
It
is more likely that he quoted once again words of one of his favorite poets,
William Knox, “Oh, why should the spirit of mortal be proud?”
As he walked the streets of Richmond, Virginia
in an unannounced visit after that city had fallen to the North, it was said
that he was the man of the people among the people.
When
